The State of the WWE address turns out to be a big nothing, as the whole thing is interrupted by CM Punk. Punk slaps the shit out of Vince to set up our main event...CM Punk/Vince McMahon. Oh lord, it's an "If you want something done, do it yourself" deal, as Vince is going to try and draw ratings himself.

The actual match never gets started, but it's a big Punk beatdown before Vince escapes the GTS and go WILD on Punk with multiple mic shots and a kendo stick! It takes a Greco-Roman nutshot for Punk to finally get control until The Ryback makes the save. Punk tries to run until he runs into John Cena, so Punk escapes through the crowd. Vince gives Punk a choice: Cena or Ryback at HiaC and he must decide by next week or Vince chooses for him.

Hmm...WWE logic would dictate this leads to a three-way at HiaC. Putting Ryback into a PPV main event (and a CELL MATCH, no less!) is either stupidly brilliant or brilliantly stupid! I guess they need to try something...ANYTHING...to shake up the status quo.

I tuned in and out throughout the night, thanks to the Texans/Jets. Didn't catch much else, aside from...sigh...Larry King at halftime. Because of course this is what The E puts up against MNF halftime. Of course it is.

Take us home, WWE Creative!

The Bryan/Kane vs Dolph/Alberto tag match was just outstanding tag team wrestling. I don't remember the last time I just saw a good ole fashion wrestling match like this on Raw. Dolph and Alberto have no business with the tag team champions, but they just went old school and put on a great wrestling match.

Sheamus vs Barrett was pretty good. Sheamus is pretty fun to watch when he gets people he can work stiff with.

Fuck Vince McMahon.

... and I hope that fan Punk punched did something to have that coming. I found it strange that there was no security making me wonder if Punk ran the wrong way.

Remember when beating up your millionaire boss made you a hero? Instead, the millionaire boss installed himself as the biggest babyface in the company.

John Cena and The Ryback and the Bret Hart and Lex Luger of 2012.

Except Kaitlyn also wants to be Lex Luger 2012, new owner of the worst side human torture rack in the business.

Eve was magnificent working Kaitlyn's ankle. Like an Anderson! Viciously taking that wounded limb apart until Kaitlyn tapped out, and then still holding on well after the bell.

Team Hell No is the hottest act going. They're carrying pretty much all of the goodwill of this company. The arena was red hot for them.

nah, Punk picks Cena as the lesser of two evils because he's a one-armed man in an ass-caging contest.

Yeah it was. They've always has good clobbering chemistry. It was silly to use that match as a throwaway, even without a finish, considering the lack of heels lined up for Sheamus. There's Big Show, which will probably go on for the rest of the year. There's Dolph, who will eventually get it but he's already had a thousand matches with him that all ended the same way. And there's Orton as a potential Wrestlemania program. I guess if Ziggler gets the title and then feuds with Orton instead of Sheamus and loses it to him to set up Wrestlemania, then you're set.

The best part of their act (other than the matches) is when they stop yelling at each other and talk to one another like Kane and Danial Bryan.

I JUST finished watching the show on DVR, and am surprised I'm not seeing more about this online. It looked like Punk was being bothered by the guy behind him to his right. The guy directly behind him, slightly to Punks left, was some bald goof that was just staring straight ahead with his hands on his head. A la Ron Artest, it looked like Punk turned around and backhanded the WRONG GUY. Then he followed it up by absolutely creaming the guy in the face.

There's absolutely the possibility that he said something threatening or that he was kneeing Punk in his back or something, but jeez... Watching that exchange in slo-mo looks like Punk got the wrong guy.

This Raw had significantly less talking compared to last week's Raw, no complaints there.

I guess I've gotten use to Shaemus and ADR having the same match for months. Barrett and Shaemus have great chemistry in the ring. Is it too late to replace Big Show with Barrett?

Cena opens with another goofy joke promo. I was kinda interested in the Symbiote that seemed to be growing on his arm however.

I think Heath, The Last One Chosen McIntyre, and Mohammed Hassan 2.0 are forming the new J.O.B. Squad. If they end up flying to Hardcore Holly's house bugging him about how to get out of their loser rut then I'm in.

Team hell No should of been on Skeletor Now! rather than Miz. I loved the Tag Match between them and Ziggler/ADR. Could of used Ricardo on commentary again though.

Gawddamn JBL embarrassed Micheal Cole tonight. Almost as bad as Cole embarrassed himself.

Cole: Go climb another mountain.
JBL: That was easier than carrying you out here tonight!

Cole was stumbling all over the place, but he's been doing it since the 90's, no one calls him out like JBL. God Bless you JBL.

I think Ryback is definitely going to be in the cage. Cena is not going to be ready in time for HIAC. He gingerly threw Punk back in the ring in the main event and visibly hurt himself.

Wow, Deadspin wasted no time on this!

C.M. Punk Slugs Spectator on WWE Raw, But It Was Probably Worked

C.M. Punk has risen to become one of WWE's most prized assets by leveraging decent athleticism, quality mic skills, and an especially strong ability to work shoots. We're assuming that's what happened tonight, as Punk sledged a fan in the face during the closing seconds of tonight's episode of Raw, though this might be an instance of the boy crying wolf so many times we're assuming everything is a work.

Of course, legit shoots have been common of late on Raw, from idiots in the ring to Jerry Lawler's very unfortunate on-air heart attack. Too, you see a security guard immediately come up to the guy decked by Punk to see if he's still a threat—but he never appeared to be one in the first place. (His story would make for a hell of a Virgilbag entry.)

If the whole thing's legit, it's possible Punk thought the guy behind him was grabbing his arm (that would actually be the dude to Punk's right)—but if that's the case, it's on the booker for not taking the right precautions to send Punk to a secured part of the crowd. Admittedly, we don't really watch Raw because there's Monday Night Football and, now, MLB playoff baseball on TV. If you know more about this, chime in below.

I really don't think it's reasonable to assume this is a work, because there's absolutely no reason for this to be worked. Also, that was a noticeably distracted Vince in that moment.

Does Cena have a large tattoo on his arm, or was that some form of padding? His injured arm looks really disproportionate in comparison the other..

every time Cena does one of those bits where he jokes on whatever else is going on, it's so terrible. Consistently terrible. Reliably terrible. I couldn't tell if Cena remembered he was not a fan of Eve or if he just been generally behaving like he does.

The whole first half hour felt like they hadn't actually figured out what they were going to do that night and were stalling until they did. Explain the Brodus/Truth segment some other way.

Shocking news about Randy Orton, guy who appears on SmackDown every week, being on SmackDown next week.

AJ went from being all over the show to being in one short, nonsense bit. I know it was simply an excuse for CM Punk to mention the main event, but it didn't actually make any sense - CM Punk wanted the match, but paradoxically wanted to make sure AJ she should stop the match from happening?

Announcers were insufferable for large portions of the night. I know people love JBL, but I can't stand him spending half the show trying to zing Cole at the expense of whatever else was going on. He spent the other half of the night falling over himself to praise Vince. It was more accurate then half the facts he throws out, but it was more noxious going so overboard to scream about the 60+ CEO of the company as the toughest man in the world.

but Punk punching that guy probably matters more than any of this.

They're so scared of anything in pro-wrestling turning out to be a work and them looking stupid for "falling for it" that they have to say EVERYTHING is probably a work, just to cover their asses.

John Cena becoming self-aware that he was a character on a wrestling show and going meta is the worst thing that's happened to him this side of a notorious criminal forcing him to participate in 12 rounds of dangerous tasks in a sick game of elaborate revenge.

Ok, I just watched this promo for myself and this might take the cake for Most Insufferable John Cena Promo of the Year. If that was Gewirtz's last scripted promo, he went out with a bang. Oh, and alluding to CM Punk being the reason for the ratings decline ("If you're the Best in the World, what does it matter if the world doesn't want to watch?") is such a dickishly arrogant statement, given the fact that it's been The John Cena Show since the day Punk won the title.

And I can never un-see Antonio Cesaro's nipples. Thanks, dick.

Okay, I saw half of the show two weeks ago, didn't watch any of last week (was planning to catch up), but had to see what Vince was on about. Lucky I happened to channel flip at the half-hour, generally since the 3-hour shows I only look in at the top of the last two hours, and the main event. Credit where due for the promo.

Yeah, CM Punk.. Best in the World.. begging off from a senior citizen. Okay then. Bad enough they didn't let him get much of anything on H. Whatever, it's all a work.

I did laugh at WHATTAMANEUVER!!

Even keeping in mind Cena's Royal Rumble return, I don't see how that arm is ready in three weeks. You could see how ginger he was tonight, and there was the lefty handshake in the clip with Kelly & Strahan. Hell in a Cell is not the sort of gimmick match where you can work around an injury, unless you want to challenge HHH/Taker II(I) for the "least usage of the Cell gimmick ever" award.

I think you end up with a Triple Threat, only it's Punk-Ryback-McMahon. Unless they've already given up on drawing buys for B shows. If Vince is back to pop ratings, you figure he thinks he's the man to sell a Cena-less PPV.

Someone in the comments section on bleaherreport is claiming someone slapped Punk in the back of the head. If the guy is filing charges, this could be bad for Punk's title reign. Although Jericho punched a girl in the face for no reason and nothing came of it.

Jesus Vince is so old. I never want to see him in a "match" again. This is just grotesque. And invoking Lawler's heart attack? Yuck. That whole main event segment was just in poor taste and not fun to watch.

It's too bad the Divas division is complete crap, because the one person who isn't is the champion. Eve's insincere act is actually very well done, and she even used some nice psychology in her match tonight. But Layla's a horrible face, Kaitlyn, while attractive, lumbers around the ring aimlessly, Natalya and Beth have both been humiliated (and gone, in Beth's case). It's bad enough that I was hoping Kaitlyn's blonde attacker would be Michelle McCool and a heel turn for Layla. I never thought I'd miss friggin' Michelle McCool, but it's gotten that bad.

Still, the show was mostly pretty good. Long, entertaining matches all around. Barrett/Sheamus have great chemistry, the tag matches all varied from decent to very good. Damien Sandow and Antonio Cesaro are awesome rising star heels. Kand and Daniel Bryan continue to be funny and fantastic. My favorite part remains Bryan's utter lack of fear for Kane, who's been terrorizing guys Bryan's size for years. It really makes D-Bry look like a main eventer, even more than the title did, oddly enough.

My sincere hope for the Sheamus/Show feud is that Show wins at HitC, then gets cashed in on by Ziggler in 45 seconds or less in a callback to last year, and Show just goes completely psycho. I don't know if anything good would come of it, but I'd laugh and laugh and laugh.

That was the most transparent and shameless attempt to recapture Austin/McMahon. Did it work - Well, not on me, but I guess we'll find out. What did work on me were the matches this week. Good all around, and I particularly liked Barret/Sheamus, bullshit non-finish aside. I actually thought this was one of the best 3 hour RAWs.
