Thanks for a great season, Pick of the Week fans...see you next year at Planet Magic in Denmark, WI!
Randy Johnson is officialy an asshole.
The last time I checked, news photographers are allowed to take pictures of people on public f'n streets. But both Randy and some Yankees security sclhub have been bestowed with special powers to suspend freedom of the press whenever the Big Unit feels like it.
"Don't get in my face!" "I don't care who you are!" "Don't talk back to me!" "Get out of my face, or you'll see what I'm like!"
Video of said incident available on the above link. On behalf of photographers everywhere, I volunteer to punch him in the face.
Welcome to New York, indeed. Asshat.
Star wipe, and...we're out. Thrillin' ain't easy.

Evidently, he got into a verbal spat with the same photographer at his press conference today. This was within 20 minutes or so of claiming the incident was "water under the bridge."
Things could get fairly interesting in NYC pretty soon. Somehow, I don't see RJ becoming a media darling anytime soon.... or anytime at all, really.
A lot of people don't realize what's really going on. They view life as a bunch of unconnected incidents and things. They don't realize that there's this, like, lattice of coincidence that lays on top of everything. Give you an example, show you what I mean: suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.
Totally missing the boat here, guys. This guy is a New York writer/photographer/etc's dream. Maybe he hates your guts, won't talk to you, won't let you take his picture, etc....but he's giving you a story. Johnson giving the media a hard time is much more interesting than 'tall pitcher shows up for physical, later leaves'. There are reporters out there who will go up and ask a guy like the Unit a question just so he will tell him to shut up and leave him alone, because that becomes the story. The Yankees beat just got a whole lot more interesting.

Do you have a link? Because I can't find one and I have been listening to WFAN since I left work today and haven't heard a single word about this. I also can't find anything on ESPN, CBS or WFAN's website.
Randy just doesn't want his soul stolen and eaten by the magic devil box!
As a devout Yankees fan, I'm really none too thrilled about the Unit coming to NY. I'd really apreciate a younger, talented pitcher who doesn't have all the notches under his belt.
Hold nothing sacred and you'll never be dissapointed. Especially not this statement.

To be somewhat fair to Randy, the reporter he got into the problem with is also the son of the Red Sox radio play-by-play announcer. Damn, someone stole the stealing the soul line. And of course, if there was ever the doubt of why a Red Sox fan would read the www.nypost.com every day, the column comparing Randy Johnson to Ed Whitson is a further reminder. As always, it is wonderful to live in between the two places where baseball is religion 365 days a year.

I agree with Lexus that Johnson isn't really a hot move. I'm not worried about his considerable ego; Torre can handle that.
I'm worried that his shoulder will disintegrate on the mound. But I am morbidly looking forward to the annual Mets/Yanks in May classic and watching Unit put one in Pedro's ear. You know, for... uh... crowding the plate.

You had him Lexus & his name was Javier Vasquez. :-)
The problem was you guys gave up on him instead of actually helping him get back to where he was & probably still could be again...

You MAY be overreacting.
Perhaps...but when I see a dude who just got big, big money mess with a colleague of my profession, especially considering the public interest that's inherent in said profession, my blood boils like Grimis stranded in a blue state.
Hell, CRZ, how would you have felt back in the day if some rassler came and unplugged your computer in the middle of typing one of your recaps, because he wasn't happy with the mere fact that you were writing about him?
I reiterate: Big Unit = asshat.

Give me 18 wins and quality post season starts Randy, and you can piss on every photographer in the free world as far as I am concerned. (sorry Thrill, I dont make my living that way, so I dont feel so personal about it.)

There's a bit of a difference there. Generally if you're writing about someone, you're not right in their face. How long had the guy been there? How many shots did he have? Maybe, the Unit had just had enough shit for one day. That happens. You side with the photographer, because he's a colleague. If you were a major league player would you automatically side with Unit?

.
That's the best line I've seen today, thank you!
Though honestly I am not surprised. Sports people seem to frequently bite back at the NY media. And while I am all for freedom of the press, it is NY, and the scrutiny is far different there than elsewhere. But Randy Johnson wanted to go to NY so... I mean was he expecting anything less than them crawling up into his ass, and making themselves at home there?
Shame Randy, shame. Just grin and bear it, and count your money.

I've got many character flaws, humility isn't one.

Doesn't matter...as long as the guy isn't really harrassing you (which he wasn't, because Randy clearly was able to walk freely, and wasn't being hindered from getting where he wanted to go), there's no arbitrary numerical limit for pictures/video at which one's personal preferences trump freedom of the press.
(EDIT: Unless this abhorrent bill(b-roll.net) passes in the Virginia General Assembly. Are we all living in the novel 1984?)

Not an excuse for what could legally be considered assault. "I've had enough" is never an excuse for bad/illegal conduct.

God, I hope not. Principle should trump personal affiliation every time.
