TONIGHT: A “major announcement” is in store, according to Dave Meltzer. Also, WWE.com says the show will start out with a Triple H- Randy Orton confrontation. Plus, in a tag match, John Cena & Jeff Hardy face JBL & Umaga. Also, final One Night Stand hype and perhaps a training video of Cousin Sal, as he prepares to face Santino Marella

-WWE Open.

-Memorial Day tribute video, dedicated to the men and women of the armed forces.

-It’s the Pepsi Arena in Denver, Colorado (wasn’t the Pepsi Arena in Albany?) hosting tonight’s Raw. Chairman McMahon was on the video-tron. He said Regal got what he deserved last week. He said the fans deserve even more than WWE presents. McMahon said they deserve….appreciation. Feels like it’s been done before. He had an idea for appreciation tonight and would show the fans appreciation….even if it meant him having to do something never seen before on TV.

-Todd Grisham was in the ring to emcee the face-off between Triple H and Randy Orton. HHH came out first, followed by Orton. There are podiums and red carpet in the ring, so you know it’s a big deal. Grisham posed the first question to Orton, about why he thinks he can beat Trips this Sunday. Orton was upset that everyone downplays his accomplishments. HHH said people laugh at him because he’s an ass, not because they don’t respect him. Trips chided Orton for his effort in the past. HHH called him “a scared little boy in a man’s world.” Orton said Triple H doesn’t thrive on competition, something Triple H accused Orton of himself. Orton brought up HBK and Evolution as examples of people HHH kept close because he knows they can beat him. It takes longer to answer one question here than in the presidential debates. Orton said he’d beat Trips Sunday until he’s the last man standing. Orton turned to leave, but HHH wasn’t giving him the last word. Trips said if Orton doesn’t win, the last seven months will have been for nothing. Triple H walked out, forgetting his title, so Grish had to get it for him. Good, albeit drawn out, segment.

-Tonight, Cena & Hardy vs. JBL & Umaga.

[Break]

-Beth Phoenix joined the commentators for the first match.

(1) Jillian Hall vs. Melina
Jillian sang Vince’s theme song, her opinion of Melina’s chances in her match at Judgment Day. Jillian attacked off the bat, then did a handspring elbow. Hair pull followed. She then choked Melina in the ropes. Melina came back with a dropkick and the fans had no trouble getting behind her. Leg grapevine, she bridged to grab the jaw for the submission victory.

Winner: Melina, at 2:03. Ugly.

-Chris Jericho and Vince were backstage. Jericho’s idea for fan appreciation night: A re-match between him and HBK. Vince granted it. Jericho suggested Vince update his theme song, perhaps to a heavy metal or scat version (both of which he performed). Before Vince could answer, Cryme Tyme came in and sang a song about (what else?) money, then made off with some things Regal had left behind in his office.

[Break]

-During the break, CT sold off some of Regal’s stuff to the crowd while Ron Simmons said “damn!”

(2) Paul London & Brian Kendrick vs. Hardcore Holly & Cody Rhodes- World Tag Team Title Match
High dropkick from Rhodes on London. Tag to Kendrick, double dropkick. Rhodes sent Kendrick hard into the buckle, then took turns with Holly in working him over. Cody missed a cross-body and both men made tags. London showed a ton of fire. Holly got him up for the Alabama Slam, but Kendrick reversed things and London almost got the roll-up win. After taking out Cody, London skinned the cat back in, but right into a waiting Holly’s arms, Alabama Slam, champs retain.

Winners: Holly & Rhdoes, at 3:33.

Immediately after the match, Ted Dibiase’s music hit and he came out. He introduced the newest member of the Raw roster….his son, Ted Dibiase. The younger Dibiase said he was coming for the tag titles and that everybody’s got a price….but he’s priceless.

-The main event tag match was plugged.

[Break]

-Jerry Lawler said next week on Smackdown, Cousin Sal would face Santino Marella.

-They then went to training footage from the Hollywood Gym with Sal & Piper. Piper slapped Sal, but Sal didn’t get the message and tried to leave. Jimmy Kimmel walked in and suggested Piper give Sal a forearm smash. Kimmel was at ringside calling out non-existent moves while Roddy punished Sal. Jimmy said the family was counting on Sal. Sal said he was going to take a nap, so Piper put him in the sleeper. Kimmel then drew on Sal’s face with a marker. Eh. Not high comedy by any means.

-Mickie James was giving her ideas to Vince McMahon, including having fans from schools send in tapes on why they love WWE, with the winning school getting a diva for the day. JBL walked in and called what Mickie suggested an escort service. Well, Ashley just got zinged. JBL said we should sell ringside collectibles, like the mats that will be soaked in Cena’s blood at Judgment Day. He then made some rude sexual comments toward Mickie relating to her and Cena.

-The big tag match is next.

[Break]

(3) Jeff Hardy & John Cena vs. Umaga & JBL
I’d prefer Hardy to be selling last week’s injuries a bit more. Cena and JBL almost started, but JBL tagged out. Instead, Umaga got the best of Cena when the two collided. Cena fired back, but Umaga laid him out with a swinging rock bottom for two. And a break with both men in the ring?

[Break]

Cena and Umaga were both down, but Cena got up to make the tag. Jeff went to springboard into the ring, but Umaga pushed him to the floor. JBL came in and used some well-placed knees to the gut of Hardy. Abdominal stretch by JBL. Whisper in the Wind got JBL down and Cena came in to hit his usual offense. Umaga interrupted the five-knuckle shuffle. Hardy tagged in as they fought to the outside. He missed the Swanton and JBL capitalized with the Clothesline from Hell for the win.

Winners: JBL & Umaga, at 9:30. Decent tag match.

-HBK was backstage in Vince’s office. He said he couldn’t imagine Vince doing something decent for the fans. Vince said at the end of the night, even HBK will have to give the devil his due.

[Break]

-Some of the Denver Broncos were shown in the crowd.

-Highlights of the recent Raw brand tour of Mexico were shown.

(4) Mr. Kennedy vs. Carlito
Kennedy bragged about getting Regal fired last week. Carlito missed a springboard back-elbow, but fought off a Mic Check to land a neck-breaker. Clothesline put Carlito down, but not fore three. Carlito powerslammed Kennedy, but KK backed out of a back-stabber and won with the Mic Check.

Winner: Mr. Kennedy, at 2:44.

Katie Lea came out post-match to defend Regal to Kennedy. As she dissed Kennedy, Paul Burchill came from behind and attacked KK. Burchill said there’d be serious repercussions for Kennedy ending Regal’s reign. Burchill ended things with a curb stomp.

-Later, HBK faces Y2J.

-Also, Vince’s “Epic Announcement.”

[Break]

-In Vince’s office, Trevor Murdoch was singing a few bars from the country version of “No Chance in Hell.” Vince changed the subject and said for Trevor to get every wrestler, referee and etcetera to come to the ring after the next match for his epic announcement. Trevor said he’d tell everyone….except Cade.

-Ross and Lawler discussed the One Night Stand card. Then we got a video package of the Triple H vs. Orton feud.

-Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho is next.

[Break]

-More messages from the troops aired.

(5) Chris Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels
This is a non-title match. Exchanges and counters was the name of the game to begin. Hard back elbow caught HBK coming off the ropes. Y2J missed a springboard onto HBK on the apron, and Jericho ended up on the outside for a more traditional mid-match break.

[Break]

HBK fought out of a side head-lock, but was stung by an enziguiri. Jericho became aggressive in the corner, to the point of almost getting DQ’d for not breaking. After Jericho got crotched on the middle rope, he quickly recovered to work HBK over again. Lionsault missed and HBK followed suit, missing an elbow from the top. HBK held the ropes on a Code Breaker try but Y2J also avoided the superkick. Walls of Jericho were locked in, but Shawn got the ropes. Y2J continued his assault with HBK in the ropes, and in a nice touch, flinched when he went back to work on Michaels, fearing the superkick out of nowhere. Jericho shot HBK to the outside, where he applied the Walls until both men were counted out.

Winner: Double Count-Out, at 10:00. Good match.

Jericho again locked in the Walls after the match, then grabbed a chair. He couldn’t bring himself to hit Michaels and instead, offered HBK a hand to help him up. HBK accepted and Jericho threw the chair down and walked away once Michaels was on his feet.

-Vince was backstage, heading to the ring for his big….thing.

[Break]

-The Raw roster was on the stage as Vince strutted to the ring. Vince said we deserve new superstars, divas and feud. He said there’d be a draft lottery in four weeks with the superstars of Smackdown and ECW appearing on Raw. He teased fans, saying “it’s all about the money,” and asked what if he gave away $1,000, $10,000 or $100,000 to fans each week. He then said he was going to give away $1 Million on Raw (not all in one week, by the sounds of it). That was it. What just happened? I understand ratings are down, but they've finally gotten to the point of trying to PAY people to watch.

- So does Virgil have a son who is going to team up with Dibiase Jr? Or is he going to 'buy' a thug like Mark Henry? He did an alright job on the mic for his first time out. I'm amazed at how over Holly and Rhodes have gotten.

- It will be interesting to see what Kennedy can do with Burchill. This is the first time that I can recall where he has to carry the feud as the bigger name. Burchill probably has enough skill to carry the work in the ring, but will anybody care?

- Giving away money reminds me of when the gave away that house to start the In Your House PPVs when business was way down. It will be interesting to see if Vince "Working out the details" for a week will spike the ratings enough for more people to tune in. Probably not. Another draft? I thought we were past that when guys just switch brands at random.

The only thing I have to add is that I had to mute the show for a phone call during the Kennedy/Burchill bit; according to the transcript, there will be "serious report cushions" for Kennedy.

So, DiBiase's son is a Second Generation Wrestler according to Good Ol' JR? Considering one of the things that always got pushed when Ted DiBiase was a face was his father dying in the ring, I'd think maybe he is a 3rd generation wrestler. As for his partner, I say he buys Holly, as they were teasing Holly and Rhodes having nothing in common.
Wasn't giving away a million dollars one of the things that Nitro was going to do right before Vince bought WCW? What's next, a Team Challenge Series?

Or, umm, buying Rhodes. I honestly can't remember -- was his diatribe directed more towards Rhodes or Holly, or just the team overall?

Seemed just like the team to me, he didn't even really specifically talk about buying anyone- he just used his dad's catchphrase as part of his catchphrase. That being said, there have been "news" reports indicating they want to do a stable of 2nd/3rd generation wrestlers, so if he buys anyone I'm saying it's Cody.

Wrestlecrap actually wrote an entry for that fiasco and I'm betting we see it again before the big night.

This was a good show, but that was an abrupt ending. Everything went very well starting with the opening promo. I sincerely hope this Sunday marks the end of Randy Orton's main event run once and for all, but I've been saying that for the last two PPV's, so who knows.

I'm guessing Paul Burchill turns into a nice distraction for Kennedy for the next 60 days until Regal comes back. Either way, it looks like Kennedy will be seeing Brits for the foreseeable future. And with Santino feuding with Piper and Cousin Sal, it's nice to see that Carlito has settled nicely back into his old position in Wrestling Limbo.

I liked Ted DiBiase Jr.'s first WWE promo, but that catchphrase has got to go. And seriously, if he wants to ride his old man's coattails, he'll need much snazzier threads. I think he could pull off a suit pretty well. And if I have to speculate on his partner, I'm guessing Mike Rotunda comes out of retirement for a few weeks and we get Money Inc. 2000 for a while.

I didn't think it was possible to blow a lariat spot, but Bradshaw proved me wrong. Good lord, all he has to do is wait for Jeff to STAND UP, and instead he jumps the gun. And yet there's the potential next #1 contender. Oy!

Agreed. It was a real letdown when Dibiase introduced his son, and out stepped The Most Generic Wrestler Ever. At least his promo was decent. If Dibiase Jr. will team with Cody, that might explain Lawler's weird commentary about how Rhodes is such an egomaniac.

Mickie's great idea to improve Raw was to throw a 1997-era Nitro party.

“How is it that I am a good actor? What I do is I... pretend to be the person I’m portraying. You’re confused. Case in point: in Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson comes to me and says ‘I would like you to be Gandalf the Wizard,’ and I said ‘You are aware that I am not really a wizard?’ and Peter Jackson said ‘I would like you to use your acting skills to portray a wizard for the duration of the show.’ So I said ‘Okay’ and then I said to myself ‘Mmm.. How do I do that?’ And this is what I did: I imagined that I was a wizard, and then I pretended, and acted, in that way on the stage. How did I know what to say? The words were written down for me in a script. How did I know where to stand? People told me where to stand." -- Sir Ian McKellen, Extras

Wow....Trevor Murdoch responds to being punked out by Lance Cade...by saying he won't tell him about the entire announcement. Dude, that's extreme!

No talk of the open GM position...after last week, seeing Teddy on Raw. I guess he'll say his final goodbyes on Smackdown first.

I look forward to seeing Kennedy/Burchill. I like Burchill.

Is the idea of Ted DiBiase's team kinda like New Blood 2008?
I call shenanigans on Vince giving a million to some fans. I bet it's a work.

I'm excited about the next draft pick...but I'd love a certain level of interactivity. I wonder if the 'E would set it up so that the fans can make some picks...that'd be sweet.

Highlight of the night was the end of Jericho/Michaels. The sheer look in Jericho's eyes when he was about to nail Michaels with the chair was brilliant. I look forward to seeing this storyline progress.

Only thing I didn't like about that match was how HBK made the "Walls of Jericho" look weak.

Jericho puts it on him in the ring for a good bit before HBK eventually makes it to the ropes for a ropebreak without tapping......and I have no problem with that. But then Jericho quickly puts HBK in the Walls of Jericho again outside of the ring for longer than a ten count and HBK still never taps.

One minor quibble -- with the "never before done on television" part. Uhhh, doesn't Deal or No Deal give away money to home viewers on every show? I know Wheel of Fortune does periodically as well. So it's not like this is unprecedented.

So how is giving away a million dollars going to improve ratings? Raw attendance I can see, but why would that draw new viewers? They can't win the money.

However, I do like the new faces and pushes we are seeing in Ted Jr. and Burchill. Many might see it as a step backwards for KK, but it's not his fault that his big feud was ruined by a drug test and had to be blown off early. Maybe he can elevate Burchill? Hopefully, because I always liked the guy, and the Curb Stomp is nasty.

If I had to guess on Ted's partner, I would say DK Smith. His dad always played second banana, so he can carry on that tradition.

Could anyone possibly care about a million dollar contest? Is there anyone in the world who will tune in specifically because of this?

Odds that I will win the money: 1 in 5,000,000 or so, assuming every Raw viewer gets an equal shot

Odds that I will win the money assuming they restrict participation to Americans only: no chance in hell skooba da deba doo ba da boo ba DOY

Odds that I will have my time wasted by this contest which really does not stand to benefit me personally in any way: 1 in 1
