TONIGHT: Big Show faces a “professional fighter” (note the phrasing) in a match that’s been hyped on ads. Also, it’s the return of the Highlight Reel hosted by Chris Jericho; tonight’s guest, Jeff Hardy. Ric Flair and Shawn Michaels, opponents at WrestleMania, will team with each other in a tag match tonight. Maria’s Playboy cover is revealed and a confrontation between JBL and Finlay. Add in a likely Hall-of-Fame announcement and it sounds like we’re chock full o’ action tonight!

-WWE Open.

-Triple H has his GAME FACE on....Randy Orton has his mean face on.....and John Cena looks like he’s paralyzed in place. They’re all backstage in the office of William Regal. For the next three weeks, Regal is allowing each of the three combatants in the main event at WrestleMania to take his job for a week in a “Triple-Threat Take-Over.” Regal said Cena will start tonight. Orton immediately chimes in with how stupid an idea this is and wants to make a pact that whoever is in charge won’t put the others in a match, so as to avoid injury. They don’t seem to trust Orton and Cena promises something extremely satisfying. That felt like a TNA segment, throwing a lot out there in the opening minute. I’m not sure if they’re booking just the main event for that week or the whole show.

-Raw Open.

(1) Big Show vs. Brandon “The Thrill” Hill- Mixed Martial Arts Exhibition Contest
Mayweather was shown watching live via satellite from Las Vegas. Hill has his entourage of two men. Mayweather was shown smiling whenever he’s on camera. Hill was billed as the same size as Floyd. Jack Doan is your referee for this one. Hill didn’t look too confident. They didn’t really give the rules for this one. Hill hid in the ropes as the bell rang. More of the same from The Thrill. Doan finally warned that one more time would get him DQ’d. Punches to the body had no effect on Show, so the Big Man picked him up and threw him into the corner. Big boot followed. Pinfall, submission or knockout will end this said Lawler. Chokeslam by Show and a foot on the chest for the three.

Winner: Show at 1:50. So is this the kind of match they’re having at WM?

-Show warned Mayweather to save the money and Floyd told him that he’d break his jaw next time. Mayweather said he was willing to die at WrestleMania. Show wasn’t happy that Floyd kept interrupting, so he threw the jobber out of the ring. Eh, some second-rate blabbering from Show and Mayweather, and the crowd didn’t really come down on either side. The response at WM should be interesting.

-Flair and Michaels were walking backstage, their tag-team contest is next!
[Break]

Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch vs. Shawn Michaels & Ric Flair
Murdoch and Flair to start. Hip-lock take-over from Flair then some standard chops. Both men tagged and a cheap shot from the outside by Murdoch gave Cade the advantage. Swinging neckbreaker by HBK and an enziguiri just grazed Cade. Murdoch ate a boot coming off the top after a tag and Michaels was able to reach Flair. Sleeper by Cade on Flair, but not for long as Flair countered. He locked in the figure-four, and Michaels put Murdoch in his own leg-lock as Cade submitted.

Winners: Flair & Michaels at 3:33.

-On the mic, Michaels needed to get something off his chest. He said he’d been thinking about it all week and doesn’t want the match at WrestleMania. He doesn’t want to go down as the guy that ended the career of Ric Flair. He said this is WrestleMania, and he IS The Heartbreak Kid. If Flair keeps pushing for the match, it’s HIS show that’s going to be stopped.

-Regal was backstage talking on the phone, presumably, to Vince. Cena said he just wanted the two guys to go at each other: Triple H vs. Randy Orton in the main event. Regal hesitated, noting that was too big a match. Cena said he wasn’t giving himself the free pass either, as he’s got unfinished business with Mr. Kennedy. Cena also commandeered Regal’s office, since HE’S in charge.

-Next week, superstars from all brands will gather on RAW as it is WrestleMania Rewind night....all matches that have taken place at a previous WrestleMania. It’s three-hours and Floyd Mayweather will be there too.

[Break]

-Tonight is the return of the Highlight Reel, with special guest Jeff Hardy. Also tonight, Finlay confronts JBL.

(3)Super Crazy vs. Umaga
Regal joined the commentators for this one. Swinging side slam from Umaga. After some brief corner-based offense, the thumb to the throat finished off Super Loco.

Winner: Umaga at :42.

-Still to come, John Cena vs. Mr. Kennedy. And in the main-event, Randy Orton vs. Triple H.

[Break]

-The Highlight Reel (and the obscenely expensive JeriTron 3000) made it’s triumphant return. Jericho outlined the MITB match and brought out the favorite (his words), Jeff Hardy. Ah, it’s the JeriTron 6000 (in Hi-Def!), and he used it to show highlights of the two’s match last week. Jericho interrupted Hardy and said there’s nothing the multi-talented Hardy can do to stop him from winning at WM. Hardy said he’s different than before and this means more to him than it ever has. Jericho said he knows the stakes and from here on out, Hardy is a target, not a friend. He also said anything goes. Hardy said he couldn’t agree more and Swanton’d Jericho. A few boos, mostly cheers though.

-Backstage, Mr. Kennedy was walking, heading to the ring for his match with John Cena.

[Break]

(4) Mr. Kennedy vs. John Cena
JR cleared things up as apparently both of my assumptions were wrong. Cena is actually in charge of only matches involving the three of them who are in the main event at WM. High back-body drop on Kennedy from Cena. Worked into an arm-bar as we head to break.

[Break]

Cena registered a near-fall out of break. Kennedy DDT’d Cena on the apron in a unique maneuver. Neck-breaker by Kennedy for another two-count. Running kick in the corner on the former champ. The announcers chided Cena for taking such a big match when he could’ve sat back and relaxed this week. After some resting, Kennedy set up for another kick. Apparently playing possum, Cena jumped up and clotheslined Kennedy. Top rope legdrop by Cena followed by the STFU.

Winner: Cena at 9:22. Fine finish; Kennedy got in enough offense for credibility sake.

-Maria and Candice Michelle were backstage, as the unveiling of Maria’s cover is next. I’d like for her cover to be unveiled tonight, ifyouknowwhati’msayin’.....

[Break]

-The King is in the ring, with the red carpet and the Playboy logo right in the center of the mat. A giant magazine cover is covered up by red cloth. Lawler called for Maria and Candice to come out. The BunnyMania match at WM is going to be a LumberJill match and the Master of Ceremonies will be none other than Snoop Dogg. Maria said it was an honor and she can’t believe she’s on the cover. Upon the unveiling, it was evident that Santino Marella got to it first- his face was covering Maria’s face; also, her crotch and breasts. Santino came out saying, “I got you!” Marella warned her, but now when everyone tries to picture Maria, they’ll have a “erectile malfunction.” Maria did not want to go with Santino. Even her voice is different now that she’s not ditzy. She said she already posed and wants the whole world to see it. Santino asked if it was her “timing of the month.” Santino tried to order her around, to no avail. Lawler finally wailed him and he rolled out of the ring. Candice unveiled the “other” cover that came down from the center of the arena almost down to the ring. Maria soaked in the cheers as Santino stewed at ringside.

-Finlay and JBL have a confrontation later tonight.

-Also still to come, Triple H faces Randy Orton.

[Break]

-They showed highlights of Carl Edwards winning his second race of the season yesterday...JR noted he sat behind he and Lawler last time they were at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind.

(5) Carlito vs. Cody Rhodes- Money In The Bank Qualifying Match
Quick roll-up got two for Rhodes. Inside cradle got two from Carlito. Rhdoes skinned-the-cat to get back in, but Carlito took him down. Neck-breaker by Carlito for two. Carlito’s back-stabber was countered by Cody holding onto the ropes; jackknife cover got two. Crossbody from Rhodes for two. Roll-up by Carlito as he held the ropes, which the ref forced him to break. Bulldog from Cody for a near-fall. Good action here. Back-Stabber by Carlito finished it.

Winner: Carlito at 3:39. All of the guys so far in the match have been in there before....why not let Cody get the win here and send him to WM? At least it would be something new. Match was fun.

-JR and King will talk to Floyd Mayweather next!

[Break]

-We got highlights from the Show match earlier tonight.

-JR and King asked Floyd some questions. JR asked about the media’s response and Mayweather said he’s here to fight. Lawler asked if he’d ever been hurt and Mayweather said he’s training hard and no matter what he does, he’ll be ready. JR asked if he was intimidated by Big Show and Floyd said no way, it looked like the guy Show fought had been eating pancakes for three weeks. King asked if it was worth $20 million for him to fight at WM and Mayweather said he was the real King and that WWE is now MME: Money Mayweather Entertainment. Not quite the segment WWE was looking for, I’m sure.

-Mike Adamle introduced the video package for the next sports.....entertainment.....superstar into the Hall-of-Fame. It’s Mae Young.

-Finlay was walking backstage, as he’ll be out to confront JBL next.

[Break]

-Finlay came out to a new theme song. Mr. McMahon came out next. Before JBL comes out, he’s got a few questions himself. Vince wants to know if he conspired with his family against him. Yes, said Finlay. Is it true Vince isn’t his father? Finlay replied that Vince wasn’t good enough to be Hornswoggle’s son. Finlay acknowledged that he was proud to be the father. McMahon said at the last minute, JBL couldn’t be here tonight. However, he is here via satellite. It was revealed that JBL was at Hornswoggle’s bedside. JBL said he preys on the innocent- it’s how he made his fortune and it’s fun. JBL said he’d fight Finlay, on his terms: at WrestleMania. JBL told Horny to say hit to Finlay, then shoved him down. JBL said no one will want to see what he’s about to do, so he covered the screen as things went flying and Hornswoggle whimpered. The camera focused on Finlay’s stoic face as they went to break.

[Break]

(6) Randy Orton vs. Triple H
John Cena was on commentary for the bout. He was very smooth, as you’d expect. Long lock-up from the combatants and it was a clean release in the corner. No clean break this time as Triple H was the aggressor. Some chain wrestling by the two, then Trips got tired of it and just landed a right-hand. Short clothesline from HHH for two. Trips held the ropes on an attempted Orton dropkick. To the outside, where Orton did the damage at first, but HHH fed Orton to the steel steps. Back in, an inverted back-breaker by Orton managed to slow down The Game. Kneedrop from Orton for two. After a back elbow by Trips, the two slugged it out. Triple H used the knee for a face-buster, then again with a high knee. Orton wisely rolled to the outside. HHH chased Orton down and hit the spinebuster. Again, Orton took a powder. Orton got the title and tried to walk out, but Cena ran him down and Triple H attacked from behind. Orton fell forward into Cena, knocking him down too. Orton tried to use the belt, but Triple H kicked him in the gut for a Pedigree. Cena interfered, drawing the DQ.

Winner: Triple H by DQ at 7:27.

After the match, Cena FU’d Trips and Orton RKO’d Cena. Orton held the belt high as the show went off the air.

Note: this is actually Carlito's first time in the MITB match. Not that it matters, since he has no chance to win. I'm not sure an eight-man match was such a great idea this year, since presuming that MVP-Hardy and an ECW title match are added to the card, there won't be a lot of viable midcarders left to put in the MITB.

“How is it that I am a good actor? What I do is I... pretend to be the person I’m portraying. You’re confused. Case in point: in Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson comes to me and says ‘I would like you to be Gandalf the Wizard,’ and I said ‘You are aware that I am not really a wizard?’ and Peter Jackson said ‘I would like you to use your acting skills to portray a wizard for the duration of the show.’ So I said ‘Okay’ and then I said to myself ‘Mmm.. How do I do that?’ And this is what I did: I imagined that I was a wizard, and then I pretended, and acted, in that way on the stage. How did I know what to say? The words were written down for me in a script. How did I know where to stand? People told me where to stand." -- Sir Ian McKellen, Extras

JBL saying he feeds on fear was an amazing heel performance, but this Hornswoggle SIDS stuff has to stop. It would be terribly uncomfortable even without the Daniel Benoit undertones.

Big Show vs. Carlito and Chris Masters
Chris Jericho vs. Christian
Kane vs. Kurt Angle
Edge vs. Booker T
Umaga vs. Bobby Lashley

I could watch those clips of Big Show chokeslamming and then tossing Brandon "The Thrill" (was that a shot at our very own W here by that name) Hill out of the ring all day. It was amazing selling from Hill.

Santino after the true Playboy cover came down, talking to the fans: "Cover your eyes!"

Kennedy sure was killing Cena there for a while in their match. It ruled.

Ladies and gentlemen, the following public service message is brought to you by your friends from D-Generation X, who would like to remind each and every one of you that if you're not down with that, we've got two words for you...

I'm still wondering why we're getting Finlay/JBL and not Finlay/Vince. The whole crux of this Hornswoggle thing is the con job Finlay pulled on Vince (with help from Shane & Stephanie, presumably); it's been Vince who's abused Hornswoggle for months with "tough love", and yet I get stuck with the Nazi at Wrestlemania because they seem fit on attaching him into the whole situation with a rivet gun. Honest to god, this is one situation where I'd not only rather see Vince but also where Vince would probably give us the better match.

Oh, well, I guess there's still time to make it a tag match with Vince & Shane thrown in. But still, the whole thing bothers me, especially for something given so much time on RAW over months.

It's looking more and more like we'll get a DQ win for Mayweather (according to the rule of celebrity matches) but we'll end with Show standing tall, since Mayweather is probably going to be the heel in a big way at Wrestlemania.

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

People think Carlito was in a MITB match before because he got the on-screen credit for reviving it the second year, but he ended up losing his qualifying match to Ric Flair.

If Finlay is such a good dad, why didn't he teach Hornswoggle how to talk?

They sure blew it with Mayweather/Show, didn't they? No one buys Mayweather as a face and you can't build up Show as a face for this match, because he's the one who antagonized Mayweather to begin with. This whole thing has just turned into a trainwreck and in two short weeks I've gone from thinking this would get a main event slot at WM to hoping it just stays short.

Hurting the midget (even implying so) is not fun. Finlay/Vince could have been a fun program, but Finlay/JBL is just uncomfortable to watch, especially with the Daniel Benoit parallel that Justin pointed out. It bears repeating that NOBODY was demanding the triumphant in-ring return of JBL and the match at WM will likely be an abomination.

Far be it for me to say "I told you so" but....

I think this Brandon Hill should take Mayweather's place. Man, that kid took some impressive bumps. The visual of Show throwing Hill's lifeless body over the top while Floyd was on the Titantron was amazing. And when they showed him taking the bump to the outside later on.... WOW!

Santino's "timing of the month" was the line of the night ... that man has to have some sort of presence at WM ... why not give him his own talk show segment?

Like last year, I think that it's been announced that the MitB match will feature 8 superstars. Gotta believe that Kane will get added to the match, so there's at least one Smackdown guy.

Add Mike Adamle to the Mayweather angle and the trainwreck will be complete. The XFL may have been a $50 million dollar disaster, but at least it pulled a 10 network rating for 1 night.
Considering Vince was conned in the whole situation and Bradshaw figured out the con job, shouldn't that make them the faces in this situation?
They couldn't let Flair 'Sting' someone one last time before his first retirement? We really are going to need to set up a pool on when Flair's comeback happens after his 1st retirement.

Y'know, I thought it was funny that some of the wrestling sites were listing Morgan as being "sent down" to OVW. Considering that he never left OVW in the first place, that's really reaching with the news there.
