I never actually saw that quote, but man the press was fawning over the veterans like they were Thumper getting twitterpated, and the results were hilarious on occasion. Not that I'm saying we shouldn't show full respect to all our veterans. I'm simply saying it reached disturbing heights on occasion, that's all. A while ago, right after Ray Charles and Ronald Reagan died, Imus said he wanted to play a song in their memory. He played Hit the Road Jack. Hit the Road Jack. He never ceases to amaze me.

Didn't Ray Charles sing "Hit the Road Jack"? I don't know the context, and far be it from me to defend Imus, but I heard that song played a lot for Ray Charles. Big hit for him.

That's misrepresentative. I watched that particular show on MSNBC and Imus (who was broadcasting from his ranch) was rather frustrated that they didn't have enough Ray Charles music in the NY studio to play as tribute on the show. The studio staff, who were trying to dig stuff up on the fly, cued up "Hit the Road Jack" and played it, and Imus got pissed and chewed them out for it on the air, and anytime anyone said anything remotely disparaging about Ray Charles (Bernard in particular) Imus would just get enraged.
IIRC he opened the show by playing "Night Time" in its entirety, or at least that's how the MSNBC broadcast portion opened once they cut to it from the newsbrief. (Yes, I'm a little obsessed with "Imus" on MSNBC, it's a sickness.)

He seemed pretty amused to me. Not to mention he said he thought it was funny. Bernard and the others were ripping him a new one though. |
