Er, I'm kinda warming up to the guy, too, if it's any consolation. I find myself looking forward to his appearances, he's not embarrassing himself in the ring anymore, and even the Masterlock is growing on me. I mean, yeah, it's a full nelson, but it looks like it really hurts. I think he was a little uncomfortable out there in front of an audience of thousands on live TV at first, but you can tell he's getting more into his character and acting more natural and spontaneous.

I agree ... He's starting to come into his own. I dug the way he sold a few of those kicks last night. He's not a horrible worker & he's pretty decent on the mic. Plus, he's only like 22 years old.

I think he'll get put into his first high profile feud after Summerslam.

Brock Brock Brock. Hey, I sound like a chicken.

Thought Masters looked pretty good in the ring last night with some good heel power moves. I can't get enough butterfly suplexes.

The whole "Bret screwed Bret omgzors" stuff happened several years before Owen's tragic passing (1997 vrs 1999). No way in hell should any of the hart family have anything to do with VKM *now*, but that doesn't change the fact that even before Owen's untimely death, I'm sure Vince would have loved to make money off the RL screwjob that was HBK/Bret. And it would have been a huge angle, and it would have made Bret buckets and buckets of money, and possibly even prempted the Austin/ VKM feud (my memory is fuzzy on when Austin became Vince's foil, but 1997 may be earlier then that? not sure) But Bret would have nothing to do with Vince, or maybe he was locked into a contract at WCW he couldn't get out of, and the WWF was unwilling to buy him out of it. And then Owen died, and well, I don't blame Bret for hating Vince's guts before that, but now there's no way in hell he'd work an angle with the guy.

Stampede workers have done dark matches on Calgary & Edmonton WWE shows since 1997 (and 1999). In particular, Teddy Hart (Bret's nephew) worked Velocity back in May and Harry Smith (Bret's nephew and the late British Bulldog's son) worked a set of dark matches, and reportedly was even offered a developmental contract. I think the whole Matt Hardy scenario has proved the "Money talks" adage to a T.

They did this so well, I'd love to know who wrote this storyline up? Was it Matt going to Vince, saying he had a great idea, or was this just thrown together after Matt started getting the chants and the crowds started calling Lita a slut and telling Edge that he 'screwed Lita'? I don't know for sure if I really LOVED getting 'worked' but it did make me feel kinda tingly inside...

Matt needs to give up some of the burgers he's been eating to Lindsay Lohan.

So a couple weeks ago, we had a match where Shawn Michaels calls up Hogan and asks him to be in a six man match with John Cena; the current title holder. What's the big match to come out of that six-man tag match... why, Shawn Michaels Vs. Hulk Hogan. Nice way to shove the title further down the crapper. Nice way to show that it isn't even more important then Matt Hardy Vs. Edge. Does the title really even matter any more on this show?

I'd rate the episode an 'A'.

Where does he steal material from them? I don't know of anyone who thinks "man, that's just like what Austin would say" or "Whoa! Someone's been watching Mick Foley promos!" whenever Cena talks. He may remind people of the Rock once in a while, but even that is just more because they are both young and both play to the crowd more than the rest of the roster.

The funny thing is, at Raw last night I distinctively remember saying "man he stole that from Austin" when he busted out the ol' '20,000 people callin' you an asshole' line. His "(Insert city name)...The Champ is HEEEEERE" reeks of The Rock and "Finally The Rock has come back to...(Insert city name)". Rock used to pretend he was from places too that he wasn't, to seem like one of the "people". "Dirty Jersey"? You're from Mass, brotha. His mannerisms are very Rock-like, and so is his wrestling style. He does "variations" of moves like the "hip toss", like Rock used to do with his "versions" of moves like the belly to belly.

I don't see much Foley cause he was loveable and stupid. Cena comes off as trying to be cool, which looks a ton like The Rock to me. I always call him the "New Rock", because my dislike for both characters are for the same exact reasons.
At least Rock could A) Punch.
B) Insult people without gratuitous use of homey.
C) Debate. This sounds stupid, but Jericho never once mentioned the fans and that Cena was below him because Cena is like the fans. But Cena stuck to that point like glue. And I half thought Jericho's "the FUCK are you rambling about Marky Mark?" expression was a shoot.
D) Perform a slam finisher that looked intense and not like you were gingerly dropping someone on their back. That move doesn't even look threatening in Def Jam.

But yeah, the Elbow and the Shuffle suck.

Point is, the final defense of Cena is always "He has lots of time to improve!"

Shit, I could defend Snitsky with that but I'm not gonna. Cena fans, unlike the other guilty pleasure fans, seem unable to give up the ghost and admit the guy is a black hole of suck from bell to bell.

And none of that matters because he's still the hottest professional wrestler in the company right now despite all of his limitations. If he improves in the ring to please the workrate type fans, that will just be the icing on the cake. And the comparison between Cena and Snitsky doesn't work. Cena is bad, but he's nowhere near that bad.

I think it's way to early to determine that the title is being buried on Raw. Hogan vs Michaels should have been pushed as the main event of Summerslam (and main attraction on Raw) because it is one of the few remaining "dream matches" that WWE has that can potentially draw a huge buyrate just by being on the show. I don't see how Hardy vs Edge is being pushed as more important than Cena vs Jericho. No matter how they executed the angle, the crowd was going to go apeshit. We'll have to see how it's pushed in upcoming weeks, but I doubt it is going to be ahead of the WWE Title match at Summerslam.

Now of course if those two matches are higher on the card at Summerslam, and so is the World Title match and Orton-Taker (presumably), then I'll eat crow. :)

There's no doubt that Cena is god-awful in the ring. However, ring-work isn't the biggest factor in being a main-eventer. Cena is incredibly over, has something about him that the crowd (especially the young crowd) identify with, he sells merchandise (I think at last check he had 3 of the top 5 selling items on Shopzone).... overall, he's the best thing they've got going right now as far as main-event potential.

Yes, he's horrendous in the ring. But he's got too much momentum right now to slow down over that. They've stopped guys momentum way too much over the past few years for things the fans really don't seem to care about (Jericho can't work WWE-style, Van Dam is too reckless, Christian is too small, Booker T is.... something). They shouldn't make that same mistake again.

I agree with Omega. Cena's way over, especially with the kids, and with all the "shoots" and diva stripping, it seems that WWE's forgotten what got them the fans in the first place - people who were hooked as kids.
Kids don't care that Undertaker never sells - he's the Undertaker, and he's supposed to be almost invincible. Kids don't care about the Matt/Lita/Edge situation behind the scenes. They thought Lita was done with him when she went evil with Kane, and they don't understand why Matt would be mad at Edge, and they don't care either.
A big part of the popularity of the Attitude era was that it was funny, and kids liked it. They bought the merch and they bugged the parents to take them to the events. Since this new "adult soap opera" Stephanie-crap started, kids have turned off something that traditionally they loved and supported, and while they never say it, I think that's a big part of why they're losing fans. They don't try hard enough to develop new ones who'll stick with the product.
I think it's cool that they do have somebody who appeals to kids for a change. How much "Katie Vick" can you really take, anyway?

Jericho calling Carlito "Sideshow Bob". LOVED. IT.

So I'm sittin' there watchin' "Piper's Pit". HBK turns to walk away. Stops. Piper bitches him out.

And all the while I'm thinkin' jump down, turn around, superkick on Roddy.

The rest of the show? I have no desire to rain on anyone's parade and choose to offer no comment.

You *do* realize that Cena goes all the way down w/ the finisher now, don't you? He took it easy on Bisch because he's not a wrestler. The Angle Slam isn't that vicious looking, either.

The "Peoples Elbow" is terribly vicious too

No matter how bad Cena's workrate may be, the E doesn't really care. It's about selling merch, and he does that just fine!

If that's fat, I wish I was fat like that.

I agree with whoever said it was the Eddie Guerrero memorial "crusierweight-no-more" training regimen.

From what I understand, wrestling every night is tremendous aerobic exercise, and it tends to take both fat and muscle off the bodies of the athletes, which is why, I'm betting, that Edge (among others who've returned from injuries) is no longer as huge as he once was. Even Trips, who inspired the euphemism "triple H swol", is nowhere near as big as he has been in the past. Makes you wonder how people like Chris masters and Brock Lesnar keep the muscle on... even with the obvious (ok, *alleged*) chemical help. Maybe they only wrestle one or two nights a week instead of 4 or 5?

Here's my 2 cents on the Cena workrate argument

Growing up here in New York in the 80s my favorite wrestler was Hulk Hogan

Did I see ***** main event matches?

Did I care?

I'm 27 years old now...and while I can't claim to be a Cena fan several people around me mouthed the word "Austin" when he came out the first time and the place went nuts. Not saying it was the level of Austin but clearly the guy has fans. Cena shirts were everywhere you looked and almost every kid under 10 had the big plastic Cena hand so they could give their friends the middle finger

If he progresses wrestling wise that's just a bonus because WWE smells $$$

Not always.

As for Angle, well I was riffing on the Cena/Rock comparisons. At least the Angle Slam leaves you prone for the heelhook ankle lock... and that's VICIOUS.

I've never said Cena wasn't "over" with the kids or that four star matches were a requirement for the main event. But the Rock could at least have a good match and not be carried to one.

Ok... done with bagging on Cena.

Or should I say... John CHEAP-a?

We can all argue up and down who we think is on Vitamin S and who isn't, but there are some people who have ungodly genes/metabolisms and are able to deal with that type of rigor to where they're able to maintain themselves as long as they stick to a regimen.

I'm not naive enough to say that's the case 100% of the time among wrestlers, but it is humanly possible.
