I can't stand Benoit's promos either, but at least he puts some intensity into whatever it is he's trying to mumble.

Plus, Benoit has the added benefit of 20 years experience (in wrestling, promos and watching both done by others) which allows him to adapt. Check out his promos now compared to his WWF arrival in 2000: he picks & chooses where to kick in the shouting so it's effective (See: WrestleMania XX backstage segment with Benoit & Eddie Guerrero).

i cant believe that some recappers are giving this show a thumbs up, saying the writing was good. I personally thought this was one of the worst raw's in a long time. So much crap on one show. John Cena makes me look like a good actor. Seriously, he reminds me of Zack Morris when he "acts".

HBK's promo was easily the highlight of the night. It was old school, it was exciting and it was on the money. I hope the old HBK is back, because that IS something to tivo raw for.

I also was into Jericho's promo too. When 2 promos stand out as the best on a "wrestling show" that had so many skits recappers should start rating them, that should tell you something.

Would also like to note that the lord alfred hayes tribute made me chuckle, not just at his lordships antics over the years, not just at the fact that i nervously laughed when the "tribute" song kicked in but because Stetson cologne is harrrrrd to resist, stetson fits.

The Edge chokeslam/lita tombstone were "holy sh*t" moments. When RAW was the best show on TV it was because of the "shoots" and the "holy sh*t's" mixed in with some hot in ring matches. I saw some signs of that mixed in with the lame acting tonight. With the Hardy angle, an old school HBK, a healthy RVD and the likes of Angle, Shelton and an over Cena, there should be no excuse for crappy shows in the near future.

i hope.

Yeah, cloaca can be a really good insult to use. It's like calling someone both a pussy and an asshole at the same time. Plus, they probably won't understand it anyways.

When Bischoff was going off on the rant, was I the only one expecting him to turn around to see Vince?
Dumb chick Maria had a thought that could be turned into a good idea: Statler and Waldorf replacing Ross and Lawler. It would be the best booth since Monsoon/Heenan.
At least we now know why Ross has turned clueless: He steals his call from John Sterling. It is High, It is Far, It is Gone. Now, he really needs to break into a classic Sterling call: IT IS HIGH, IT IS FAR, IT IS GONE. Wait, it was caught by the shortstop. Well, we don't have a monitor.
When did Carlito and Jericho patch up there differences?
The natural cycle of wrestling: When the women's division disappears, you bring in midgets. When the midgets disappear, you bring in the women's wrestling. One can only exist without the existance of the other. And, if you are going to have a 600 lb guy in a match with a midget, he has to do a splash on the midget.

I will try to defend Cena. The guy took a joke at the Xmas party skit and has turned it into gold. He has "it", that intangible is hard to describe but you either have it or you don't. When he first came out with the rapper gimmick and rapped his way through promos, he was different than everyone else. I remember marking out during his promo on Lesnar and the "let me rewind that" part. I thought it was also neat how he came out and rapped through his whole promo at the Rumble in 2003. Honestly, he brought me back to the Attitude era for a moment when I really had a blast watching wrestling.

When he comes on, he has a presence about him (much like the Rock or SCSA) that just jumps at you. Yeah, the guy's workrate isn't near Benoit/Guerrero/Angle/etc. but he can carry a guy during promos pretty well and doesn't embarrass himself in the ring.

My main thoughts on RAW:

Eugene/Angle is going to be a sweet angle. Both guys can go and their interaction will be off the charts.

Benjamin really needs a manager. The guy has everything except he can't cut a promo worth crap. Cornette would be perfect for a guy like him, Benjamin has that sneer down and Cornette would be the perfect guy to talk up Shelton as this athletic superstar who no one can stop. Heyman wouldn't be a bad choice for Benjamin either.

I threw up in my mouth when I saw an All-American not able to break out of a full-nelson (I know it's fake but any person who knows Benjamin's backgroud would really have to suspend belief on that). Jobbing Benjamin out to that roided up stiff is stupid.

You know.... I didn't even REALIZE that there was a Matt Hardy run-in until I read about this morning (it was completely edited out in Canada because it coincided with all that Kane-Lita violence). I kept thinking "Why would they have this match and NOT have Hardy there this week?". So one mystery solved.

The one mystery I haven't solved is why they're making Shelton Benjamin submit to The Masterlock. A punishment for all those botched moves last week? Or have they just hired SmackDown's writing team? Bizarre stuff....

Eugene was a nice surprise. It gives Angle something interesting to do at SummerSlam as well, so I'm all for it.

Michaels was absolute gold this week, even if everyone watching knew it wasn't "really" a shoot. Who cares? Very effective way to build up the match.

They had a perfect chance to end the Kane/Edge-Lita feud last night. Edge had beaten Kane twice in consecutive weeks in gimmick matches. Edge got a decisive (cheat to) win, and then Kane Rey-Reyed him into the wall and tombstoned Lita. That's the capper moment in a feud where you chase a jezebel. He finally got his revenge. End of angle, bring on Matt. Kane moves to another story.

But no. Kane hijacks the ambulance with Lita inside, and in a compromise for the cameras, leaves the back door open. I was waiting for her to roll out when he slammed on the gas. There's no need to keep him against this pair, and no need to risk making him the bad guy by kidnapping the vulnerable woman -- whorish ex or not. Stupid stupid stupid. This can only lead to Kane/Matt vs. Edge/Snitsky matches when Kane is instead the best guy to put over the Boogeyman.

This was a good Raw to switch away from often to allow The Lovely Mrs. Tracker to catch older episodes of West Wing. So I missed the Hayes tribute, sadly.

I only got home in time to catch the end, and even than I was only half paying attention, I thought that the Cena/Carlito match was for the world title, and lets just say it wasn't as exciting when I found out that it was for a title shot. Damn it! I want a champion who is cool.

HBK was awesome tonight. Now all he needs to complete his 97 look is to come out with a lolly pop and crotch chop the crowd as many times as possible.

I'll nitpick. Wordlife - it was a halloween skit.

Onto the show: the first hour was bad. Maybe it's just me, but I can't see the humor in midgets wrestling. "Hey, look - they're different than us. Let's laugh at 'em!" just makes me feel uncomfortable. Divas eating? I wonder how many of 'em purged afterwards (okay, maybe that's crossing the line). I just channel-surfed through the music thing.

The second hour was okay. Kane really took some nasty-looking shots from that briefcase. I liked the sit-up right before crossing the line. I think they could've played-up more antagonism between Jericho/Carlito during the match, but it was okay for what it was (even if it could've been so much more).

None of the other Canadians mentioned this, but when I was watching RAW last night, during the Kane/Edge Match, at the end whenever Kane made a threatening move toward Lita, TSN cut to a commercial. They did it twice. The first time was a quick thirty second spot, then back to the action. The second time, the commercials went on for minutes, only coming back to the show as Kane drove off in the ambulance with Lita in the back.

I missed all the action between Kane sitting up off the stretcher after Edge pulled him over the "line of demarcation" up until Kane's getaway in the ambulance. I missed anything that had to do with Matt Hardy.

Did this happen to anyone else, or was there just something screwy with my cable?

EDIT: Oooops... missed Bulldog's post.

He clobbered Edge from behind on the ramp and was immediately swarmed by cops. Edge's profanity was muted. He walked over to plunk Matt and was held back. It wasn't much to see. But the crowd was INSANE for Matt.

Not that I agree, but I think they're trying to make Masters look stronger and even credible as they lead up to his feud with Show. I wouldn't have had a problem with it if they had done a better ref bump, and LOTS more double-teaming with Snitsky before the MASTERLOCK was applied.

They broke the unwritten rule last night - the solo guy in a handicap match always beats two opponents. Perhaps they're trying to regain the "anything can happen" vibe.

I agree wholeheartedly that Shelton needs a manager/mouthpiece, but be careful what you ask for - they're might give him one of the divastrippersluts.

I'm looking forward to Eugene/Angle.

HBK's promo was first rate, but I'm still hoping Hogan lies down for him.

Carlito proves again he is ten times better backstage than he is in the ring. Since he won a shot at Cena, anyone else wondering will Summerslam be a three-way dance with Jericho?

Carlito's title shot with Cena is next week on RAW, according to Bischoff. What Jericho will do next week is up in the air. Will he cost Cena the match or will he cost Carlito the match? Does Jericho specifically want to wrestle John Cena at Summerslam to win the title and prove his superiority, or would he rather wrestle Carlito, an "easier" opponent at Summerslam?

They will likely take the slippery way out of that question by having Jericho interfere against Cena, it backfires, and Cena wins with the FU.

Jericho doesn't seem interested in wrestling before his big title match. You'd think they'd put him in the ring with Shelton, Kane or whatever upper mid card face is left on RAW so he could get a TV win and some momentum going into Summerslam.

As for HBK, "shoot" comments that aren't really shoot comments aren't enough for me. I want the old degenerate HBK back more than almost anything, but I just don't believe Shawn Michaels is sincere about being the asshole heel he once was. I guess I won't be happy until he humps a flag in the middle of the ring. Something like that would be the proof I need.

I'll stand up for the Cena concert as decent. I've sampled a ton of hip-hop from the mainstream to the insanely indie and what they had going on here was acceptable for a wrestling act trying to produce something listenable -- the audio mix was kind of off and Bad Man is not a great track but they did what they could. (I think We Didn't Want You To Know and What Would You Do off his album are his strongest work. Trademarc's decent too.)

I was laughing my ass off at Jericho backing out, since it makes perfect sense and keeps the heel heat on him -- as well as not giving the crowd a chance to turn the way the WWE doesn't want them to turn, which they could've done if Fozzy went first and then Cena.

I can see Shelton jobbing out. He still lasted more than the 2-3 seconds refs usually take to declare a submission with Masters, and it was a 2-on-1 of power guys against a technical guy. There was plenty of beatdown beforehand.

I like the possibilities of Eugene vs. Angle; Angle plays good in comedy angles and Eugene does have technical skill when they give him time for a long match. Plus, the comedy keeps Angle injury free since it can be a mix of simple technical counters and humor spots. Or would you rather have him in an angle where he wants to have "beastiality" with Sharmell..?

Speaking as a fellow L.P., I was mixed on seeing "midget" (ugh, I HATE that word; it's too sideshow freak connotating) wrestlers in action, but those two guys worked their butts off selling and moving around the ring, so hat's off to 'em. I don't think he'd have slipped off Visceras back if not for the silk pajamas, too, so I'll file that blown spot under "wardrobe malfunction."

Something tells me next week, Angle will come down (in disguise I hope!) to try and win his medals back in the Eugene Invitational....Boy, that outfit Christy had on did not seem to be fitting her well....I thought Cena's segment backstage with Bischoff was alright, but Bischoff turning when talking to Cena was just too fake....The midget match was entertaining. The one getting tired by punching Viscera, then going back at him was hilarious....

Great Lord Alfred Hayes video package. I'm surprised they went to that length....As someone who doesn't like rap, I found Cena's performance to be pretty decent....The Michaels promo was very good. This is the one he should've given in the Pit....I'm surprised they jobbed Benjamin to Masters and Snitsky. But it seemed more to advance the Show/Masters feud than anything for Shelton....The diva thing was pathetic....

Edge and Kane was just okay- like some have said, they gotta take a hiatus from the Matt run-ins for a week or two to make it seem more spontaneous....The Main Event was okay, but I really noticed at the end tonight how much of a breath of fresh air it was to see someone other than Kane/Trips/Etc. in the M.E. segment of RAW.
