Regarding the Jericho elimination: The way I saw things, Chris hadn't been quite "right" through a goodly part of the match. Might have been around the "skin the cat" move, he might have whacked his jaw or head or something. From sometime around then he seemed OK, but not really fine. He was getting his job done & hitting all the spots & eliminations that he needed to, & was turning it up when he was "featured". But it seemed like when the focus wasn't on him, he was trying to take it easy. (Y'know, not in the being lazy way, but in the saving myself for what I need to get done way.) I think he went out exactly when he was supposed to. Yeah, the over the top was a little hesitant, but my theory would be that Batista just didn't want to fling him too hard at that point (especially having just delivered a pretty big clothesline), & that Chris was running a little low on energy to do it all himself. I saw a ref single arm (as in he's OK) but not an X. IIRC he hung out on the floor there for a little while, got collected, & then got backstage without incident.

Actually the word "uppity" in the preceeding sentence got the first "ooh" reaction, & poised us for the subsequent "you people"...

Y'all were on commercial while we got his entrance & striptease. :-) I personally tend to prefer more muscle, but he is definitely a cutie! (Not the same style of adorable as Spanky, but definitely his own swanky-adorable.)

Few notes.

1/ Someone somewhere in this thread said winning the battle royal makes Kane look "strong"? How is winning only because of Shawn Michaels a sign of strength. Then again, the Champ couldn't beat Michaels one-on-one a couple weeks ago, so maybe it doesn't really matter how they look.

2/ I won't whine about the Orton being a racist stuff because at least Orton's a heel. And besides, I already hate Orton as it is, this just makes it easier. That aside, Orton/Shelton lacks one thing. A single participant who can carry the microphone end of it. It has someone who can work in the ring, Shelton will carry that portion. But these promos are really going suck.

3/ Rock is Christ. He really is the man. Not that this is news, but it's still worth mentioning.

4/ Good GOD Triple H is fat. Does he even work out at all anymore. Flair should start calling him the "Breast in the Business today."

I'd tell you to kiss my ass, but I don't want to get it infected.

With the Orton/Benjammin promo, I couldnt help but think to myself, "this is what the Heavyweight title promo segments will look like within 2 or 3 years."

I didn't even see the whole "racist" thing anyway. I ust saw Orton talking about everybody not in Evolution, and especially those who try to challenge for his title. Remember, when Edge challenged him in a promo a little while ago, Orton also refused saying Edge wasn't even worth his time. This is the same sentiment, and while I think it could have been more explicitly defined, it certainly has nothing to do with a racist angle.

If you ask me, the real winner of the battle royal was Shelton Benjamin. He was the second to last man eliminated, the last face eliminated, and he looked damn strong the whole time. He was almost continuously double-teamed in the match, and he kept fighting back. Also, that rope-running cross-body block should make it's way into his regular arsenal, because it was awesome.

I think you're the only one, considering the collective, uncomfortable OOOOOOOOH that erupted from the crowd. But maybe Those People were just being Uppity.

I don't like the race angle just because I though the promo was going well until then. I liked Orton putting Evolution over as a group because it makes his eventual betrayal more shocking. Then when Shelton came out, we had the classic "you're not worthy of a title shot." It was well within Orton's personna.

I don't necessarily have a problem with this angle or the way it was presented, because, in a way, what this is doing is portraying Randy Orton as someone who is much too Randy Orton-esque to even acknowledge his opponents. How they operate, what drives them, etc. So he has zero knowledge to go on about Shelton Benjamin, except, for example, his skin color. So he makes some asshole remarks about that, and he's on his way.

To be honest, and I'm not saying the audience holds this view, but we don't really have much to go on with Shelton Benjamin, either. He's athletic, young, and has a definite swagger to his confidence. BUT THAT'S IT.

So I'll hold out hope that as the storyline progresses, so too does the character of Benjamin. And if done well (as Raw seems to be doing of late), then it will be a fun ride.

Yes, but before that happened, Kane single-handedly beat the shit out all four members of Evolution, Edge, Chris Jericho *and* Shelton Benjamin in rapid sucession.

You say Kane beat all 4 memebers of Evolution in rapid success? Because from what i saw, they made batista look stronger than kane(reversed the chokeslam into a spinebuster that had kane on the ground for a long time).

Good. Kane has a monster-like image which is not going away any time soon. Batista is still developing his. There's no reason why Kane should have bested Batista at that point. The Kane/Batista confrontation was very well played. When those two finally meet up in an official match, the heat will be insane.

BTW, any members of the "Poor Dinsmore is stuck with this god awful gimmick" club ready to step foward and eat crow?

When Poochie/HHH isn't on screen, everyone else should ask, "Hey? Where's Poochie/HHH?"
That's really creative. Have you ever thought about going into recapping?

Wow, praise from CRZ! I'm blushing here!

Zed was calling Nash "Poochie" back in the day. He was just pointing that out without, you know, just saying that.

EDIT: The 1998 Year In Quotes lists this excerpt from the 12/7/98 Nitro, but I can't find it in that recap anywhere, so the Year In Quotes might have the wrong show:

Let Us Take You Back to Moments Ago. Nash is annoyed, Taylor says there's a match tonight, Nash guarantees the match won't happen and Goldberg better stay focused on him. Goldberg says that not a second goes by that he doesn't DREAM of knocking his ass to the mat. Hey, he said "ass" again! Remember Homer's idea to make Itchy & Scratchy better? "When Poochie isn't on the screen, the other characters should be sad, look around, and say 'Where's Poochie?'" KEVIN NASH IS POOCHIE!

So you're about five-and-a-half years late with the Poochie reference.

But in a different place and time. Both guys have had a alot of development since then, and it's really not fair to compare that past encounter to what the same matchup would be like in the near future with the proper buildup.

I would guess that the heat will not, in fact, be anything approaching insane. Because instead of a brilliantly built-to spot in a battle royal, they'll actually have to work a match. Much like this past December, when Goldberg and Kane blew the roof off when they were kept apart in a six-man tag and then finally collided, but couldn't maintain the same level of excitement when they had to have an entire match.

And I'm not saying that Batista vs. Kane in the battle royal wasn't great because it totally was.

I tried to watch this while treadmilling last night, but an old lady beat me to the exercise room and she had the TV set to some show where doctors perform surgery on newborn babies. I saw lots of internal baby bits that I didn't need to see.
