-As usual, a Martin Luther King Jr. video package leads things off.

-WWE Open.

-A video wrap-up of last weeks main event/angle.

-Raw Open, slightly altered.

-Fireworks went off in front of the new set as WWE debuts RAW in HD, LIVE from Hampton, Virginia. Tonight, Vince has ordered an Orton/Hardy handshake. The new set seems to be a hybrid of past PPV sets. The font in the chyron is even a tad different.

(1) Shawn Michaels vs. Ken Kennedy
Kennedy was granted a Rumble spot earlier in the day. KK threw his shirt at HBK, so Michaels wiped his crotch with it. Hip-toss by Kennedy, then an arm-drag. Kennedy tried a leapfrog but HBK, stealing a page from Frank Costanzas book, stopped short. He then got a single-leg take-down. Reverse elbow from Kennedy finds the mark. Kennedy works the neck and called HBK a piece of trash. KK just pulled a chunk of HBKs hair out. Michaels had enough of Kennedys taunting and hit a neck-breaker. Flying forearm from Michaels. Elbowdrop from the top lands, but Kennedy dodged a superkick that seemed a little mis-timed. Michaels jumped onto Kennedy on the outside as we went to break.

[Break]

Michaels did the Flair corner flip, but came back with a clothesline. The Mic Check was blocked by Shawn, but Kennedy backed him into the corner. Michaels battled out of a super-plex but missed an elbow as Kennedy got his knees up. Rolling Samoan drop by Kennedy, only for two. KK dodged another superkick and pushed Michaels down, but HBK kipped up and nailed KK with the superkick for the three-count.

Winner: HBK at 14:19. Eh. Not that great.

-Randy Orton was backstage, holding his neck in pain. He questioned Vinces decision to have him shake Jeffs hand later on. Orton looked pained with every move. He said there was no way he was going to shake Jeffs hand. Vince said hes done the same thing plenty of times. He wanted to help Orton soften his perception and also said it would give him a competitive advantage by getting into Jeffs head.

[Break]

(2) Beth Phoenix vs. Mickie James
JR said Mickie vowed to beat Beth tonight. He also said shes come out on the short end of the stick against Beth lately, which sounds like theyre starting something between the two. Good action early on with good heat. Thesz press and dropkick from Mickie. Beth kneed Mickie right out of the ring, then rammed her back first into the apron. Roll-up by Mickie for two. Hurricanrana for another Mickie near-fall. Beth hung her on the top rope, then cradled her into the Fisherman suplex for the pin.

Winner: Beth at 3:41. Started off good, but got sloppy late, with lots of light shown in between kicks and punches.

-Todd Grisham was backstage with Triple H. He said he doesnt know who his opponent is, then joked about Vince caking on the makeup for the debut in HD. It doesnt matter who his opponent is- he will be in the Rumble this Sunday, and even guaran-damn-tees it.

[Break]

-Catching up on the JBL/Jericho attack from two weeks ago.Jericho returns tonight!

-Brian Kendrick congratulated Cody Rhodes backstage for him and Hardcore Holly qualifying for the Rumble. Kendrick said he has a qualifying match later tonight. Hardcore came into the scene and Cody joked about him dressing as Carlito two weeks ago. Cody said he put a picture of it up on his myspacce. Holly asked what a myspace was. The acting here was on par with a middle school play.

-Randy Orton video package, including championship moments and killing of legends.

-Later tonight, the Hardy/Orton handshake will take place.

-Finlay & Hornswoggle team up for the first time on Raw and its next!

[Break]

(3) Finlay & Hornswoggle vs. The Highlanders
Lawler talked about WWE.com having a list of families that could use Vinces tough love. JR asked if the Hogans were on there. Is he back on their bad list again? Finlay worked on Rory until he got his hands on Hornswoggle. Horny used his teeth on him, then kicked Robbie. Finlay slammed one of the Highlanders and Hornswoggle pinned him after the Tadpole splash.

Winners: Hornswoggle & Finlay at 1:05.

-Chris Jericho is walking backstage, his segment is next.

[Break]

-More clips from the JBL/Jericho beat-down, with voice-over from JBLs interview last week.

-Jericho came out and started off his interview very calmly. He said JBL refused to enter the building tonight when he found out Y2J was there. Jericho said his son asked him if he was really a coward last Monday. Jericho said JBL made a huge mistake when he beat him down two weeks ago- that mistake being that he didnt finish the job. Y2J said it was only going to be one thing this Sunday- a fight. Good, emotional interview.

-JR and King previewed the Rumble card.

-Backstage, Jeff Hardy sat deep in focus. Vince scolded him for his move last week. He said people will be wondering just what Jeff is capable of. Hardy said not to worry, hell be out there tonight.and will make sure to give everyone something to talk about.

[Break]

-Triple H takes on.someone tonight to qualify for the Rumble.

(4) Brian Kendrick vs. Umaga, Rumble Qualifier
William Regal came on the Titan-Tron and said Kendrick will have to beat someone who has already qualified for the Rumble- Umaga. Kendrick ran right into Umaga and went down. Umaga missed a splash and Kendrick used his educated feet. Thrust to the throat from Umaga. Umaga hung Kendrick upside down in the corner, but missed the diving headbutt. Missile dropkick by Kendrick barely staggered the big man. After trying to get Umaga off his feet, Kendrick was caught in the Samoan drop, the throw-and-catch variety. Mid-air Samoan Spike for the win for Umaga.

Winner: Umaga at 2:20. Not bad, actually.

-Mickie James was crying about her match backstage when Maria came to console her. Mickie said no matter what, she just cant beat Beth. Ashley then came onto the scene and Mickie took off. Ashley said she wanted to talk to Maria, as she was at a party at the Playboy Mansion and Heff said..then Santino interrupted. He said no, he doesnt need a subscription to Playboy. I thought theyd have Trevor Murdoch come console Mickie.

[Break]

-This Thursday, Vince McMahon guests on Donald Trumps Celebrity Apprentice on NBC.

-The Games one chance to enter the Rumble is tonight.

-At ringside, Lawler had on a pair of 3D glasses. JR told him theyre in HD, not 3D. They then threw it to a video package on Jeff Hardy, as JR called him the Legend Thriller. Tonight, Vince has ordered a handshake from the two WWE Title opponents.

[Break]

(5) Carlito vs. Hardcore Holly
Shoulderblock by Holly, then a full-nelson slam. Chops in the corner, but Carlito got his feet up on a corner charge. Hard back elbow by Carlito. Suplex by Holly for two. Carlito wanted to springboard in, but Holly was nowhere to be found, so Carlito went back in and continued the offense. Back-body drop by Holly. As he set up the Alabama Slam, Santino jumped up on the apron. Rhodes pulled him down, but it distracted Bob long enough for Carlito to hit the Back-Stabber for the three-count.

Winner: Carlito at 3:11. Not bad.

-Triple Hs match is next.

[Break]

-Flashback to the 2002 Rumble, where Triple H won by eliminating Kurt Angle.

(6) Triple H vs. ?, Rumble Qualifying Match
Regal came out to announce the opponent. He said Trips had to face potentially three opponents in an over-the-top rope gauntlet match. If he throws all three out, hell be in. If he gets tossed by anyone, hes out. The first man was Snitsky. High-knee by Triple H and he attempted throwing Snitsky out. Instead, the big man hit a side slam. He couldnt quite throw Trips out. Snitsky missed a running boot and Triple H clotheslined him out. The second man was Mark Henry. Henry took Triple H down and almost threw him over. Back-breaker by Henry. He missed a splash and Trips picked him up, but Henry fell on him. Henry went to clothesline Triple H out but Trips low-bridged Henry for the elimination. Regal called off the third person and went down himself. He got in a barrage of offense, but Trips hung on. Spinebuster by Triple H. Regal was then thrown out, putting Triple H in the Rumble.

Winner: Triple H at 6:48.

-Jeff Hardy and Randy Orton were walking backstage, heading to the ring for their handshake.

[Break]

-Vince McMahon came out first. After introducing himself in HD, he brought out Randy Orton. Then, Jeff came out. Vince rhetorically asked what kind of match theyd have at the Rumble..one where risks or taken or one where someones head is kicked off? McMahon ordered them to come to the middle of the ring to shake hands. He asked if they had any last words and Randy said he was relieved at first when he heard Jeff was his opponent, because Jeff has never come close to winning the title. Hell never win the title, but hes won Randys respect. Jeff said he doesnt care about Randys respect.he didnt hit a 30-foot Swanton to impress Randy, he did it to hurt him. He did it for Matt and to prove hell do anything to win the championship. Jeff said if he was to shake hands of people he respected, Randy would have to get behind a long line. He then shook JRs hand, Lawler and Lillians hand, then went ringside and asked random fans their name and shook theirs. Too bad he didnt shake the guy dressed as a bananas hand. Back in the ring, Orton extended his hand and demanded Hardy shake it. Instead, Hardy hit the Twist of Fate.

Did I hear JR right that Hardy would be the third person to hold both the WWE Title and the IC Title after Hogan and Triple H? Warrior might like a word.

The new set is awesome even in SD.

- Jeriemo's (see what I did there?) serious promo skill set seems to be somewhat lacking since his return. The whole story about having to earn back the fleeting respect of his, I'm sure, genius of a four year old that can comprehend JBL really reeked of a re-hash of a Foley interview circa late 1999 or so.

- Respect was a huge issue tonight by the way. What? No respect for Mark Eaton or the camaramen?

- I don't know if the new HD camaras have a slow reaction time to the fade out function, but it seemed like the cut to commercials were WAY behind tonight. I'm sure HHH was about five seconds away from saying "OK, are we clear?" during that never-ending zoom-in.

- I'm sure that Brian Kendrick isn't bummed at all about missing out on his favorite event. At MSG. You know. In favor of a midget wrestler.

- I laughed at both the 3D glasses joke and the man in the banana suit. I quit.

It's been so long since I saw Raw live on TV.

HD looked great. I thought the new setup was somewhat like the recent SNME setup a little. $20 million for the conversion and one of the panels in the back was not working from halfway through. The new graphics is better. The only drawback for me is on HD, they have the WWEHD logo in the extreme upper left of the screen. I got two other logos on my screen...now I need a line below me telling what matchups are coming.

I heard the error with Hogan/Warrior for the first IC/World champion simultaneously. When I heard that, I thought "Someone's going to realize it." Apparently, someone beat me to it.

If I had never watched wrestling before, this would have been a very effective show to get me to purchase the Rumble based on the main event. The video packages for Orton and Hardy were excellent.

However, the combination of showing HHH winning the Rumble in 2002 and the way his qualifying match went left me feeling little doubt that he and Orton are winning Sunday and going to the main event of WM. And I don't think that's worth my $40 Sunday or my $50 on WM Sunday.

I laughed at Michaels rubbing Kennedy's shirt against his crotch....and then throwing it into the crowd. Uh, nice souvenir?

They've sold me on the Rumble this weekend due to his Hardy-Orton build. Though Hardy isn't going to win, he's definitely been elevated by this feud, to the point that Orton's credibility will actually be helped by beating Jeff. I see this ending like the Angle-Benoit match at the 2003 Rumble, with Benoit getting a standing ovation in a losing effort (I tried to think of an example that didn't involve The Pariah, but couldn't, sorry).

Really nice finish in the Michaels-Kennedy match. I wonder if HBK will continue to use that leglock, or if that was just a clever two-week build to get up the ending of this match.

How you uh, how you comin' on that novel you're working on? Huh? Gotta a big, uh, big stack of papers there? Gotta, gotta nice litte story you're working on there? Your big novel you've been working on for 3 years? Huh? Gotta, gotta compelling protaganist? Yeah? Gotta obstacle for him to overcome? Huh? Gotta story brewing there? Working on, working on that for quite some time? Huh? Yea, talking about that 3 years ago. Been working on that the whole time? Nice little narrative? Beginning, middle, and end? Some friends become enemies, some enemies become friends? At the end your main character is richer from the experience? Yeah? Yeah?

So HD with no widescreen? Ugh, I hate using the stretch option.

In a perfect world Hardy wins and Trips goes full-on heel or Hardy vs. HBK in a ladder match for the belt.

That's what I'd book. As one-sided as the build has been lately, they really need to say "damn the 50-50 booking philosophy" to themselves and put the belt on Jeff. Vince hasn't had an opportunity to truly make a new main event star like this since Cena & Batista rose at the same time three years ago, and if Orton goes over clean it'll DESTROY Jeff and render him the equivalent of what Monty Brown was in TNA. With all the main-event level talent on RAW (Orton, Jeff, Cena when he comes back, Lashley when he comes back, Trips, HBK, JBL, Jericho; heck, you can even count Umaga) it's really a now-or-"never" situation as far as elevating him is concerned.

So [fantasy booking alert] Hardy wins at the Rumble, then beats Orton again in a rematch at NWO, while Shawn wins the Elimination Chamber match to get the WM title shot (this is presuming that UT wins the Rumble again). I'd then restrict the MITB match to former champions for this year and put Lashley, Trips, JBL & Jericho in there, while Orton gets to truly live the Legend Killer gimmick and retire Flair as a means of rebuilding him [/fantasy booking alert].

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

I don't think there's any other live sports programming that does it that way, though. What you SHOULD be complaining about is having to settle for USA instead of USA HD! (And I guess the fact that it IS a single feed accounts for the wonky logos everywhere/no "USA HD" logo on the HD channel nonsense as well...)

Why wasn't Trevor Murdoch consoling Mickie James? Are they not friends anymore? :`(

They should have called tonight's show: HanDshake

Strange that Orton came off as the bigger man, actually offering the hand, and Hardy was all heely and attacking, but the kids seemed to dig it.

OK, now I'm confused. I will admit I haven't been following this HD thing too closely because I assumed there was a USA HD channel.

How exactly did this work last night? You tuned in regular USA but got an HD feed off of it? Am I failing at reading comprehension here?

Orton won't beat Jeff clean. They might even do the DQ, like they have in Orton's first match in his last two programs, and take it to No Way Out. Jeff is almost certainly not going to win the title, but they pretty clearly realize they've got something good going with him, hence all the buildup, video packages, how strong he's looked. Him not winning the belt won't undo that if they position him strong coming out of it.
I figure they'll keep the program with Orton going and then have him win Money in the Bank. Then you could even move him to Smackdown since they'll need fresh top babyfaces to work with Edge and he can have a real shot at a top spot free of the Raw babyface logjam after Cena comes back. Though HHH will probably be going heel a bit after he wins the belt so Jeff would have a built-in challenge for him too.

Maybe?

If you were watching USA, you were getting the cropped-at-the-sides picture.

If you were watching USA HD, you got the "whole" picture.

It's the same as watching (I'll say "most") other sports - during the football game you'll get to see most of the players when they line up, but in HD you might also get another five yards on either side of the line of scrimmage.

There was also no noticeable upgrade in picture quality on regular USA. But non-digital standard definition channels always look bad on my HDTV. I wonder what it would have looked like if I had DirectTV or something. (But then I would have been watching it on USA HD and I wouldn't have cared.)

I'm kind of surprised that at no point they didn't mention off hand "calling your local cable/satellite provider" et cetera and bug them about adding USA HD since only D* and a select few cable systems currently carry it. As with a lot of HD telecasts, I bet there's a large number of people who didn't realize their feed *wasn't* HD.

Comcast here has USAHD and it was noticeable the change in picture quality. Strangely I think I noticed it more in the opening than anywhere else.

Bix registered on AVSforum just to post some screen grabs. (I'm assuming that's the same Bix ) I've stolen one for demo purposes here.

You can kinda draw some invisible lines immediately to the left and right of the WWE and USA bugs and come up with a SD-sized box. (I could also draw one in with Paint if I were at my workstation, but I'm not, so use your imag-i-nation.)

All three grabs here (avsforum.com)

One thing I noticed was that Kennedy and Michaels did a lot of wrestling outside that phantom box, so SD viewers probably saw (for instance) a lot of instances of people cut in half off the edge of their screens.

I think if you have a HDMI connection from your HD Cable box you automatically get it in HD format? At least that was what I thought? Anyway it looked allot clearer on my flat screen this week than in previous weeks. That new Triple H shirt is wicked. Mickie James jobbing in her home state and then her meltdown later. The new set looked cool too, but it looked like a panel was blown out on Jericho's right side as he was entering the ring, or was there where Jericho came out?

You get it in HD format if your provider offers it. With the few cablers that do (Comcast, AT&T, maybe a couple others) you have to be on the specific channel for it - there's the standard USA channel and then a separate HD channel. DirecTV is the only satellite provider with USA HD - no Dish Network yet - and there are, again, a separate USA SD and USA HD channel, although some of the newer receivers map down so that the HD feed automatically replaces the SD feed and you never have to worry about the former.

There are two channels: USA and USA-HD. If you tune into the regular USA channel, you get the standard def version of RAW. If your cable/sat company carries USA-HD, you tune to that channel (most likely much higher up like 200something or whatever) to get the HD version of RAW. Comcast in my area does not offer USA HD or Sci-Fi HD yet, so the only WWE HD programming I will get is Smackdown.

I am hope Comcast gets USA HD soon though.
