Don't forget the WWF teams The Moondogs (Rex & King and Rex & Spot), and Demolition (Axe & Smash and Smash & Crush) did it too.

But, yes, this is the first 5-way 2-man belt.

Also, the Russians of Ivan and Nikita Koloff along with Krusher Krushchev did it in the NWA in '85, thus meaning Darsow pulled the 'Freebirds Rule' trick on two separate occassions in two separate organizations.

It's probably been said earlier in the thread but I thought the Natural Born Thrillers did this in WCW near the end as well.

Add the Jersey Triad (DDP, Kanyon, and Bam Bam Bigelow), if we're talking WCW.

I'm pretty sure it was always Jindrak/O'Haire or Stasiak/Palumbo as champs(rather than the NBT as a whole) and then at the end of WCW Palumbo/O'Haire. I can't think of any interchanging defenses either.

I'm pretty sure the Triad sometimes even defended the titles with all three as official participants. Did the Freebirds ever do that?

Figure he was challenging God to a cage match - but can someone fill in the blanks?

Because - YOU ASKED FOR IT:

Vince and Shane enter a Catholic church. (Yes - this does sound like the set-up for a joke.) Vince is leaning pretty heavily on the handrails - the quads must still be bothering him. Vince has been looking for Shawn Michael's tag-team partner, and he understands that CHURCH is the place to find him. As he admires the stained-glass windows, Vince tells Shane to "sign us in", then hands him a credit card to make a donation. When Shane tells him it's cash only, Vince sneers and says "What kind of business are they running?"

They enter the nave of the church, where a holy water font is located just inside the doors. Vince, feigning ignorance, moves to wash his hands in the font, but Shane motions to him not to do that. (Interestingly, Shane doesn't use the font at all.) As Shane walks by, Vince slurps up a handful of water from the font and re-enacts HHH's Ringside Spit Fountain.

Vince and Shane make their way to the front of the church and stand outside the altar railing. Vince turns to the nave and calls out God as if he were standing in a WWE ring. He begins comparing himself to God: God created the Earth, Vince created WWE; God created Adam and Eve, Vince created Stone Cold Steve Austin; God had his disciples, Vince has his disciple, Shane (I guess Ed Leslie couldn't be there); God cast Satan into the depths of hell, Vince cast Ted Turner out of business. However, Vince has a stronger work ethic, because he doesn't take a day off each week. Vince then presents his Commandments, based on what Shawn did in the build-up to Wrestlemania: "I am the boss, there are no other bosses before me"; thou shalt not - tell him to "move on", throw urine on him, tell him to "suck it" (with the dX chop), push his disciple into his "rectal cavity", or Van Terminate/Coast-to-Coast him from atop a ladder. Vince states that Shawn broke all of his Commandments, and must now face the Backlash.

Vince and Shane then move to the lectern, for Shane to lead us in prayer. Shane starts a rendition of the 23rd Psalm, rewritten to favor Vince - "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil...except Vince McMahon and his disciple Shane!" However, even Shane gets squicked out preaching about his father's testicles and semen from the front of a Catholic church, and turns to Vince, stating, "Dad, this is a little weird". Vince looks offended and walks to the altar for the big finale.

Inside the railing - in front of the altar - Vince turns to the nave, rants about how he will win at Backlash, and calls on God to strike him down if he's lying. (As he does so, Shane - who had been standing next to Vince - starts stepping backwards to avoid the lightning show. By the way, Shane's reactions to Vince were absolute GOLD and helped make this segment.) When no lightning appears, Vince states that "Shawn's God must have...forsaken him". Vince then rants that he will unleash Armageddon at Backlash, and God won't be able to stop him. As he says this, the camera - which had been filming from the choir loft - starts zooming out, as thunderclaps are heard. Exeunt.

As a short religious aside: if the Lord had demanded Vince's soul that night, how exactly would he have explained that scene (and the entire McMahon/Michaels storyline) to the Almighty?

Steph

Great recap of the scene, Stephanie. You said pretty much everything, though there was one more thing that I now remember about the scene that stood out.

After Vince did his Triple H impersonation (which was not particularly successful, though it was much better than RVD's), Vince asked, "How does he do that?" Hee.

It's been a while, but I thought that it was fun watching this.

1. The Church Scene - Weird and a little uncomfortable. LOL at Shane moving away from Vince. I was waiting for a bolt of lightning to hit Vince and have him do the shock treatment, including the dirt-faced, hair-messed result at the end.

2. Divas - I don't care what they are dressed in, they just look so cute...all of them.

3. Spirit Squad - IMO, if they were not stuck to the cheerleader gimmick, I could see them flourish. Of course, I said that about Rene Dupree, and look where he is now. Anyway, are there anymore tag teams left on RAW? Anymore tag teams, period???

4. Main Event, part 2 - Yeah, I agree that they will mix it up again, with Triple H going solo next week. However, those three are hilarious at the open, again. Next week, it will be more of the lather, rinse, repeat method.

5. For the first time in a couple of weeks, I did not have to tell Coach to shut up. The sandwich deal was funny.

6. That Alejandro guy, I've read his rants while in OVW. I hope they let him bring that humor to WWE. Umaga, I say two to three months before ending up on the B-shows.

Other stuff:
- Deputy Marshall, I agree with the redhead line. We don't have any in my family. It would be nice to marry one. Always room for a first.

- I know they will be overseas after St. Louis next week, but have they thought about where Raw/Smackdown for the 24th/28th is going to be. If you know, let me know.

Thanks, Stephanie, I appreciate it very much. I did get to see it, so not a lot of it really makes sense. I guess Shane is available for duty again - or did they film, do ya think, this segment wherever Shane lives.

I hope whatever church allowed them to film this thing got some serious building fund cash.

I just realized that someone already mentioned the Russians and Barry Darsow being a part of the same gimmick with two teams in two feds.

But I was hoping that when the Spirit Squad won the titles they would resurrect the gimmick. I am also a little bummed that no one has mentioned that is has happened before.

Didn't The Samoans use a 3rd while Sika was injured? I wanna say it was a very young Samu.

Actually, the Headshrinkers were the ones who used a third. Samu got injured and they brought in the Barbarian (I forget what his Samoan name was) to team with Fatu. I don't think they ever held the straps in this incarnation, though.

What if you split the Spirit Squad up into tag teams? That's almost a whole division right there.

I just want them to mention the Freebirds on TV so that I can dream that they're working on a Freebird DVD.

If the Spirit Squad can really use the "Freebird Rule", could they then defend against THEIRSELVES?

And if they did would it matter who tagged who or who was the legal man in the ring?

If the other squad member was the special referee, could he be pinned to end the match?

I'm thinking you meant that only as a joke, but I think it would be hilarious if they were to come out and say that, considering the recent tag team break-ups, they have no worthy challengers, so Mr. McMahon has approved a tag team title match between Kenny! and Mikey! against Nicky! and Johnny! And to make sure it's called right down the middle the ref will be (I forget. The one that doesn't end in y.)! I can just imagine Styles sputtering about how, since any SS member is allowed to defend the titles, it makes no difference who wins this match! And, look at them! They aren't even really fighting! They're just running the ropes and hopping around! Then, at the precise moment it stops being funny and starts being annoying, have a new team they are going to feud with come out and kick their asses.

Sorry about the extended fantasy booking of the Spirit Squad of all people; it just came to me.

Oh, god, it's happening again! Someone, help me. So to counteract the numbers game, two different tag teams could form an uneasy alliance to try to divest the Spirit Squad of the tag titles. Then you could have a four corners match with Spirit Squad teams in two of the corners. Then have the Spirit Squad misunderstand the rules, so when two SS guys are both legal at the same time, one lets the other pin him, thinking that means they win, but, no! It was an elimination match, and the ref sends the SS team that was eliminated to the back, so that the numbers are no longer with the SS.

Sorry, again, I don't know what's come over me. Better out than in, I guess...
