By the way, who won the XFL Million Dollar Game(tm)? My brother and I couldn't remember.

That would be the LA Xtreme, led by YOUR current Pittsbutgh Steeler, Tommy Maddox.

He may have been "Tommy Touchdown" at UCLA but he was "Tommy Turnover" when he played for the Broncos. We couldn't wait to see him go. The Steelers would be better served with Randle El at QB than Maddox should Kordell ever get hurt.

A couple of items worth mentioning. "Touchdown Tommy" was Tommy Vardell of Stanford then Detroit & Cleveland. As for Evil Waldo comparing Mike Martz to Barry Switzer, give me a break. The Bootlegger's Boy is one of the all-time great college football coaches, top 5 winning percentage. He has also won a Super Bowl. Mike Martz is a clownish egomaniac who thinks he invented the forwrd pass. Martz is more of a Lindy Infante type.

My comparison between Switzer and Martz is thus:

While Switzer was a great college coach, he won his Super Bowl with the team assembled by Jimmy Johnson. I doubt that he was a great pro football coach because of the team that was assembled before he got there. Almost anyone could have coached the Cowboys to the Super Bowl with the team JJ assembled. When Switzer had to coach the Cowboys he had problems and was outcoached a lot in his last year.

I agree with your assessment of Martz. Martz has the team that Vermeil assembled and has yet to win with them. His ego cost the team the Super Bowl and lost the game on Sunday. When forced to coach, Martz makes a lot of bad decisions.

Lindy Infante may be a better comparison altough I don't think he was ever a head coach. I wanted to compare two coaches that went to the Super Bowl with someone else's teams.

Here is something to ponder. If the Chiefs put up a ton of points this year, does it make Martz look even worse since Vermeil will have put together 2 similar offenses with different teams? If Priest Holmes put up Marshall Faulk like numbers this year (2 years running) is he as good as Faulk or does he benefit from the system? Remember, before coming to the Rams Faulk was the starter for the Colts. Holmes was a backup for the Ravens.

Having Vardell up in Palo Alto was the reason UCLA fans called him "Tommy Touchdown" not the other way around - either way, he stinks.

Lindy ran the Packers in the wake of the "Forrest Gregg Debacle" (who could forget bumpers across Wisconsin emblazoned with "Forrest Will Set the Pack on Fire" stickers), pre-Holmgren 1988-1991.

He also was Head Coach with the Jacksonville Bulls in the USFL 1984 and 1985.

I think he meant that Brad Johnson was overrated, can't handle pressure which is why Wash. and Minn. dumped him.

Vardell began with Cleveland rather than Detroit.

And Switzer was a great college coach...in the era where you could get away with being a crooked fuck and win national titles because you paid everyone.

Its kinda hard to score when you can't stop people from scoring. Our secondary was crap last year and our whole defense was injury plauged.

And I never said the Titans were underrated.

In an era? This is how big time college football works, in the 70s, 80s, 90s and now. Tom Osbourne (Super Christian), ran one of the dirtiest programs of all time at Nebraska in the 90s winning 3 national titles, why not mention him? The NCAA has clamped down since giving SMU the death penalty in the late 80s, but to single out Switzer and his Oklahoma team as an "outlaw program" is weak. I guess the Schnellenberger/Johnson/ Ericson Miami teams were clean--you just couldn't see what the players were doing because they were always wearing camoflage off field.

Much of an Oklahoma fan?

Get over it, bub - yeah, they're all crooked. So what? The point isn't Switzer; the point is...THEY'RE CROOKED. You do know the difference between these two things, right?

Actually I'm an University of Illinois fan.

The point of my last post was that the big time programs function essentially the same way now as they did then (with the exception of scholarships, Alabama can't have 125 players dressed on Saturday).

Attacking Switzer has been trendy because he made a lot of enemies at Oklahoma and in the NFL. The same experts who said he couldn't succeed in the NFL were the same "experts" who after the Super Bowl then said it was all because of Jimmy Johnson (who immediately won a Super Bowl in Miami after cutting Don Shula's throat, right?).
