TONIGHT: Were going to find out what lies ahead for Randy Orton right off the bat tonight, or so sez WWE.com. Plus, Chris Jericho hosts Batista AND Shawn Michaels on tonights Highlight Reel. According to the Torch message board (no site credited), Ken Shamrock and Ron Killings are also backstage. Killings is no surprise, since hes been wrestling dark matches for the last two weeks or so. But its fun to speculate!

-WWE Open.

-Clips of HBK beating Flair last night aired, with somber music.

-RAW Open.

-Live from Albany, New York, we get William Regal to start us off. He introduced Randy Orton. Regal introduced his opponent at Backlash, the most deserving #1 contender in history, John (pause)....Bradshaw Layfield! Once JBL got in the ring, he offered his hand to Orton, but Orton wasnt buying it. As Regal began talking again, Triple Hs music came on and out walked The Game. Trips asked Regal, with all due respect, if he was out of his frickin mind. Trips said even though Orton won the match at WrestleMania, he really didnt BEAT anyone. Hunter then asked the obvious question: How can a guy who has been retired for two years, then upon his comeback his big claim to fame be slapping around a midget, be the #1 contender? He then said he found that funny like everyone else, thus undermining the entire storyline. Regal said Triple H would have to earn his way into the main event by taking on Orton and JBL in a handicap match. If he wins, then itll be a triple-threat match at Backlash.

[Break]

(1) Umaga vs. Val Venis
I guess they need a squash match to get Umaga back over after WM. He attacked Venis at the bell, but Val got a brief spurt of offense that Umaga half-sold. Umaga threw him shoulder-first into the ring post. Nerve-hold applied to the former Intercontinental Champion by Umaga. Val fought out of it, then got Samoan dropped. He set Venis up in the corner and did the running butt splash. A small You-mang-ga chant was heard. Thumb to the throat ended it.

Winner: Umaga, at 3:08. Im actually surprised it went that long.

-Batista and Shawn Michaels will be special guests of Chris Jericho on the Highlight Reel.

[Break]

(2) Jillian Hall & Melina vs. Mickie James & Ashley
Jillian started things out with Ashley, knocking her in the head with a forearm. Ashley came back with a hurricanrana. Melina interfered while the ref was distracted, allowing Jillian to make the tag and for the heels to hit a double-team face-buster. Mickie broke up the subsequent pin attempt. Mickie tagged in and hit a few flying clotheslines, then knocked Hall off the apron. Neck-breaker from Mickie and all four ladies were in the ring. Jumping DDT from Mickie ended it.

Winners: Mickie & Ashley, at 2:12. Pretty bad, especially when Ashley was in there. Luckily that wasnt for long.

-Coming up, well re-live last weeks tribute to The Nature Boy Ric Flair.

[Break]

-Michaels and Batista will be on The Highlight Reel later tonight.

-A look back at the final two days of Ric Flairs career. Still get goosebumps from this.

[Break]

(3) Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch vs. Paul London & Brian Kendrick
It was a pier-four brawl at the sound of the bell, but things soon settled in to London vs. Cade. Elobw from Cade missed and London dropkicked Murdoch while moonsaulting onto Cade. Murdoch tripped up London, leading to the Texans working on offense. Murdoch missed a corner charge, which led to Kendrick getting the tag and going wild on Murdoch. He walked into Cade and they screwed up a spinebuster. Kendrick, though, surprised Murdoch with an inside cradle to pick up the victory.

Winners: London & Kendrick, at 3:15. Yay for the tag division showing life the past two weeks!

-Backstage, JBL approached Randy Orton in his locker room. Orton told JBL to save his speech, saying hed beat Triple H tonight as long as JBL stayed out of his way. The match is next! (Which means Im assuming theyll be a surprise main event).

[Break]

(4) Triple H vs. JBL & Randy Orton- Handicap Match
The Champ and The Game led off the match. Triple H landed some punches in the corner, then clotheslined Orton. Trips fought off both opponents in the heel corner as William Regal looked on from ringside. JBL tagged in and my is his hair looking good tonight. After a corner break, Trips and JBL went face-to-face. JBL finally figuratively blinked and backed off. Tag to Orton and he drove his fists into the face of Triple H. JBL got some cheap shots in with the boot as well. Some more chicanery from the bad guys. Ron Garvin Stomp from Orton. JBL came in and hit several elbowdrops for a near-fall. Triple H fought out of the corner but was powerslammed for his efforts. JR had the gall to think that would do it. Off the ropes, HHH walked into a JBL sleeper. JBL was about to hit his running clothesline, but Orton made the blind tag. Randy went for the RKO, but Trips shoved him into JBL. Pedigree>pin.

Winner: Triple H, at 7:52.

Regal announced it would be a triple-threat for the WWE Championship, when John Cenas music hit. The former champ made his way into the arena. Cena congratulated Triple H, but wasnt fond of Triple H saying Orton beat him at WM, since Cena has beaten The Game numerous times. A masturbation joke or two from Cena met with boos from the crowd. Time to change things, methinks. Cena proposed a fatal four-way at Backlash. Regal said it is his duty to make sure the main event for Backlash is the biggest it can possibly be. Regal offered Cena the same deal as Triple H: A handicap match against JBL....and Triple H. If he wins, its a fatal four-way at Backlash.

-Did Michaels do the right thing at WrestleMania? Text your vote to....ah, whatever.

-Tonight, The Highlight Reel with Batista and Michaels.

[Break]

(5) Hardcore Holly & Cody Rhodes vs. Santino Marella & Carlito
No heat whatsoever for the tag champs. Non-title match here, I believe. Some mat-wrestling by a couple of second-generation sports entertainers. Double hip-toss by the tag champs. Santino ran into a Holly elbow. Holly had Santino up for the Alabama Slam but Carlito interfered when the refs back was turned. He hit the DDT and made the cover but wasnt the legal man. Carlitos offense against Holly wasnt exactly getting the crowd into the match. Full-nelson slam by Holly, shades of Tom Brandi. Hot tag to Cody Rhodes, which got some cheers. Knee-drop to Marella. Santino tried to go to the top, but was denied. Cody got pushed off and Marella landed a headbutt off the top for the victory.

Winners: Marella & Carlito, at 4:51. Nothing particularly wrong with the match, other than it wasnt exciting and the crowd didnt care.

-Later tonight, John Cena vs. JBL and Triple H in a 2-on-1 handicap match.

[Break]

-The fun with Cryme Tyme returns! Its a WrestleMania clearance sale. A shaker of soul from the Soul Man Rocky Johnson. Apparently, it makes you dance when you pour it on someone. Ok, Ive seen enough already. An autographed Maria Playboy was next. Finally, a pair of Kim Kardashians underwear from the Hall-of-Fame. Except, JTG said she wasnt at the HOF. In fact, Shad got it from Mae Youngs dressing room. They did their singing thing to mercifully end the segment.

-Last week, Great Khali confronted Big Show. Then on Smackdown, Big Show returned the favor.

-JBL approached Triple H backstage and talked really fast, trying to convince The Game to listen to him. HHH pretended as if he hadnt heard him, then called him an ass.

[Break]

(6) Maria vs. Beth Phoenix
Phoenix slapped Marias arm, so Maria slapped Beth. Knee to the back by The Glamazon on a hand-stand attempt by Maria. A unique back-breaker from Beth that took forever to get set-up. Inside cradle by Maria for two. So much for selling that moves effects. Knees to the gut, then a head-scissor. Beth rolled through on a cross-body. Inverted DDT by Maria for two though. Fisherman buster by Beth for the win.

Winner: Phoenix, at 2:51. Not good. Beths offense looked weak, and so did Marias.

-The Highlight Reel is next.

[Break]

-Chris Jericho got a full entrance for The Highlight Reel. He said this could be the most emotional HR ever. He then introduced Batista. Then, Jericho brought out Michaels. Jericho revealed the results of the text message poll, with 65% saying he was in the right for what he did at WM. Well I dont think that poll was gimmicked, because Im sure theyd want the fans to say no to play into his feud with Batista. HBK said it was Flair who challenged HIM to the match. Jericho said HBK had cracked ribs from the moonsault that landed him on the announce table. HBK said he was sorry, and Batista interrupted saying, like hell you are! The only thing HBK is sorry for, according to Dave, is that everyone is calling him on his crap. Jericho called Batista on it, asking him if he would do the same thing and Batista said no. HBK said his idolization of Flair goes back further than Batistas friendship with him. HBK said Batista is to blame if anyone, for not trying to talk Flair out of the match. He said Flair didnt ask Batista to be the other man in the ring with him because he knew Batista didnt have the nerve. Michaels said he has blood on his hands and that WM was the hardest night of his career. Batista said he trusted Michaels to do the right thing and hell never make that mistake again. HBK said he was sick of the back-and-forth and told Batista to do something about it. Batista just smiled and said, I already have. Que? Another good, emotional segment from these two.

-The two-on-one match (no not that one, the other one) is next.

[Break]

-William Regal was on the phone with Vickie Guerrero. When he got off (the phone), he said it was official: Michaels vs. Batista at Backlash. He was telling this to Randy Orton, who was also in his office. He wasnt a fan of Regals decisions tonight. Regal said since theyre in England next week, hes going to teach him about respect....by facing Orton himself.

(7) John Cena vs. JBL & Triple H- Handicap Match
Right after the bell rang, Orton walked to ringside. That distracted Cena and allowed JBL to get the advantage. Hard forearm to the back of Cena by JBL after JBL rebuffed a Triple H tag. JBL continued ignoring HHH as he controlled Cena. Cena tried to turn the tide, but ran sternum-first into the buckle. JBL took his brawl to the outside and leveled Cena with a short-arm clothesline. JBL stretched Cena in a long rest-hold. Cena made his comeback and when JBL tried to tag, Trips shied away. Cena eyed Triple H standing on the apron, then introduced the Five Knuckle Shuffle to JBLs noggin. HHH short-armed JBL on a tag again and AGAIN. JBL got picked up for the FU, but got out of it and landed a big boot. After a cheapshot, HHH went toe-to-toe with JBL. As that brawl went to ringside, Orton got hit by JBL. Back in the ring, an angry Orton hit JBL with an RKO. Cena pushed Orton out of the ring and made the pin.

Winner: Cena, at 8:02. Nothing like making the heels like look buffoons not once, but twice on the evening. After no one thought Orton had a chance at WM, youd think theyd build up his cred a little.

Is Val Venis the first wrestler who hasn't won a TV match in at least 5 years to still get a ring entrance with music?
Is this JBL main event push the dullest main event push on RAW since the short lived Patriot push?

I still love Batista vs HBK. It's the closest we've ever had to a true, honest-to-God shades of gray feud. If you need to label someone as the face right now, it's HBK, since Flair holds no hard feelings (and because the text vote says so). But if you want people to support him, someone is gonna have to change his promos, because the Christ-complex is absolutely NOT the way to go.

I'm surprised that Batista's side of things is getting as much credibility as it is. It's as if he's so blinded by those terrible sunglasses that he's trying to sell us on the fact that Shawn should've either ducked the match, stepped off the gas petal, or laid down entirely. All this after a month and a half of every player on the roster all the way down to John Morrison pointing at a stupid sign. The best part of this mess (it wasn't really a mess, it was awesome) was Jericho, the poor man's poor man's Ric Flair, and his shit eating grin the entire segment.

Final thought: Somebody please get Trevor Murdoch a sandwich.

While I'm not totally sold on Batista's portrayal of the pissed off friend, I think it comes down to a good story. Lately the main story telling after Mania has had something to do with Backlash (Which is occurring) and the result of the MITB match (both to much success, albeit injuries).

As a result of the Flair Match, this year we get the added benefit of the story telling build that started prior to Mania. I mean, cmon...Smackdown vs. Raw match at Mania for The Animal? He's better than that, did Batista really have to face the guy that has lost almost every BIG match (PPV or TV) since last years Mania?

I think we are finally coming back to the world in WWE of great story telling and build up for a match. I've never been a big fan of the "they gave it away on T.V." however, I'm beginning to understand that comment as we speak. Even if Michaels carries the (first) match WWE knows this is worth a few PPV's. Additionally, Batista needs less carrying than most freaks his size.

Count me in as sold. The promos are a bit emotional, but I like taking it down to that level. Hell, we could always bring back Mr. Ass' thong as an alternative...Nah, I'll take this feud.

So, is the WWE out of ideas for the title scene or is there that little faith in Orton having a one on one contest in the main event?

Raw was more dull than actually bad.
The HBK vs. Batista feud looks pretty good. Funny that they both kept calling him Dave. I know it's his name but it's always weird when the wrestlers act like other wrestlers are real people.
Will the tag division actually matter? I hope so.
The main event scene did not need JBL in there. Unless he wins (which would shock me) or Orton retains (that would suprise me) he is being brought into the main event so that Cena or HHH can feud with him after the Backlash main event. Now whether he would feud with the winner or loser I am not sure.
A quick question. Does anyone know when the draft is? I am guessing it's after Backlash but I haven't heard anything about it. SD could really use a main eventer who could cut decent promos. Oh well, Jericho it's been fun on Raw.

Well, he's had like six. I presume JBL is just in there to keep Orton/Cena/HHH going while holding off on HHH beating Orton in the one-on-one. This time Orton can beat JBL and then they can stretch it out even longer.

It's a sad thing when it's left to ME to grouse about Lilian Garcia announcing the wrong tag team as the winner in the first tag match. I can't believe you'd all give her a free pass so I can only assume you don't even HEAR her anymore.

I was too busy noticing the commentary team ignoring Cade/Murdoch losing in two consecutive weeks to surprise roll-ups and teasing a break-up. But they were right about Murdoch's tan. He's orange except for his face, which is still pink. I don't get see the appeal of tag matches where people don't use their finishers.

But how can anyone swallow JR's line about last night featuring the first time a champ and the No.1 contender have been forced to team up? That's a staple of Russo booking, and we've seen such teams for years, sometimes winning the belts.

It was a tag-heavy show, and that's fine. I liked how the show maneuvered around one big plotline with a substantial segment to sell Michaels/Batista.

If Maria were a better performer, I'd accuse her of sandbagging Phoenix. Beth was genuinely muscling her around to make the moves work.

Especially since Cena could have been considered the #1 contender a few weeks ago when he and Orton were forced to be a tag team against the entire roster.

Yeah, right. Like they'd ever book those matches. Why don't you just have ECW wrestlers show up on both Raw and Smackdown every week while you're at it? Keep dreaming.

They did just score the Big Show ... who will probably get drafted to Raw since he is about to burst out in the WWE while Smackdown will probably get Carlito to replace him
