Benoit goes over Trip? I'm shocked.
Any explanation on how they knew Trip was in the Kane bracket before any of the other matches started? Since who was wrestling whom was unknown until match time, how did they know brackets for Round 2 prior to match time? If they had a sense of humor, they would put Kane/Edge in the same bracket, thus the You Screwed Matt chant could be focused on both sides of the match. Michaels/Benoit makes most sense for a finals, Edge/Benoit could be good, don't let Kane anywhere near the finals.
Finally, a good purpose for MasterLock time. It gave the ability to flip to the last minute of Mavericks/Rockets without worrying about missing anything.

An excellent, match oriented Raw.

Shelton Benjamin is now the undisputed man on Raw. The nip up spot, the sell of the Sweet Chin Music, just that excellent match, my lord, what else can this man do.

EDIT: Oh yes, with the continued use of Christian and Ric Flair/HHH, anyone feeling a Christian v Evolution feud/rivalry before the draft if he gets moved?

Tuned in too late to see if they gave a picture tribute to Candido....This would've been the perfect time to elevate Christian- have him go through the field by cheating/unlucky means, and get to the finals. Of course, the post-match activities have to do with Tomko. Unbelievable....Great payoff to the loss- listening to Flair "rap"....Interesting Hassan segment. I hope they're not leading up to a Daivari turn....

Viscera and Simon Dean in the same segment? It's like they're not even trying....Nope, there's the Candido graphic. Strange placement....Great Benjamin/HBK match....Hmmm- hints that Edge could be drafted to Smackdown?....Good Edge/Jericho match, too. I thought Shelton would come down and help Y2J win after that speech backstage. Man, everyone I want to win in this tourney is losing tonight. I expect that to continue, with Triple H in the next match. If Bischoff is a heel, he'll prolly give Triple H the hometown Boston Brawler as his opponent....

I admit, I got some enjoyment out of the Masters segment- if only because JR and King kept calling the guy "Tubby"....Wow, I was wrong. Beautiful sight with Batista pulling the rope away. The match itself was decent, too.

They gave the Candido picture tribute before a break about half an hour in. Overall a poor Raw besides HBK/Benjamin and ME. We've just seen everything else before. But HBK/Benjamin was awesome, im still jogging my head over HHH losin.

- I know that the WWE gave Randy Orton the 'Blue Chipper' tag and John Cena is holding the strap on Smackdown, but Shelton Benjamin is going to go farther than either of them if given the chance. He's not quite ready for that other level yet, but when he is he's going to bring the house down.

- Edge is really drawing little to no heat right now. Simon Dean and Big Vis get more pop out of the crowd than he did tonight. A really weak match with him and Jericho as the two don't pair off real well. Jericho has now talked up the IC Title and the World Title and the chance to regain them and lost both in 24 hours. It will be interesting to see where they take him from here.

- Benoit may have done one of the best concussion sells I've seen. I love the way carries over injuries from one match to the next and it's not just when he thinks of it like a Shawn Michaels. Benoit just comes to the ring already beaten up, I'm sure a lot of that may be legit too. He'd really be the smart pick to take the tourney and carry Batista to a good sound/brutal match.

-This wasn't the greatest Raw, but I'll take these episodes with lots of actual "Wrestling" than the drama filled blab fests that we get more and more these days.

Pretty enjoyable show considering that they have close to 2 months before the RAW brand is on PPV again. As stated in the earlier threads, it was good to see some actual "rasslin" tonight.

Shelton Benjamin ... what can I say that hasn't been said already? And it didn't hurt that he was in there with Shawn Michaels either.

Interesting little turn in the Hassan/Davari camp. Could this be the beginning of Davari on Smackdown?

Mega-shocked that Trips tapped. I was certain that the tourney final would be Trips vs. HBK.

Didn't really dig the whole Batista/Christy thing ... I thought that role was reserved for Orton.

So is Viscera a face now? He just doesn't seem like face material.

- Shelton Benjamin. 'Nuff said.

- When Christian stood up to Kane in the beginning of the match and talking smack, was he consequently having a seizure while doing so? Kane had that "Dude, WTF is wrong with you?" look before they locked up.

- Chris Benoit did one of the creepiest concussion sells I've EVER seen.

- Was it me or did the WWE production crew oh-so-carefully turned the volume down on the Matt Hardy chants whenever Lita or Edge were present?

- BTW, does anyone else sense a Kane/Edge final with Lita turning heel to join up with Edge?

- And where's Gene Snitsky?

If they're going to have Kane go full heel (which they may not even want, I don't know) they could have him win and then lose to Batista, but Batista has beat him already several times...even going back to when Kane was wearing that stupid half-mask, so there's no interest there.

Kawshen might be onto something about that Lita turning on Kane to go with Edge though and helping him win. If they're going to keep getting the Matt chants they may as well put their fake-but-real-but-fake version of it on TV. Don't know why they'd have Edge win the tournament since he already has a title match secured, but dumber things have happened.

I'd prefer to see Benoit vs. Batista out of the matches possible since it would be something a little different and probably be a good match. I only remember one previous match with them with Batista winning clean, but I don't think that would hurt it that much.

And I'm still not totally convinced HHH is out of the title picture for the month, there's nothing that prevents them from having Benoit (or whoever wins the tournament) lose his shot to HHH before the PPV. Other than the desire not to annoy a lot of fans.

At first, I was upset that Shelton lost but reading all the feedback from his match with Shawn tonight, I think this loss may do more good than bad for Shetlon. Especially after the match when Shawn gave him his nod of approval. But Damn, Shelton is the man to push now. He has the God Given Ability to put on 5 star matches; his athleticism mirrors that of a young Shawn Michales and surpases that athleticsim easily; his matches 9 out of 10 times on the house show circuit and on raw or ppv are usually the match of the night. Give him some more time on the mic and you will have your next big draw, something I have been saying since his debuet on Smackdown as part of Team Angle and while he was down in OVW.

Hey, if it means Daivari wrestling cruiserweights and finishing 'em off w/ the Magic Carpet Ride, I'm all for it...right, The Cubs Fan?

And considering Edge's paranoid heel character, I like how they put him in the world title tourney and dangled the "if-you-get-drafted-by-SmackDown!-the-world (read: RAW)-title-shot-you-won-at-'Maina-means-squat" bit. That'll keep him nice and sane. :-)

Whoever wins the tournament won't have to lose the title shot to HHH before the PPV because their title shot will probably be on a Raw several weeks before the next Raw PPV. I'm thinking Edge might win the tourney and have his title shot ruined by interference from HHH going after Batista and maybe Benoit or someone else going after Edge.

I thought the tournament matches were great, other than Kane vs. Christian, which wasn't bad. Shelton Benjamin and Shawn Michaels worked well together and I think they did a good job of showing some similarities between the 2 of them during the match.

HHH and Chris Benoit have always had a good chemistry, going back to Benoit's first match in the WWF on Smackdown to the feud they had while HHH was in between face and heel during the HHH-Stephanie-Angle triangle storyline to the matches they had last year for the World Championship and the matches they've had since. Nice touch having Batista there to pull the rope back so HHH couldn't grab it to break the Sharpshooter and then having Batista laugh right in HHH's face while he's forced to tap out.

Nice RAW tonight. When I heard Shelton Benjamin's music play, I stopped writing on the computer... but when I heard HBK's music, I found a comfortable lounge chair, knowing I was in for one hell of a match. And it was, holy smokes. Obviously the crowd was rooting for Michaels, but I think the better move would have been to give the match to Shelton.

Shelton, Jericho and Christian lost, making me wonder, "Where do they go from here?" Christian's loss is perhaps hardest to understand-- sure, he lost to Kane, and sure, Christian always loses, but WWE's been acknowledging Christian's newfound popularity for the past few weeks, so it's odd to see him bow out in the first round. Unless they really are sending him to SmackDown in what would be the worst-kept secret ever.

Or they could do Christian vs. Triple H, but before they did that they'd have to turn Christian full-blown face, I think. And a Christian face-turn would mean altering his personality, and getting rid of Tomko's interference, so I don't know how they'd pull that off.

Shelton, at least, still has the Intercontinental Title to defend, and some astonishing matches to continue to put on-- I don't doubt that if they continue to use him correctly, he could win the World Heavyweight Championship within a year's time, and everybody would love it. (Hey, here's a thought-- Triple H vs. Shelton for the World Title at WrestleMania XXII).

But Chris Jericho's continuing to have trouble winning "the big one", as Stephanie once accused him of shortly before he won the WCW World Title from The Rock. What the heck was the last high-profile match that Y2J won, anyway?

I'll try and be the first to say something positive about Chris Masters. Here goes-- he's the Best Bathroom Segment in WWE! For those who need to use the restroom, but don't want to risk missing a cool new commercial, Masters provides your relief. Thanks, Chris!

Also, by trotting him out there for five-minute "Masterlock Challenge" segments, WWE's at least ensuring that he doesn't break anybody else's nose the way he did to Steven Richards. I figure if WWE needs to use him on RAW, they're at least using him in a way in which he can cause the least amount of damage.

Chris Benoit over Triple H, huh? I'm astonished. I was amazed (and continue to be) that he defeated Trips at WrestleMania XX, but I fully expected Triple H to get at least to the finals of the Gold Rush tournament, and instead he got bounced in the first round. Wow.

So there are these two guys, and one says to the other, "What's the worst month of Triple H's life?" Second guy responds, "The month after WrestleMania." I swear, though, between this year and last, I think Trips uses the March-to-May period to fulfill his annual quota of losses before hogging the World Title scene the rest of the year.

I really dug that part and I'm thinking maybe that interview is telling us more than we realized. When the poster for the next ppv came out I mentioned that maybe Triple H vs. Batista III in the Cell isn't a title match but maybe Edge gets the title and Triple H/Batista is just a grudge match. To me it seems like they've set the table to do that.

- Edge's comments about wanting to win the tournament because he knows nobody can beat him twice makes me think he WILL win the tournament and then have two title shots
- the comment about how Edge could get drafted might make him paranoid and want to use his two title shots quickly, like maybe the same night? He could wrestle Batista, it could be a long match then in the end he gets a chair or something and just beats the crap out of him, DQ (or maybe he gets Triple H to give Batista a few sledgehammer shots). Then, oh wait, I have ANOTHER title shot, and I want it NOW. He pins Batista.
- Lita possibly turning on Kane and joining Edge. If Edge and Lita join forces then the screwing of Matt outside of the ring and the screwing of Batista in the ring could get Edge some major heel heat
- With the title on Edge, Triple H and Batista are free to have their grudge match because of Batista causing Triple H his match against Benoit
- All the remaining top faces (HBK, Jericho, Benoit) have recent history with Edge, any of them, or all of them could be Edge's World Title opponent. And if it is all of them in a four way, it would add to Edge's paranoia that he isn't be treated fairly. Or how about this scenario? Heel Edge vs. Face Christian.

Well, HHH/Batista and HHH/Batista II haven't exactly torn the houses down at the two PPVs. I only saw their WM21 bout, but it was fairly by-the-numbers. Maybe the WWE bigwigs finally figured that running the same damn match in the main event three shows in a row isn't exactly going to make everyone rich.

Even if they do wind up switching in HHH as the PPV opponant at the last minute, I thought Benoit's swerve win last night was really a nice touch. Nobody expected it, and it was nice to see HHH not just plow through the potential opposition to the number one contender spot.

You either accept the poster as legit or not. If you do it means HITC for the title because Batista is pictured on the poster with it over his shoulder. That says just as much as anything else there. If the WWE had any second thoughts about this then they could have easily slapped a pic of Dave without the belt on the poster and then make up their minds afterward.

Anyone who thinks this tourney is gonna end with a title switch is kidding themselves. It's filler until the next ppv. It should be entertaining and provide for good matches (as it has already) but I think those are the payoffs in and of themselves... and maybe, maybe Lita joining with Edge.

From what I was able to watch, this was a good RAW. I LOVED the main event, as I thought for sure that HHH Was going over. Batista had me rolling my eyes initially as he was really no-selling his taped-up arm with the clotheslines, back body drop, and spinebuster. But what he did to Trips at the end more than made up for it. I was laughing my arse off at his facial expressions, and the "pulling the rope away from Trips" bit was AWESOME. Just nice to finally see him look human lately.

The nice thing about RAW last night was that it left a lot of open questions for next week (i.e. Davari/Hassan break-up? Lita and Kane are maybe heels? What will HHH do now?). It has been a loooooooooong time since I actually wondered what would happen the next week on RAW and it is a welcome change.

I was thinking last night that, even though Triple H lost, he would still advance in the tourney because Benoit "couldn't" because of the head injuries.

Overall, I mean, I liked the show, even though I only saw the second half. I came in right at the end of the HBK-Shelton match, and enjoyed what I saw there.

I loved how Batista pulled the rope back when HHH wanted to grab it. I loved how he was mocking HHH right in front of his face and there was nothing he could do about.

Good stuff. Me likey.

Three thoughts.

-Did anyone think they're teasing Christian taking Batista's place in Evolution? I can easily see a scenario in which Christian, fed up with losing the "big matches," desperately goes to Flair for guidance.

-Benoit's win over Helmsley was really fun to watch, but it left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. I can see HHH making a claim that he lost unfairly and thus deserves another shot at winning the tournament. Kind of like a Big Show with the photographic evidence that his feet touched the ground after The Rock in the Royal Rumble kind of thing.

-To the person who said maybe this means Daivari is moving to SmackDown!... I really hope not. All the good smaller wrestlers who get sent to SmackDown! end up getting wasted on the pointless Cruiserweight title; sure, I'd love to see a match between Paul London and (maybe even an English-speaking) Daivari, but I like him too much (from what I've seen of him) to wish that on him. I would assume, rather, that they're building towards a Daivari-Hassan feud; even Lawler and Ross put on the sympathy voices for Daivari. It even looked, from the way that they had Daivari limping after Hassan, that they could go with an awful brainwashing angle of some sort... we find out Daivari really loves America or something. I mean, it'd be awful, but really, how else can you take a guy from "angry arab terrorist who doesn't speak English" to "guy the crowd could cheer for"?
