Impersonations? Check. Midgets? Check. Girls with DX bras? Check. Spray paint? Check. I did chuckle a time or two during the skit last night, but I couldn't help but wonder why they just can't evolve the gimmick a bit so it is not so dated. This whole DX reunion and the rebirth of ECW (which I want to like) just screams that they are absolutely out of ideas.

Well, a big point of nostalgia is for nostalgia. That's like asking why C-3PO was in the Star Wars prequel. Yeah, we've seen it, but that's the point. When the Rolling Stones go on tour, fans don't want to hear the new stuff. And to be fair, the original DX was doing this stuff 8-9 years ago but there's a good portion of the audience that does find this stuff new. Also, the DX reunion kind of just happened, once the crowd at 'Mania got into the crotch chops, it snowballed. I saw the stuff in '97 and '98, minus the WCW invastion stuff, this stuff is about as moderately amusing as the initial stuff was.

What are some ways you'd freshen it up?

Also, the new ECW is NOTHING like the old ECW, so I think you're off your point there. That's 3 letters used for marketing purposes to launch a new brand.

I assume you mean *Shane* McMahon, who is five years younger than Michaels. (I discovered while researching this that Shane is a year younger than me. Goddess, I'm old.)

C'mon now J-Sharp, I thought the Vince Ear-Pull (with Incredulous Vince Look~!) was pretty sweet. Could have used a couple dozen more "quite frankly"s though.

You're right. I will amend that.

Great:
Hunter's entrance
Certain verbiage
Ear pull
Shane's dance the first three times
Hunter doing the Stand Back
Crowd chanting "holy shit"
Shit being holy because of Shawn

Bad:
Deathly dead crowd
Way too long
Dicks
Shane's dance the other ten times
Missed opportunities with the dialogue
Poop payoff

Trish is a better worker than Carlito. He should be her valet.

Yeah, but how well does Melina work? Also, I don't really care for mixed tag, regardless of talent level.

I'd think Umaga is on a collision course with the Sandman. Both have destroyed Eugene for their own amusement, and while Umaga is beating up faded gimmick stars, Sandman is destroying WrestleCrap gimmicks. They seemed destined to face each other in some real shitty matches.

I think Umaga is doing the crazy Samoan gimmick pretty well. I don't know if it will work in a promotion this big or not though in this day and age.

The DX skit was a good idea, but my god did it die. The crowd just sat there in silence for most of it. They didn't respond to the jokes. The jokes that were funny were run into the ground (Shawn doing the Shane Dance was hilarious at first, but then he kept doing it and doing it and doing it). And the ending with the poop falling was just stupid. I'm not a big fan of poop jokes, because it just seems like a cheap laugh, and very rarely are they actually funny. This was not one of those times.

I give them an 'A' for the idea, but a 'D' for the execution. I will say, though, that Hunter's impression of Vince was SPOT ON (I especially loved the ear-pulling reaction when "Shane" came out).

The RVD/Cena match was very good. I was hoping they'd hold off the three-way until SummerSlam, but whatever. These three are on a roll of having great matches with each other, so I'm looking forward to SNME.

Other than that, a pretty forgettable show (as in, I don't remember anything else that happened).

Anyone know if Doink at Vengeance and Kimchee at Raw were both Steve Lombardi. He used to play Kimchee and has been 1 of the 5 Doinks.

If you have been watching, than how long will it take to realize it's just the way it is right now? I think everyone who hates the way women's wrestling is treated by WWE has had plenty of time to make that point by now. All the same goes for Lawler's announcing, as well.

In my own defense, I wasn't bothered by the fact that Jerry Lawler called a crappy women's match, it's the fact that they seem to be trying to avoid the "sport" aspect of "sports-entertainment". He acts this way in almost every match, male or female.

Another example is that a few weeks ago, Joey Styles was making it a point that WWE doesn't refer to their television stars as wrestlers anymore. Now, not even the ECW guys are called by that term. They are called "ECW Extremists" (or rebels, depending on the week).

I have been bothered my it for a while now, but never really wrote much on the subject.

I don't understand why people are saying Mickie is being pushed aside. Trish got SQUASHED. Maybe after the injury Trish doesn't want to be as active in the ring anymore. That's why they did the whole Carlito tie in. Couple of cat fights, but mostly Nitro and Carlito in the ring.

Sorry for rambling just my thoughts. Anyway other than that most of Raw was "Fast Forward Moment" for me. I will say that Shawn Michaels is by far the weak link in DX. They need to get someone(s) else soon before the crowd gets REAL quiet.

Yes the DX skits seem "recycled" but it is still better than the crap that was on WWE before the DX reunion.

Something tells me we'll be seeing DX for a while. Looks like the ratings spiked for their appearance, this according to PWInsider.com:

While I understand the DX stuff is new to fans that didn't watch back in the day, these skits just don't seem that funny. And I have gone back recently and watched some of that classic DX stuff, and it still holds up. The difference is the writing I suppose. Not that they need to bring back Russo, but so much of this stuff is falling flat to me. So I guess they don't necessarily have to "freshen up" the angle, they just need better, funnier material to work with. Shawn and Trips can perform like few others in the business when it comes to stuff like this, but not with mediocre material. I think they recognize this too, and wouldn't be surprised if HHH is riping creative a new one. Maybe the difference is that now they are faces pandering to the crown, when originally they were heels who truly seemed like they were doing whatever the hell they wanted to do.

Bingo.

First let me say I enjoyed a lot of the segment, but it went on way too long with ten minutes of material stretched out to whatever length it ended up being.

Having said that, Shawn Michaels is definitely the weak link. I hate to say that because he's one of my all time favourites, but it's just not working. The problem is Shawn is better than anybody at playing the DX role, but only as a heel. Go back and watch that amazing promo in Canada last year during the Hogan feud. That was DX Shawn. Probably my favourite promo of the last five years because Shawn was the biggest asshole on the planet for those 20 minutes, but he was damn entertaining in the process.

Shawn keeps doing the "And if you ain't down with that, we've got two words for you" catchphrase, and maybe someone who's watched the old shows recently can enlighten me, but I don't remember him ever emphasizing that during his initial DX run. I always remember that as Billy Gunn's follow up line after Road Dogg would do his spiel. All the pranks they're doing (like the parody skit) are all hallmarks of face DX, which was the post-Shawn DX. So with Shawn there it seems they are trying to recreate something that didn't quite exist in the first place. For DX to work, they need to have them act like heels, even if they are treated as faces, which is something that the writing staff has long forgotten how to do.

I think they ruined the gimmick when Shawn blindfolded himself in the DX Raw debut. What kind of heartbreaker anything-goes rebel can't ogle women in bikinis?

A married Christian one.

All kidding aside, I found this today on Gerweck.net

According to a report in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, an industry insider has indicated that Shawn Michaels is uncomfortable being apart of DX once again. HBK believes fans will view his role in the reunited group as a contradiction from what he has been preaching in recent years.

Take it with a grain of salt but still...

While I respect Shawn Michaels and his morals, he must realize that he is basically just an actor. If he wants to point at his johnson and yell "suck it", then go the church on Sunday, I have no problem with it.

But obviously he may feel that if he participates in these shenanigans, his outward witness will lack. I don't have a problem either mind you. I go to church regularly, in fact I work in the media ministry at my church every week with the Power Point and TV editing. I also watch wrestling and work for 2 different wrestling companies in some capacity. But I only work wrestling shows in front of 300 people not 20,000 plus millions watching world wide. His conscience may be getting the best of him.
