Behold the "Wise" Words of Renegade Raine, the Bishounen Hunter:
@ Jahnkekong: Holy crap, somebody actually DOES take my quizzes (even if that is a really old one)!
But anyways, I usually wind up tuning the show out while on the computer, but the TV had my full attention tonight. My sister and I had to hold ourselves from crying at many points during the show. Stephanie's comment on Eddie saying that he was going to be champion again just broke my heart...

I don't know if I'd consider it the "last" word because I assume there'll be more of those segments on Smackdown.
I thought the HHH and Steph segments were okay. Benoit, Chavo, and Rey were so close to Eddie that they could barely speak--Benoit even came out and said it was tough to find the words. Mr. and Mrs. H were able to hold it together a little more and say the things that needed to be said. I really liked how Hunter and Steph both wanted Eddie's family to know that they were all he ever talked about--they may have only said it because they weren't as close to Eddie and didn't have much else to say, but it still needed to be said.
On a more pragmatic level, WWE may have decided that it was tough to follow Benoit (or to end the show with him) and Hunter and Steph didn't want anyone else to have to do it.
Originally posted by ekedolphinAnd we see Eddie Guerrero’s last match ever, with Ken Kennedy. One of the managers I work with says she heard that the chair shot from Kennedy was one chair shot too many—please, someone tell me that isn’t true. I don’t want to believe that, but she obviously heard it from *someplace*, ‘cuz she didn’t see SmackDown.
This was conjectured by Superstar Billy Graham on Meltzer's WOL show last night. Paraphrasing (and someone correct me if my memory is foggy, I was in a fog all day yesterday after the news), Superstar told his wife that the chairshot looked a little off, like too much side of the chair and not enough of the flat edge. He wondered if it might have triggered an anyuerism from Eddie. Superstar's conjectures, not mine; I have the match on tape, but haven't watched it yet, so I can't give another take on it.
.
Sounds like Bruce Lee all over again. The rumours behind Lees death were not of an anuerysm but a magic punch. Dare I suggest this may be a shift of focus away from steroids etc. Superstar is a 'company ' man

The matches were immaterial here, but I thought HBK/Rey stood out as a great match, with Angle/Shelton coming in second....The "Eddie Moments" were a nice touch, and you could really see how talented he was. I think he could've been a good crossover star to TV/movies a la Steve Austin. I really think that....
I'm surprised Eugene didn't use any of Eddie's moves.....As for the tributes, the ones that got me most were Benoit and Batista. Benoit because you knew how close he was to Eddie (and like some, I'm surprised he held it in that long); and Batista because I totally did not see that coming.
I teared up most during the Benoit, Batista, Rey and Chavo ones, and also at the beginning when the crowd chanted "Thank You Eddie." Amazing.

... Liked Angle/Benjamin and Mysterio/Michaels a LOT. Styles was good on the mic.
My vision got a little blurry watching and listening to Chavo and Benoit, like I'm sure everyone else's was.
There were a couple of stinker matches, but that's to be expected of WWE these days; thankfully, there was far more good than bad.
I would have loved to see Cena drape the "old" WWE title belt that Guerrero actually wore (since that belt is idle) over the "Papi" t-shirt, rather than the spinner belt -- but that's quibbling.
Watching this sort of show is soooo bittersweet. There was such an underlying sadness to everything, I almost felt worn out when it was over. But, it always makes me smile and feel proud when I see the respect that these performers have for Eddie and for one another.
I hope I wasn't the only one who was hoping Eddie would somehow come out and save Cena from Bob and Randy Orton. Then, I caught myself, and dropped another tear or two. Man, I miss you, Eddie.
I'm surprised Eugene didn't use any of Eddie's moves.....

Yes, thank you, that really bugged me. It would have been much better to get rid of some of the nonsense in that match (Eugene tasting the energy bar, his interest in the scooter) with something that actually played tribute to Eddie. Eugene doing the "hit someone with a chair, then act like HE did it" bit would have hit the spot. (He could have messed up the spot if they thought it would make him seem to smart.) Or even just a frogsplash. This actually ties in with how they've failed to do anything at all fresh with Eugene's character lately.
I also didn't like the women's battle royal. A nice technical Trish/Victoria match would have been better.
And the one thing that really bugged me was Shawn Michaels saying that Eddie's death had brought every single person in the WWE together in prayer to Jesus. Really Shawn? Even the Jews? There's not one Muslim or Buddhist or atheist in the whole company? I know he meant well, but it's demeaning to someone like, say, Paul Heymann, who I'm sure is as sincerely broken up by Eddie's death as almost anyone (outside of the family and such), but doesn't happen to share Eddie and Shawn's beliefs. I'm just saying.
Sorry to focus on the negative; everything else was very good. I cried a lot at the opener. Hard to explain to my girlfriend why Eddie's death effected me so much, but she watched some of the show with me and although she's not a wrestling fan, I think she did see a bit of why he was so special.

Nah. You'd think coming from a wrestling family himself, he'd know better, or at least they'd have a tribute from him and his dad. Maybe on Smackdown? Great recap.
I like how they did the Smackdown/Raw mixed matches. It gave the show a "WWE family" type feel, which Vince always mentions but I don't think we've seen in a long time.
Thanks for the heads up on the Sixers game, Spiraling Shape. That's one of the things I love about this board. It seems I always find out about the pre-empts on here.
Well, I guess I'm going to go against the grain and say that I liked Eugene-Simon Dean last night.
Why? This was such a.... heavy show, so emotional, that it needed a quick comedy break to lighten things up a little bit. And, as someone else here mentioned, part of Eddie's persona was the comedy he brought to his matches, so this could still definitely be construed as a tribute to him.
Other than that.... the show was pretty much as I'd expected it to be. A lot of heartfelt, emotional moments where the matches became secondary. I hadn't yet read the spoilers (and still haven't for SmackDown), so I was quite impressed with the choices they went with here.
Hopefully, it was a good experience for the wrestlers and that they really DID want to go on with the show... it was definitely appreciated by the fans who were going through their own mourning of sorts.

I'm glad others feel this way about Mr. & Mrs. McMahon-Levesque taking the final two (broadcast) tribute slots. Chavo - his nephew - really should have had the last word over the future leaders of WWE. (I'm not quite sure why they are the future instead of Shane - does anybody else recall why that's so?)
Overall strong show, but I would have cut the Eugene/Dean match, which added nothing to the table. (If I were booking, I would also have taken note of the overwhelmingly negative crowd reaction Eugene received at his introduction. Dean received a better response, and he was supposed to be the heel.)

Do you really think there was a meeting held where they decided to hand these two slots over to them? And how is this the last word, seeing as SmackDown's also a tribute show on Friday? Can't we just drop this for a week?
Can we avoid a repeat of the pick-everything-to-shreds reception the Owen Hart tribute got online?
Benoit ... jeez. He had Mrs. Shem in tears, and I was misting up too. I'm really looking forward to his match on SD -- I can only imagine the kind of emotion he's got invested in it.
Batista's talk of how much pain Eddie was in and how he was "struggling" physically was disturbing. I certainly wouldn't have suspected, based on his in-ring performance. It's uncomfortable (but necessary) to be reminded how far these guys are willing to fuck up their bodies to keep performing for my entertainment.
"I don't think anyone anticipated the breach of the levees." -- George W. Bush, Good Morning America, September 1, 2005
Yesterday morning, people were stopping by my cube to see how I felt about Eddy's death. "It's almost like losing a family member," I said. It is. Last night, that angst and pain surged through the tv and wallowed in my heart, where it remains today.
I was distracted for the first 20 minutes of the show, but I'm glad that I taped the show. I cried last night and I cried more this morning, just watching the 20 minutes that I had missed.
I think the show was beautifully done and with a lot of class. Seeing Big Show and Rey break out the shimmy, which I loved to see Eddy do and mimick from time to time, just bought a smile to my face.
I would just be repeating everyone when I said what made the show great, but one thing I took away from last night is the need to re-shuffle the shows and the need for the suits to stop thinking that the cruiserweights can't compete with the big guys. Sure, not every guy is an HBK or a Mysterio, but there's a ton of potential and new feuds that could be made. That's what Eddie did... He went out there and won the title, defeating one of the bigger guys.
But, it was still a great show and I hope I'll recover enough to watch Smackdown later.
The part that really got me was the 10-bell salute. I know it sounds kinda corny, but it's almost as if he wouldn't officially be dead until the 10th ring, and if they stop before then, he'll still be alive. The shot of Benoit during it was especially sad.
The ten-bell salute got to me too. I think it is what you said-it's an official recognition of his death, and to see everyone he knew and worked with out there, in the face of what had happened....just broke my heart.
