W's--

I just have a quick question and hopefully one of you can clear it up for me concerning Tugboat/Typhoon.

I remember the big Tugster going crazy when he finally met Hulk Hogan and shook his hand on Superstars because he was such a huge Hulkamaniac. I also remember that he was suppose to be in the Hulkster's corner at SummerSlam 1990 against Earthquake but he was replaced by the Big Bossomed Man...er Bossman. Then la di da da, he became Typhoon and teamed with Earthquake and became the Natural Disasters.

Did the WWF ever explain his heel turn? I know the seed for it was kind of planted in April on SNME after WrestleMania VII but I never saw it fully explained. The only thing I heard (rumor) was that Tugboat became angry at Hulk because Hogan never thanked him for taking care of all of the thousands of "Get Well" cards sent after Earthquake put Hogan out of action.

So, if anyone knows the explanation and why they took Tugboat out of SummerSlam (i.e. the real reason, I know the storyline had Earthquake injure Tugboat, too), you will become my new hero. :)

Mmmmm...now that is a tasty burger!

Re: SummerSlam, I think it was just a matter of Bossman being WAY more popular at the time. So injuring Tugboat did two things for the Hogan/Quake match: (A) It added a better cornerman and (B) Put more heel heat on Earthquake.

As far as the turn goes, it happened during a match between Earthquake and The Nasty Boys Vs. The Bushwhackers and Tugboat. Tugboat kept turning away whenever Luke or Butch wanted to tag him (he kept turning around and making his silly 'Tooot' sign), and then when Luke and Butch were getting triple-teamed (think it was a DQ finish), Tugboat finally came in and splashed the two of them.

So it was premeditated, but they never explained WHY he joined Earthquake.

And now you know more about Fred Ottman than anyone the world should be allowed to.

There was a some explantion for the turn, on the last ever SNME on NBC there was a battle royal, towards the end, Tugboat elimated Hogan. Hogan played bitch and had an arguement with Tugboat, when he had his back turned The Barbarian and Mr Perfect threw Tugboat over the top. A few weeks later came the aforementioned 6 man tag. Tugboat explained on Prime Time Wrestling (The period when they were filming it in front of an audience and Vince wore these UGLY ASS baggy bright workout pants) that turn as Hogan was selfish and Earthquake was always there for him while he was down.

It was all done rather halfass. Maybe a month before Earthquake squashed the Damieian, but that feud was dropped with ryhme or reason. Quake got thrown in with the Disasters, and Jake into the program with Warrior.

My youngest sister wrote one of those "get well" letters and got a postcard in return. It was a pic of Hogan doing a dumbell curl and on the back was pre-printed something like:

"Dear Hulkamaniac, thanks for your letter. It is because of the support of thousands of fans like you that I have decided to return to the ring - Hulk Hogan."

She thought he really signed it. Even at 15, I didn't have the heart to burst her bubble.

Oh my gawd...I remember that. Yeah, it was like I couldn't reply you all personally and what you said about coming back. Then his sign printed. LAME because you expect something cool back and get crap! Thanks Hulk Hogan and the WWF/E for shattering our childhood!

If I recall correctly, during The Giant's face run in '97 (after he left the nWo for the first time, and teamed with Luger), The Giant didn't even have music-- though occasionally, they had him come out to Luger's music.
