But it WAS clearly (or "crystal-clear" as you say) that this scenario was covered in the rules, and the play by Brady fit the scenario described by the rules.

Am I the only one who saw the 15 minutes ESPNEWS devoted to explaining this yesterday morning?

I have read everything there is to read and the rule was interpreted correctly. Bucs is right.

Quezzy - get over it, man. It's over. They lost. Suck it up, dude.

you know i have to admit.... if the rams had lost i probably would be rather upset too..... and they have gotten some horrible calls against them in the past... usually they have been able to overcome those though....

My question is the interpretation of this, what is a tucked ball? They say that if it was 100% tucked, it would be a fumble. But how do you determine that? I've seen some say that it has to be tucked against the body. By that definition, some quarterbacks NEVER tuck the ball. That would mean that by definition, they could never fumble if the ball is forced out by a defender.

I've seen the replay about a dozen times, and I'm sure that Brady had done all the tucking he was going to do with the ball. The passing motion was clearly 100% finished, and he had pulled the ball back in. It wasn't against his body, but he was never going to bring into his body, because he wanted to be in a position to get rid of the ball if he got the opportunity. He, in fact, had started to run when he got hit.

If the rule actually states the ball must be against the body to be ruled a tuck, then the rule needs changed. If it just says the ball must be returned to a tuck position, then I think the referee misintrepreted the play, because Brady had returned the ball to the tucked position, or the position that he was planning on running around with the ball in.

Anyone who saw the replay and still says Brady had that ball tucked against his body (instead of simply hitting his other hand which actually happened) is bitching for the sake of bitching.

It is unbelieveable that true football fans are allowing the NFL to get away with one of the biggest ass-covering wimpouts in the history of football.

Using the so-called "interpretation" of tucking the ball away that was made up on the spot by the NFL (and NEVER defined in the rulebook), if a QB fakes a pass and NEVER pulls the ball back into his chest, but runs with it, still holding the ball with one hand, and is then hit BEYOND THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE and drops the ball....

1. It is not a fumble, but an INCOMPLETE PASS (he never "tucked it away")

2. It is an ILLEGAL FORWARD PASS since it is beyond the line of scrimmage

Absolutely ridiculous bullshit. Do not be fooled by the suits. The refs made a mistake and the NFL legitimized it.

Not that that one play caused the loss, necessarily, but it was wrong with a capital WRONG.

Actually, it has been used in the past. The same rule was used when Kurt Warner dropped the ball in similar fashian against the Bucs this year. It just didn't get as much attention because the Bucs went on to win the game anyway.

I didn't see that play. Even if true, that doesn't make the "downfield illegal pass" example I gave any less valid, or the call then and now any less wrong.

No, Brady wasn't. I was giving an example of how they could "interpret" the rule.

And this from ESPN:

In a similar play in the second game of the season, the Patriots recovered an apparent fumble by Vinny Testaverde of the New York Jets but it was ruled an incomplete pass after being reviewed. The Jets went on to win 10-3.

So, it has happened lots of times. So now it happened in a playoff game. Stop whining. They interpreted the rule correctly. Now, once they change the rule and it happens again, commence bitching.

That's kind of funny that it happened before to the Patriots, because I thought they seemed awfully sure it was going to be overturned. Now I know why...

The funny thing about this (besides all the Raiders fans bitching and crying, that is) is that they just clarified the rule two years ago to take the "interpreting" out of it. The ref doesn't have to judge the QB's intent, only see where the ball is. You know there were some NFL people who didn't ever want the rule changed and could've made a difference that are screaming "There! See!?" but are really thinking "I wished I'd thought of this happening in that meeting a couple years ago..."

I'm with CRZ...I couldn't believe the Raiders took a knee. I even said aloud that they had better pray they don't lose the coin toss because they would regret not taking a shot if they did.

If both of these plays featured the QB clearly holding the ball with both hands before dropping it then I will take back my statement about them making it up on the spot. If they aren't I won't. Plus, that still doesn't void my downfield example.

BTW, I wonder how many times it was called differently than that.

Probably lots and do I agree that the league is doing a lot of spin doctoring on this.

But it's always nice to stick it to Al Davis!!

Oh, don't get me wrong. Several weeks ago I made the prediction that the Pat were going to the Superbowl, where they would be summarily slaughtered by the Rams. The pats are a great team. They're talented and lucky. By hook or crook, they're gonna win in Pittsburgh, and I'll be rooting for them at the 'Bowl, but deep in my heart, I know they're gonna die.

I dunno, Lou, the thought of seeing the Patriots slaughtered YET AGAIN in the Super Bowl by a midwest team seems like fun....

This just gets more and more bizarre by the moment ... I'd say Snyder will (or at least should) be more cautious about who he chooses, should this whole Spurrier resignation thing be legit ...
