From Newsday:

The Yankees would receive the 41-year-old Johnson in the deal while sending pitcher Javier Vazquez and two minor-league prospects, catcher Dioner Navarro and third baseman Eric Duncan, to the Dodgers, according to an Arizona source. The Dodgers would send pitchers Brad Penny and Yhency Brazoban and outfielder/first baseman Shawn Green to Arizona to complete the deal.

Not a bad deal for all involved. Dodgers get younger and shed $24 million in Green/Penny. Diamondbacks get a younger #2/3 starter (albeit an injured one) in Penny. There must be some cash involved, because Arizona is actually taking on more salary, but nothing else they have done lately has made much financial sense...

I don't think that's much of a trade for the Dodgers at all. They've already lost Adrian Beltre, you never know what's going to happen with Milton Bradley, and now Shawn Green is out as well. Is Jeff Kent supposed to make up all that offense? Unless the Dodgers have another couple of moves to be made with their lineup they could have big problems this year.

Until Shawn Green waves his no-trade, this is not going to happen. And from the sounds of it, he does not want to leave LA.

This trade makes absolutely no sense for the Dodgers. Vazquez is not a significant upgrade over Penny considering that you had to dump Brazoban and Green to get him. And Navarro and Duncan and just that: prospects. That's three quality major-leaguers for another major leaguer and hope. You'd at least think they would try to pick up another established bat or at the very least dump Weaver while they were at it.

EDIT: ESPN is also reporting that the deal may be on the verge of collapse...

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. For the record, Penny has what's been described as a freak arm injury. If I dig up the ESPN article I'll post it, but maybe an LA W can get my back. I believe has a nerve problem that his doctors can't really diagnose beyond "it's a nerve problem in his arm." Vazquez, IMO, would be filthy in Chavez.

I would bet on Vazquez having a good season in LA. He had great stuff in Montreal, and if I had to guess I'd say it's more likely the NY pennant chase pressure broke him down rather than he just woke up one morning and forgot how to pitch. Having said that, he's going to have to be filthy and then some, since it appears the Dodgers are going to try and win all their games 1-0 this year.

Looks like Kaz Ishii will be included in the deal and sent to NY. Having never seen him pitch, can anyone give me an opinion on him? As this deal goes through, it makes the Yanks rotation:

Johnson
Mussina
Pavano
Brown
Wright

Is Ishii good enough to keep the Yanks looking to deal Brown, thus opening a spot for him?

He walks way too many people and if you take him out of Dodger Stadium there's a good chance he'll put up well over a 5+ ERA. He's not very good.

Still, good or not good, if the Dodgers are GIVING THE YANKEES MONEY to pay for Ishii's salary, they should not let this trade go through. Who needs money LESS than the Yankees?!

I saw that, and found it very odd that the Yankees were getting money, especially considering that they were going to offer Jonhson an extension at $16-$18 mil/per.

The Yankees were going to pay 6 million of Vazquez's salary. By including Ishii, they'll only have to pay 3 million. Why they don't word it like that I don't know.

Guess it doesn't matter HOW they word the deal now. I was wondering all along why everyone assumed this thing was a foregone conclusion even though it seemed to be taking ages to get finalized. I had a feeling something was up.

Dodgers GM says the deal is off the table as they are concerned Click Here (sports.yahoo.com) of course he adds he'll still listen if they can give him a better deal for the season coming up.

The deal really didn't make a lot of sense from the Dodgers' perspective.

They were giving up:

Shawn Green
Yhency Brazoban
Brad Penny
Kaz Ishii

for:

Javier Vazquez
Mike Koplove
Dioner Navarro
Eric Duncan

Two starting pitchers and a very good reliever, plus an expensive pseudo-slugger for two prospects and one failed Yankee starter and a reliever. That makes little sense from the Dodgers' side and I think they woke up over the weekend and smacked themselves on the forehead.

It never made sense, so the only way that this was going to work was if the Dodgers had contingent deals with other clubs. Apparently, Vazquez never wanted to pitch in LA, so the Dodgers might have had a deal to spin him off collapse, thus causing the Johnson deal to fall through,

There was word going around that Vazquez was going to refuse to report for a physical in LA which, while most likely just a ploy on his part to stall the deal, has to be a red flag when you're trading for a starting pitcher. It could also be that, since the deal was agreed do before the Dodgers lost Beltre, DePodesta did whatever he could to call the thing off. Either way, that trade would have been the death knell for the Dodgers '05 season, so lucky for them it didn't go through.

In my head, I hear somebody in their best Wayne Campbell voice yell:

"Trade on!" (nydailynews.com)

A lot of people don't realize what's really going on. They view life as a bunch of unconnected incidents and things. They don't realize that there's this, like, lattice of coincidence that lays on top of everything. Give you an example, show you what I mean: suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.

Well word out of the local bars here in Phoenix is that WHEN Johnson goes to the Yankees, we want Posada. With the way our D-Backs have been burning money this off season I wouldn't be too surprised to see a free agent catcher come our way. Maybe one of my beloved former Twins AJ. Didn't the Giants release him?

Nobody I know here wants Vazquez.

I cannot believe the Yankees will include Jorge Posada in this deal.

The Dbacks will most likely get Vazquez, some prospects and a small bag of money. That will be it.

Your right, but that won't stop a loyal follower for holding onto a dream. I just pray for the sake of my friends sanity that Glaus isn't damaged goods. As far as this trade goes has anyone heard if a third party is going to get involved again, or just the two teams?

Everything I've head is that the Yankees don't want to let what happened with LA happen again, so they're only going to deal directly with the Diamondbacks until the trade is finished.
