Daniel Bryan says he is back and is entering the Royal Rumble. They teased real hard that this was a retirement speech, which made you think otherwise then Bryan got out there and it looked like it actually might be a retirement speech, so that was enjoyable and good news.

Cesaro got mic time and blew his promo. Ryback got a bunch of time and cut an awkward promo. Cesaro will never live his down while Ryback's will be spliced into something that makes sense. Why couldn't CM Punk talk shit about Cesaro instead of Ryback so he would get the vindictive push?

Edge and Christian were here and believe it or not the wrestling world they knew passed them by. Edge now has to live with the fact that he is so helpless that he caused the return of The Authority. Cena came out to aid his friend (longtime nemesis), but to no avail. The whole hostage situation was not smooth, but they probably never are. In the end Rollins gets his way and goes to break Edge anyways. Cena does save that, but gets beaten down and The Authority come out and the biggest match in the history of the company doesn't seem as big. At least Rollins came through for the gang, no way Orton pulls that off.

I liked most of this RAW. Reigns-Rollins was good, Rusev-Ziggler was good yet they more or less have the same finish so why do them. Three hours is still too long even for good shows and there is a lot of time to space out, but Bryan is back so maybe things can get back on track.

Yo Roman. It's over, pal.

Dang what a superstar Daniel Bryan is. Not to harp on the Bryan/Roman thing we've been going on and on about since July (or April), but we may as well since it's all finally coming to a head, much more of one than I would've expected. Talk about a dichotomy in the interviews they gave and the reactions they got. Bryan might be the best promo in the biz since Punk left. With this and all the important stuff he had to sink his teeth into for the Mania build-up, he's knocked out of the park. It's about conviction.

That good -- great -- news was enough to offset the groaner ending. In the most important match of all time, Sting and Dolph Ziggler changed the course of WWE history ... for six whole weeks. Then it was just the same again. That said, with Bryan, Orton, and Sting all coming back, I guess it makes sense to get the main antagonists to all of them in a position to go against them.

LOL the Ascension. LOL.

Cesaro's promo was a great start! With a sad finish. Go figure, everyone agreed with what he said and cheered him. I thought BNB might be upset about Ziggler having the IC title he never lost, but he does have good face potential.

Usos/Mizos was really strong. Strange they'd put the belts back on Oos and then bring in the Ascension as, uh, faces or whatever that was. Could hope be held out for an Usos vs. Cesaro & Kidd program. Maybe Cesaro and Kidd can lose to the Usos at Wrestlemania, then Cesaro can turn face on Kidd and win the Andre battle royal!

Ziggler getting protected from losing to Rusev: so weird.

Sad that Christian's terminal illness has finally been made official. RIP Christian.

A year ago this week Bryan joined the Wyatts. Things can change in a hurry.

"It was the best of times. It was the BLURST of times? You stupid monkey!"

Surely, there's no way to ruin a total feel-good announcement like Daniel Bryan announcing that his career will continue and that he'll be coming back at the Rumble, right? What kind of turd could possibly sour THAT punch bowl?

Oh. Hi, Hunter. Hi, Stephanie. Why, yes, we probably should have expected you to be back before the end of the year. Silly us.

This is it, right? That ending right there is the ultimate example of this company being creatively bankrupt, isn't it? It's an "A" for execution, because Rollins pulled that segment off like a champ, but the end result gets a total "F" for going back to the Same Old Shit as always.

Ok, so rather than belabor how that ending completely ruined the show for me, I'd rather look ahead to the Rumble. Bryan not coming in as the conquering surprise entrant has me convinced that he's not winning and that he'll probably pick up right back where he left off with Kane. I will give them credit for this, though. This Rumble looked like the ultimate foregone conclusion with Reigns and 29 other jokers taking up space. At the very least, it's slightly less of a foregone conclusion and Bryan's addition at least makes this match more interesting. So kudos there, I guess.

Welcome to 2015, where I'm sure next week's first Raw of 2015 will pick up exactly as it did with the first Raw of 2014: with Triple H blathering on for 20 minutes to open the show.

Keep reaching for that brass ring, everyone! Especially you, Cesaro!

I think bringing the Authority back totally encapsulates why WWE's PPV business fell so consistently for so many years and why their network subscriber numbers are so shitty. There is no such thing as an honoured stipulation. I think we all figured they needed to bring back Triple H to set up the match with Sting, but it would have been five hundred and sixty four million times better and more compelling to have Sting be the one to demand it (in like February) after a series of mind games conducted over a couple months. Remember how late they waited to finally have Taker agree to fight Kane in '98? That would have given them episodic, tense programming to build six or eight weeks of television around. It wouldn't have felt like repetitive and shopworn and stale. It would have made so much sense. But instead of that we're going to get 8 weeks of Hunter and Steph promos opening RAW to "get heat on the heels". And we're still going to be seeing corrupt authority figures like it's 1997.

Mid-card stuff...Usos match was good. Debuting the Acension against a guy no one wants to debut was stupid. Ryback's promo was good for Ryback. Cesaro's was bad for anyone. Dean/Bray needs to end.

I cannot fathom a period in my lifetime of watching WWE where they had this much trouble just being fundamentally competent. I'm averaging 4 segments of RAW per week that I actually sit through. Wonder if they can wear me down to 2.

Went to LSU basketball game, started DVR around 8:20 central, was caught up to live for Daniel Bryan's announcement.

I will go ahead and predict that Daniel Bryan and Roman Reigns get to be the #1 & #2 entries in the rumble. It's best for business.

Glad they got the Ryback story out there because its a good one, but I think it would have been better via a multiple week set of vignettes/interviews like they did with Mankind/Foley. Way too much story there to process live.

Not a fan of Seth saying he would kill Edge. Not in a I hope that heel gets his ass kicked way. Seems there's a reason they don't use that word in WWE.

The guy who some thought would be the forgotten member of the Shield is consistently delivering. Rollins is a 100% star, and is carrying segments.

Ryback shows some great personality, I'm glad they gave him a chance to get some mic time. I was going to say the same about Cesaro, but man.....he's probably going to catch some heat about flubbing his promo. And saying his theme music is terrible.

Daniel Bryan obviously is great news. But there was a stealth health thing that came up in the show; Lawler referenced that both Edge AND Christian are retired now.

So are we to take it that they're switching back to Bryan for this year? Because please God let this be true.

Why do they need to switch back? Can't both be front and centre? That's been one of the criticisms.. not building up new people.

Loved Edge and Christian. I can't believe that Edge retired back in 2011, it doesn't seem that long ago (Was Edge wearing a Sami Zayn shirt all night? That's pretty awesome).

Loved seeing Daniel Bryan, even though he scared the living daylights out of me.

I really love the Bellas but NXT has pretty much spoiled me and I wish there were more people in the division (or longer matches or something).

I can see why the Authority is back because without them, there's really no conflict (and you can see it in the shows). They need that "evil" to balance the "good" in basic storytelling.

I hope Brock and Paul Heyman go away for good soon, ugh, and Cesaro is still boring. :\

Kudos to Rollins for the slimiest, heeliest main event promo work I've seen from him yet. His obnoxious "JOHHNNN"s, everything he did with his foot hovering over Edge, was reaching Heel Punk levels of work.

Was Cesaro's promo a "dud" solely because he said 4 when he meant 3?

I'm pretty sure the Ascension are supposed to be heels - note that they only fought Mizdow, I don't think they even touched the Miz.

Only one of them can win the Rumble and then the belt at WrestleMania. If that's still going to be the clearly-stuttering Reigns instead of Bryan, announcing the latter's participation in the Rumble last night was them essentially putting a gun to the head of their WrestleMania build-up.

I really hope they change course and go with Bryan/Lesnar at WrestleMania. But, I don't know if Bryan can take the beating that'd be required for the story in that match to really work.

If they do and he wins, down the road they can have Reigns beat him since Bryan will be the one who beat the one in 21 and 1.

Next week during the insufferable 20 minute Authority promo John Cena will come out and have footage that his fingers were crossed, and therefore he didn't really bring The Authority back.

Ah, this again. It's not the job of the people putting on the show to make it good, it's the job of the audience to stop watching if they don't like it. But it's not just a few people posting on this board; all key performance indicators are down, TV ratings are soft, dead crowds, subscriber numbers way below expectactions, stock price is at one of its lowest points, stars of all levels have never been more eager to step away...So, it is them. Actually, empirically them.

So the corrupt authority figure trope is the only way wrestling can ever be presented? All you need are some heels who are over and remotely competent booking. The last few weeks sucked because three of the top five stars were all gone (Orton, Bryan, Reigns).

If they do change course seems like it'll just be because they'd rather have Rollins cash-in on Bryan than Roman. With the Authority around won't that make Rollins in the Orton role...with Bryan in the Bryan role?

A LOT of talking tonight with two solo self-promoting promos (Bryan and Ryback) and one seemingly set up to boost an opponent.

Cesaro is in full pre-Survivor Series Ziggler mode, losing with attitude (fruitless aggression?), despite dusting off the Big Swing and wisely segueing into a submission hold with it. Barrett, however, comes out looking 15 pounds lighter and JACKED, using DDP's old catchphrase, and has a brilliant visual cue for his finisher (reversing the elbow pad).

Bryan conquered the crowd by suckering them into his Rumble announcement and leading the Yes chant. That's his best promo, especially when he's been lackluster on other big occasions.

And Ryback climbed out of a pit to salvage his promo. When he mentioned The Secret, I thought his gimmick was getting an unnecessary frill; instead he won the crowd over by doubling down on simplicity. His angle with Rusev now ditches the Cold War tension (wisely because Swagger burned through it) and goes for big guys killing each other. And his money line about eating obstacles as fuel so FEED ME MORE is from the brain of Paul Heyman, I will bet money.

Still not digging The Ascension, but I like the look.

The Ryback's promo was essentially the Cliff Notes version of his Talk Is Jericho appearance from earlier this month, which I just listened to this morning. He's *really* into The Secret, and the DVD version, and its sequel. And Luke Gallows of all people introduced him to it.

I can deal with all of The Ascensions new accouterments except the red triangle on the forehead. It looks so damn dumb.

Also kind of funny how people were worried that they were going to get rid of the Illuminati/Eye of Horus stuff when they came up but instead they doubled-down on it. That entrance video! Sheesh!

And the Chris Daniels eye design on the face too. They seem to be going for an anime version of Kratos from God of War.
