JOHN LAURENITIS came back! Only on the App! He awarded the Breakout Star of the Year Slammy to The Shield.

Santino Marella presented the final pre-show Slammy, Beard of the Year to Daniel Bryan, of course.

Only Big Show accepted his Slammy on the pre-show. Daniel Bryan did not accept because he is opening the show with a match and was preparing. The Shield did not accept their Slammys on the pre-show. They're too big for the pre-show. But they will present Double Cross of the Year Slammy on the live show.

The rest of the Slammys, the big ones like Superstar of the Year, Match of the Year, Diva of the Year, and Tag Team of the Year will be awarded on the live RAW with voting to be done exclusively on the App during the show.

I end with my first #Slammys Twitter joke of the night:

I won't be recapping RAW, but enjoy the Slammys!

It was over 3 hrs of boring with shitty voting by the idiots (not that many of the nominations themselves weren't shitty) but man that ending from when the crowd just dumped a Clev...Seattle Steamer on HHH & the booking til it went off the air should win half a dozen Slammy awards next year.

I'm pretty sure the votes are heavily manipulated if they fit a certain story direction Creative is engineering.

Man did I love the crowd shitting on The Bellas as Diva(s) of the year because they weren't AJ. The Bellas awkwardly trying to play the torrent of boos off as if they were being showered with adoration was fantastic. Total Divas is not helping them AT ALL. They will always be seen as "Raw Guest Host Arm Candy" no matter how hard they work in the ring, who they screw, and how much tv time they get.

Now that Brodus is obviously ending the Funkasaurus age can I finally get my solo Naomi push into The Diva's title against AJ? I've been wanting an AJ v. Naomi feud since that awesome match they had the infamous All-Divas season of NXT.

Speaking of group splits, I've never dreaded and also looked forward to a group splitting like The Shield. The cracks continue to form between Roman and Dean. Just hug it out you guys, somebody call Dr. Shelby quick!

So much good at the big hanging of the world titles thing at the end, Shawn's goofball Hbkizzle schtick where he is scared of everybody, the crowd going nuts for Bryan and shitting on HHH and Orton's promos, Orton going through his practiced speech pauses promo and letting the frustration from the crowd get him to show some emotion for the first time this entire year, Bryan's smiling beard, etc.

The Champion of Champions/Macmahon Helmsley story line doesn't just revolve Orton, Cena, and the Macmahon-Helmsleys. It involves Punk, Bryan, the Wyatts and The Shield. I believe the bigger payoff of this entire storyline still ends up with Daniel Bryan and or Cm Punk on top at Wrestlemania. If they could stretch out Rock v. Cena for two years they can put off officially crowning their new company face till WM next year.

Also great job avoiding heat from the crowd by including Ziggler, Bryan, and Punk in your promo about not being protected or getting proper pushes in WWE. I'm not hating at all, that beat Foley's cheap pops. Name Drop Transition Pop.

I believe in The Shield....

Yup. Did it tease two Wrestlemania matches too, neither of which involve Cena or Orton?

Amazing promo by Cena. The Bryan charity while he had to mostly stand there because he didn't originally have any lines was a little pandering, but credit to Cena for rolling with it as part of one of his best promos in ages, and even more credit to the crowd for taking over with what was best for business.

Quick recap of the ending segment in case you missed it (and in case no one else writes it)

- all the ex-world-WWE Champions on hand are in the ring
- HHH tries a ponderous boring speech about the importance of the title match. Crowd completely turns on segment and starts unprompted Daniel Bryan chants. Triple H tries to fight them, can not win. Half the people in the ring crack up. Triple H fumes (and it's unclear if was Triple H the character or Triple H the guy who helped write this skit who's angry), then buries the fans for being ugly Daniel Bryan family members. Triple H continues, only to get WHAT-ed.

- Orton and Cena are introduced. Orton has a good if obviously scripted speech about how he didn't have to try that hard because he was so good and he would've been good enough to beat everyone, including the older guys in their prime. Crowd turns on this and chants boring, which Orton tries to power thru.

- Cena, being Cena, takes advantage of the crowd reactions by improvising a bit with Daniel Bryan - he has Daniel introduce himself to the crowd as a guy who didn't have a hall of fame family member and had to work to get to the top. Cena says that, while Orton wasn't working hard and was always protected, not only did Cena make himself but he helped make others. He gave Dolph a shot "when no one wanted to give him a shot", he gave CM Punk a shot when he was threatening to leave the company, and he gave Daniel Bryan the one fair shot he's had at the WWE title - and Bryan beat Cena, so Cena is going to give him the first shot at the title. Cena's turned the crowd on his side.

(I'm pretty sure Daniel got a shot a CM Punk back in 2012, but let's not stress the details here.)

- Cena demands a handshake of Sunday Is The Most Important Match Ever and Orton accepts. They start to raise the belts up to the ceiling, Cena watched, and Orton cheapshots him. They roll on the mat.

- all the old guys bail, all the active guys separate them. (Christian is one of the guys who bailed.) CM Punk ends up in the middle, moves towards Orton, and Orton smacks Punk in the face while trying to get free.

- Punk gives the slow take reaction, then starts forearming Orton in the face.

- HHH pulls Punk back by his head and throws him down. HHH turns back to Orton and starts screaming at him for starting this.

- Punk, of course, can not let this be and gets up with an angry expression on his face. Stephanie yells a warning from across the ring, but HHH never hears it. Punk turns HHH around and forearms him in the face - and HBK superkicks Punk from out of nowhere! HBK is defending his friend again.

- HBK stands over Punk, forgetting who he screwed over last time he defended HHH. Bryan, in the foreground of the shot, gets ready and nails HBK with the jumping knee strike as he turns around. Crowd explodes.

- Stephanie is horrified, and obviously in a bad spot. Orton grabs Daniel for the RKO, Bryan shoves Orton off - right into Stephanie, who falls onto her back. Everyone freaks and the fight stops.

- HHH jumps up and checks on Stephanie. Orton leans over to do the same - only for HHH to kick wham Pedigree him.

- Stephanie is helped to her feet by Cena and Kane (who had been holding back Cena), and the last 30 seconds of the show are Orton recovering on the mat while the foursome of Kane, John Cena, Triple H and Stephanie stand together and glower at Orton. They clearly want the last thing you see as a visual of Cena standing side by side with the Authority as a tease. Turn? Double turn? Just a strange visual that'll turn up in a video package five years ago and you won't be able to remember why it happened?

----------------------

There's a lot there - it was a lot more to write up than I thought - but all of the last sequence of events came off as big deal moments. There's a lot of directions they could go with it (or none at all), but the idea of Punk/Bryan vs HHH/HBK as a super WrestleMania tag teams interested me far more than any proxy battle for control of the company. That match would be really really good and they probably could do a good promo or five to build it up.

I'm thinking Orton is winning, because Cena promised that title shot and that's usually a sign he's not going to be able to make good on that promise. That last image was to make you think something more important than a title unification - the Cena heel turn - might be possible on Sunday but I just can't imagine it.

Word of mouth encouraged me to dig this out of my DVR and WOW, you guys weren't kidding about the final segment! There was a lot of great stuff to be found in there and all of it melded perfectly together. If it was indeed Hunter that helped write this segment, he deserves a pat on the back. This shows what he's capable of, outside of the self-aggrandizing promo, which was rightfully derided by the crowd.

This was a testament to Cena, who can take awkward moments and turn them towards his favor and also back on track. He handled this whole deal masterfully.

On the other end, this is yet another knock against Orton. This isn't the first time he's gotten flustered when the crowd didn't go the way he wanted them to and he just kept trying to power through his scripted message. And when yelling louder and louder didn't work, you could tell he was at a complete loss. I don't even know if the guy knows the meaning of the term "ad-lib," but he's clearly incapable of this, which is staggering, given how long he's been pushed as a main event player.

The final segment set up so many possibilities for down the road that I can't help but be satisfied. The dark horse for Wrestlemania now becomes The Indie Powers vs. DX, which is just as tantalizing an option as singles matches.

The final visage was wonderfully executed. There's no way they go with the double turn (just because Orton as top face would be DEATH), but that fleeting visual of Cena standing with The McMahon-Helmsley Regime has you thinking "Juuuuuuust maybe," and that's the sign of a very effective segment.

I just got back home from this. It was PHENOMENAL live. I'll be curious how it ended up being edited for TV because there was A LOT of continuous stuff happening for 4 hours. Didn't feel like being at the "TV show" at all as far as pacing went, and I have to say I won't ever give any grief to a crowd for struggling to keep its energy for an entire RAW.

(Note: IJ and Mrs. JJD went to buy stuff during Alberto Del Rio/Sin Cara Jr. II. Sorry, fellas. (™Sheamus))

But the ending...OH the ending. The Daniel Bryan chants got going when we noticed he was giggling about it. Cena's promo was GREAT. And all that stuff...Cena and Orton and Punk and HHH and HBK and Bryan and Orton Steph and HHH again. That was MAGIC. I can't wait to watch from the TV broadcast.

Did the pre-show app show Poor Zack Ryder™ getting beat in two minutes by Alexander Rusev? I'd never seen the guy but he could move for a big man.

Post-show:

- Everyone but John Cena leaves the ring. Randy Orton still suffering post-pedigree on the ring apron. Cena compliments our crowd as being really loud (and that was with a MAYBE 2/3-full KeyArena). Then, for some reason, the Wyatts leave the ring and run to the back. (Even Cena was like "WTF? Did I just see that?") And we get a maybe 10-minute Cena-Orton match that included Orton kicking out of the 5-knuckle shuffle (which I loved) and Orton hearing a "we want tables" chant, him looking under the ring for said tables, then turning to the crowd and blowing them off, which I loved. Eventually he was DQed for hitting Cena with a chair.

Orton eventually gets AAed (I think) and leaves the ring. Cena gets back on the mic and calls out Daniel Bryan just because. Bryan comes out to crazy cheers (again) and is about to get Cena in on a "Sea! Hawks!" chant when Booker T comes out. Cena looks at Bryan like "I have no idea what is going on." Booker T says he needs to see a Bryanaroonie and a Cenaroonie. Both Bryan and Cena are like WTF? Booker demonstrates, then Bryan gives it a pretty sad go, as does Cena. Then Booker calls out JOHN LAURINITIS for a People Power-roonie. Big Johnny comes out and flops around on the canvas a bit. Then Booker says we need a Prime Time Playersaroonie. Titus and Darren come down and do something while I tweet about the Big Johnny-roonie. (Sorry, PTPers.) Booker THEN calls out Stephanie McMahon for a Stepharoonie. Steph comes out, still selling the knock she took earlier, and actually does the BEST non-Booker spinaroonie of the group, in her power suit, no less.

Finally Booker T calls out CM Punk for a Best in the World-aroonie. CM Punk literally walks out in a hoddie and underwear. Not trunks. No boots or anything. Evidently he was just about to hit the shower. Booker takes Punk's hoodie and Punk - in his skivvies - does a super sad spinaroonie-looking thing like the goldfish at the end of the "Epic" video. Then everyone leaves and heads to the back (I think) EXCEPT CM Punk, who high fived a bunch of people around ringside. In his just underwear. Cult of Personality started as we hit the top of the stairs to leave.

(One small negative footnote: they played Booker T's/Harlem Heat's music THIS WHOLE TIME FROM WHEN BOOKER CAME OUT. Like for 20 minutes non-stop. Duh-nuh-nuhnuhnuh-NUH-nuh...duh-nuh-nuhnuhnuh-NUH-nuh-nuh. Over and frickin' over again.)

Now, someone just needs to tell me where to pick up my Slammy™ for Best Dad of 2013.

WWE only posted the scuffle on their official channel. But I found this video of the entire segment, chants and all (starts at 10:00): http://fastwweup.com/raw12913p5.html

Tangential:
Am I the only one that thinks the "what?" chant (annoying as it is) is a testament to the promo power/genius of Austin?

First I was thinking, since when is the "Superstar of the year"-Slammy buried in the mid-card? But hey, that ending - just wow! Probably one of the best segments ever. Very well done, and the crowd was the icing on the cake.

Daniel Bryan truly is the Superstar of the year. I hereby officially demand to see him as (reigning or new) WWE Champion of Champions in the main event of Wrestlemania 30. Yes! Yes! Yes!

So if we take the ME segment as a tacit admission that yes, Punk Vs. HHH and Bryan Vs. HBK are set for WrestleMania, then where does that leave the title? Cena holding it? Facing who?

Unless, of course, HHH does get the belt(s). Which would let them do their Punk Rumble win, then Punk with Vince Vs. HHH for the title AND the WWE in the main event, thus fulfilling Punk's final career goal of closing WM. Yeah, that seems to fit real nice.

I don't know what's to be said that hasn't already been said, but that was probably the best 20 or so minutes of television that the WWE has put out in at least a year, probably longer. Spectacular performance all around; the crowd just dumping all over HHH, Cena at the top of his promo game, Daniel Bryan with the shit-eatingest grin of all time, and booking that was clean and clever all the way through. Loved it.

I wonder how many people are going to have to go back and watch this? I couldn't get through the Slammy garbage just to see a main event promo, it would be nice if they could make that journey easier. Of course how was anyone to know that this was the main event promo that was going to be worth while.

I am not looking forward to a Shield breakup.

The highlight for me was Shawn winning Double Cross of the year. To me, he should win all the Slammies for that. Teasing either an Authority face turn or a Cena heel turn is interesting. Turning Cena and have him as the champion going into Mania would be electric. However, I don't see it happening. Smackdown will do what Smackdown does, tease some more if that is what they are going after and then at the PPV something major must happen.

Turn the Bellas already, no one cares about them except Johnny O. AJ is the most over female in awhile. If you are booking Mania 30. Cena vs Bryan, Taker vs Lesnar, Punk vs Orton. I have no desire to see HHH and HBK wrestle again. The biggest joke was HHH/Lesnar as a candidate for MOTY. That was the piss match at Wrestlemania. I don't trust either one of them to do the right thing either.

I totally got the Punk & Bryan vs. Hunter & HBK vibe from those closing minutes too. That whole last segment was amazing.

Also Corporate Kane quietly lurking in the background of all of it was way too amusing, look at him up there in that banner.

That was -- hands down -- Randy Orton's best promo. I don't think he was rattled as much as he was properly milking the crowd for negative reaction. If we got that guy on a regular basis, he WOULD be the star Cena said he should be.

However he loses Sunday, he can point to the people standing over him at the end of RAW and say the whole world was against him. He gets the biggest "Randy excuse" possible. That could lead to some interesting directions for a character. What do those voices in your head say to you now? One segment has made Orton -- RANDY ORTON -- the most interesting guy in this angle.

I'd be remiss to mention the part of Cena's promo where he compared Bryan to Orton. "Is your father a WWE Hall of Famer?" No.

The logic Cena applied to Bryan, that he wasn't born into a WWE Hall of Fame family and "liked" by the right people -- which tacitly makes him better or more deserving than Orton because he worked from nothing to get where he is in WWE -- is the same logic AJ used on Smackdown comparing herself to Nattie. Nattie was also born into a WWE Hall of Fame family and is in WWE despite glaring deficiencies. AJ by her own words was born "in poverty" and worked her way to be Divas Champion. The difference, of course, is Nattie isn't all that "liked" judging from the lack of opportunities she gets, Divas Title match at TLC excepted.

So if Bryan is a face and Orton is a heel by the logic that guy who works hard and is appreciated by the people for doing so > guy who was "born into WWE royalty" (as Nattie says she is), shouldn't AJ be seen as the same in relation to Nattie? In the eyes of many of the WWE Universe (who apparently don't vote on the App but can sure boo loudly), the answer is YES.

I saw some of the stadium in the build up to the NFL season. I'm watching Arkansas vs Texas A&M at it right now. That place is stunning the size of it. 100K plus for a football stadium, indoors. A Wrestlemania could seat 150k plus in there.
