TONIGHT: Raw is in London, England on no doubt another profitable overseas tour. William Regal has the home-field advantage in his scheduled match with Randy Orton tonight. Also, a title is on the line as Mickie James challenges Beth Phoenix for the womens title, about three months too late. The revitalization of the tag division continues, as we get a number one contenders match, pitting London & Kendrick (JRs Superstars of the Week!) against Santino & Carlito. Heeeeere we go.....

-WWE Open.

-William Regal was sipping some pre-match tea (Im assuming) in his office when John Bradshaw Layfield walked in. He had some not-so-kind words for England AND Regal, for putting Cena and Triple H in his title match at Backlash. JBL wanted a plane out of England. Instead, Regal put him in a one-on-one match with Triple Haitch.

-RAW Open.

-Over 17,000 in London, England for Monday Night Raw tonight. Leading things off was Mr. WrestleMania, Shawn Michaels. JR said everyone is talking about Batista vs. Shawn Michaels at Backlash. Michaels said he didnt want to have to come out and address the Batista situation again, but he has to. Lots of boos for Batista. He said everyone was able to accept Flairs retirement but Batista. HBK said on Smackdown we got to what was really bugging Batista.....him, Michaels himself. Michaels said in 1998, doctors said hed never wrestle again, but he continues to do it today. He said hes tired of apologizing for his past. HBK said hed kick Batistas teeth in at Backlash. Ric Flairs music hit, but no one came out. There is a royal-looking chair and stage on the Raw entrance, giving credence to the rumor that King of The Ring will be next week on Raw. Instead, Chris Jericho came out. He said wed never hear that music again because of Michaels. He then called Michaels a phony. He then said Michaels loves himself and enjoyed retiring Ric Flair. And I thought Jericho sided with HBK in the Highlight Reel last week. He said Batista is irrational when complaining about Flair being gone, but hes rational when talking about his dis-like for Michaels. Y2J went so far as to say that it may have even been Michaels who suggested the retirement stipulation to Vince. HBK got tired of hearing this and superkicked Jericho. Good segment that wove together a few different angles.

[Break]

-JR plugged the King of The Ring, which will take place during next weeks three-hour Raw.

(1) Santino Marella & Carlito vs. Paul London & Brian Kendrick- #1 Contenders Match
Some stalling to start, then a side-headlock from London. A couple heel trips by London on Santino, so Carlito tagged himself in. He wasnt any more successful. Kendrick got caught in the corner and slammed down by Carlito. Quick tags by the heels, as they isolated Kendrick in their corner. Kendrick finally made the tag to London. Inverted atomic drop and hurricanrana on Carlito. Spinning heel kick caught Carlito coming off the top rope. Santino interrupted the three count and he and Kendrick ended up outside the ring. Back in, a Backstabber on London got the pinfall victory for the new number one contenders.

Winners: Carlito & Marella, at 4:00. Okay match, but the crowd didnt seem to be behind either team really, thought they were cheering for Kendrick to get out of a rest-hold. No pop for the hot tag.

Santino got the mic and spoke what Im assuming was Italian. He called Rhodes Softcore Cody Rhodes. Marella said you need to be international superstars to be champions.

-JBL and Triple H face off against each other tonight. Also, The Glamazon faces Mickie James for the Womens Title, and its NEXT.

[Break]

-JR and King plugged the new WWE Kids Magazine.

(2) Mickie James vs. Beth Phoenix- WWE Womens Title Match
Lillian Garcia did ring introductions when both were in the ring. Gave the womens contest a rare big-match feel. Beth picked Mickie up in a chokehold and threw her in the corner. Mickie tried a roll-up but Beth didnt go down. Beth rammed Mickie back-first into the corner. A weak cover still got two. Slingshot suplex by Beth. Double-arm chicken-wing by Phoenix, as she seemed to have a counter for every one of Mickies moves. Mickie sent Beth hard into the turnbuckle, hitting her throat and head. Head-scissors by Mickie, but Beth backed her into the corner on a DDT attempt. Top rope Thesz Press from the top (which JR called a bulldog) for two. Beth came back quickly and locked Mickie in another double-arm chicken-wing, but Mickie victory rolled out of it.....for the win?

Winner and NEW champion: Mickie, at 5:15. So much for being in the doghouse. I actually dont mind this too much, though I did like Beth as champion. Well see where it goes from here. Match was decent and the crowd did finally get into it toward the end. If they wanted Beth to keep the title, I wouldve gone for Mickie getting DQed to set something up in the future.

-Randy vs. Regal is still to come.

[Break]

-Mickie was still celebrating, joined by Ashley and Maria on the stage. Hugs all around. Todd Grisham came out to get an interview and Mickie did a lot of yelling and crying. She even kissed Grisham! Cooties! Anyway, what alternate universe is this that the Womens Division is getting so much attentino?

-JR talked about the fatal four-way match at Backlash. Mike Adamle was backstage with William Regal. He asked Regal why he decided to take on the best in the world in Randy Orton. Jericho then came on and said he wants a triple-threat match at Backlash with him, Batista and HBK. Regal made him the special referee instead. Jericho said he wanted to wrestle, not ref, so Regal put him in the ring with Umaga tonight. Oh, and hell be defending the I.C. Title.

[Break]

-We got a sneak peek at Mick Foleys new movie, Animorphs, also starring Willem Dafoe.

(3) JTG vs. Trevor Murdoch
Cryme Tyme did some mic work before the match. We even got a clip of Lance Cade trying to motivate Murdoch backstage before the match. Dropkick by JTG, but Murdoch got a boot to the face. After a chinlock, Murdoch hit an impressive cross-body from the top, but JTG rolled him over and got the win.

Winner: JTG, at 1:22. Cade looked disappointed, yet understanding in the ring toward Murdoch, but left on his own.

-Randy Orton and his evil eyes were walking backstage. His match against the GM is next.

[Break]

(4) Randy Orton vs. William Regal
Orton did some pre-match talking. He said hes beaten everyone there is to beat, and as a bonus, he gets to beat the Raw GM in his own country. He also mentioned the Age of Orton again. Good pop, as expected, from Regal. Lets go Regal chant right off the bat. Long lock-up led to Regal getting a cheap-shot in the corner. Overhand wrist-lock by Orton, but Regal bridged and got a back-heel trip for the near fall. Body-scissors by Regal. I think the crowd was doing a soccer chant, but Im not sure. Back-breaker by Orton. Things broke down into a brawl and Orton hit some hard right hands, then did some choking. Suplex by Regal that looked a bit dangerous as he dropped Orton on his head. Regular suplex by Regal that brought Orton back in the ring after the champ took a powder. Running knee-lift by Regal. Out of nowhere, Orton landed the RKO for the win.

Winner: Orton, at 5:48. If theyre serious about re-building the tag division, bring back Regal and Taylor.

-Triple H vs. JBL is tonight; the first one-on-one matchup between the two (allegedly).

-Backstage, Umaga cut a promo to the camera, presumably for his match against Jericho.

[Break]

(5) Umaga vs. Chris Jericho- Intercontinental Title Match

Again, special ring introductions by Garcia. Jericho tried to brawl toe-to-toe with Umaga, and it went about as well as youd expect. Jericho attempted a sunset flip and Umaga missed a sit-down splash. Seated dropkick by Jericho. That offensive outburst didnt last long, as the Samoan Bulldozer softened Jericho up with headbutts and punches. Clothesline by Umaga on Jericho and a big splash got a two-count. Umaga lifted Jericho over his head and threw him to the outside. Match continues on the other side of the break.

[Break]

Jericho still couldnt get any sustained offense going against Umaga. Then the nerve hold was applied. Some Y2J chants were heard as Jericho was fighting out of it. He then low-bridged Umaga on a charge and hit a baseball slide. Umaga, though, came back quickly with a clothesline. Some more punishment meted out for Jericho. Y2J got his knees up on a butt-drop attempt but lost his balance on a bodyslam try and Umaga landed on him for two. After more slow beating, Umaga brought Jericho into the corner and pounded away at him. He missed the running butt splash and Jericho hit a flying arm strike to the back of Umagas head off the top. Jericho tried a face-buster to no avail. Umaga missed a headbutt and Jericho tried the Walls of Jericho. That didnt work and Umaga hit a Samoan drop for a very near-fall. Jericho ducked a Samoan spike and Umaga missed a corner splash, hitting his head on the post. Jericho rolled up Umaga, used the ropes, and retained the IC belt.

Winner: Jericho, at 14:58. Really slow at times, but pretty decent at other times.

[Break]

(6) Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs. Paul Burchill
Burchill was accompanied by his sister, Katie Lea. Burchill blind-sided Duggan at the outset. He never fully recovered from that and Burchill won with his Curb Stomp.

Winner: Burchill, at 1:08. I notice theyre putting Burchill and Lea on as late as possible, aside from the main event.

[Break]

-Todd Grisham plugged Triple Hs DVD, then interviewed him. He asked for HHHs game plan, and Triple H made fun of him, saying it would be stupid for him to reveal his plan beforehand. Triple H threatened JBL and told him it was time to play The Game.

-JR and King previewed the Backlash card.

-Both Triple H and JBL made their entrances. They took a break during JBLs.

[Break]

(7) Triple H vs. John Bradshaw Layfield
Match was joined in progress. They heavily hyped this being a first-time-ever match. The two went toe-to-toe after a collar-and-elbow tie-up. Another ref-induced break in the corner. Trips hit some right hands and sent JBL face-first into the corner pad. Neckbreaker by HHH only got one. JBL punched his way out of an arm-wringer. He then back-dropped out of a Pedigree attempt. JBL had to be backed out of the corner by referee Mike Chioda for not heeding his warnings. Full-nelson by Bradshaw. The Game broke out of it and then hit a high knee. Trips clotheslined JBL to the outside. They both brawled in the aisle on the outside. Before they could get back in, Randy Orton came down and attacked Triple H. He took Trips into the ring, but HHH came back with a spinebuster. He was about to attempt the Pedigree when JBL hit a running boot on him. It was a two-on-one beat-down. JBL set The Game up for the punt by Orton. Orton got a running start, but JBL surprised him with a clothesline. Clothesline From Hell to Triple H. He held the title high over his head. At least he got some of his heat back from last week.

Winner: Triple H, by DQ, 5:59.

- Jericho is going heel and it's about time. He has a better chance at saving us that way.

- I've finally decided that I can see Santino and Carlito actually being a legit team. If they can keep somewhat of an edge and not fall into comedy fodder it will be a big boost for the division.

- Scary looking suplex by Regal, and one of the best knee lifts I've seen in a long time. He blew the RKO though.

- Umaga vs Jericho was top notch. It's time to put Umaga in some kind of feud other than guy that you have to face when you are in trouble with Regal. Granted Jericho eats offense almost better than anyone on the roster, but for a match that was 95% controlled by Umaga, it never slowed to a point where you started to wonder what else was going on.

- That was a great clothesline from JBL to Orton. It's that kind of dickhead heelness that makes me love wrestling.

A really good Raw that also didn't feel like an overseas throwaway, which is nice since the crowds across the pond are always fun.

(1) Santino Marella & Carlito vs. Paul London & Brian Kendrick- #1 Contenders Match

Is Carlito the only Caribbean wrestler without a head harder than steel?? I still think the tag team division is mid-card level, certainly nothing like the mid to late 80s. I thought it was funny that Carlito thought Marella said "weiner" instead of "winner".

(2) Mickie James vs. Beth Phoenix- WWE Womens Title Match

Is it me or did I see some butt crack from Phoenix? That outfit she now has is hot as all get out. Still, it was time for her to drop the belt but I was hoping it would be a screwjob loss where she kicks the crap out of the ref. Good match though although Phoenix does all the power moves.

(3) JTG vs. Trevor Murdoch

Maybe this will begin the push of Cade as a singles wrestler. No one wants to see Murdoch vs Cade feud. Still don't know where they are going with Cryme Time yet.

(4) Randy Orton vs. William Regal

No surprise that Orton would win.

(5) Umaga vs. Chris Jericho- Intercontinental Title Match

Great match like I thought it would be, best of the night. Didn't think Umaga would get the belt.

(6) Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs. Paul Burchill

The audience would have gone nuts had Duggan won the match? Duggan can still work a crowd at times. Burchill & the sister gimmick is so not over, send him to ECW.

(7) Triple H vs. John Bradshaw Layfield

Not bad, no one expected a clean win in this one.

-----------

Where's the Big Show tonight???? I guess on Smackdown.

Glad Batista didn't get microphone time tonight, we didn't need "another" confrontation.

Regal is becoming more of a face "general manager" than a heel.

Yea, did I mention that Beth Phoenix looked really hot tonight?

Piss in a man's tea and make an enemy for life. I wish he could've sent Tajiri after the icee belt in a true throwback. On the match itself, I really wasn't feeling it. It was like eighty-three minutes long, and I have no idea when Ewe-Mainga suddenly picked up the concept of isolating an injured spot. Also, I had no idea he understood that to win the belt he had to beat a countout. On the flip side, bodyslam? Really Chris? You've been kicked in the teeth, not the brain.

Also, yay for irony listening to Jim Ross concerned about the status of Orton after his head injuries.

Did Jerry Lawler actually bust out a Juno reference? I thought I heard him refer to Mickie James as the macaroni to his cheese. And JR made a Stuart Smalley joke? Zany.

How is it that I am a good actor? What I do is I... pretend to be the person Im portraying. Youre confused. Case in point: in Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson comes to me and says I would like you to be Gandalf the Wizard, and I said You are aware that I am not really a wizard? and Peter Jackson said I would like you to use your acting skills to portray a wizard for the duration of the show. So I said Okay and then I said to myself Mmm.. How do I do that? And this is what I did: I imagined that I was a wizard, and then I pretended, and acted, in that way on the stage. How did I know what to say? The words were written down for me in a script. How did I know where to stand? People told me where to stand." -- Sir Ian McKellen, Extras

Doesn't counterbalance that super timely "Winona Ryder is a shoplifter" reference Lawler threw out during Cryme Tyme's entrance.

Well, there was that rumor that she was back up to it. Maybe Lawler's material is just a couple months behind.

I enjoyed RAW a lot tonight. I hope that there is a chance tonight's show is a sign of re-establishing the tag team divisions, but won't get my hopes up that high. Jericho/Umaga had a great match, and it feels like a waste they aren't doing something with this now heel Jericho against CM Punk for the IC title at Backlash.

Even at about 5 minutes, Orton/Regal was a lot of fun. It seems as of late, booking has gone really well with Orton. This is the way Orton should be booked as a top heel and champion. They've done a good job of making Orton a sneaky guy that can figure out ways to beat you cleanly instead of the crap with blatantly low-blowing his opponents to retain his title (lame). Hopefully Orton will go over at Backlash in similar champion. It would be a shame to end his title run right now after its totally been reinvigorated.

Mickie/Beth Phoenix was good too. Wouldn't mind seeing a rematch at Backlash.

Fingers crossed that Colt Cabana will play Hillary Clinton next week. Otherwise that BS is dead to me.

Maybe it was a reference to the 1994 Beastie Boys song "Get It Together," which I think is what the Juno line was referencing (or neither). Plus if Lawler actually said Mickie James was the "macaroni," that implies that she has a penis.

I don't get why Jericho was added to the HBK/Big Dave match!

Great womens' title match. It's nice to see Mickie James back, and champion, no less. This match should have been at Wrestlemania, instead of the abysmal Bunnymania match.

I caught a good part of Raw, but I missed the end; what kind of reaction did Burchill and Lea get?

I'm okay with Chris Jericho being added to the HBK/Batista match.

I'm sure this is a minor point, but Cryme Time should have been told that the UK doesn't trade in Euros...they still use the Pound.

It was fun to see the mention of Euros draw one of the most negative reactions of the night. Someone needed to give Cryme Tyme a brief history of Britain and her relationship to the European Common Market.

It was mentioned that he was from England, but the crowd didn't seem to care. They had a pretty good reaction for Duggan even though he had the 'merican flag with him.

JR also added a disclaimer for his "Spic N Span" comment in case the young folks only use Ka-Boom.

Regal confused me. If Orton was really hurt after that back suplex (the ref flashed the double-x sign), why did Regal give him two more and the kneelift? He looked pissed out there. So did Kendrick. He was pasting Carltio with forearms. Still, I truly enjoy the DDP push for the RKO. No set-up, no working the crowd. It hits and ends the match. Makes the bout much more interesting.

I liked this show a lot. Mickie/Phoenix and Umaga/Jericho were strong. I greatly prefer the style of introductions delivered after the entrances.

It's no secret that I hold a certain disdain for JBL. Having said that, I love it when one heel suckers in another heel and watching JBL wipe out an unsuspecting Orton was great. As much as another JBL title reign would suck more than a Hoover, it's preferable to the Age of Orton.

No Cena in England? I find that odd, considering he could have gotten an on-air pop not heard since his return.

No, you're not alone. I thought he looked in the best shape I can remember since 2001 at WM 24, which is why I thought for sure he was going to win that night! Oh well. I am glad to see he lost the "Puffy Man" look, as Warrior Warrior would say.
