| #1 Posted on 11.9.02 1250.58 | Today I've seen almost all the flags flying at full mast. I was at our local Post Office and the flag was flying at half mast.
I become a citizen in 2 weeks and just wasn't sure which was the proper way? Post Office being federal...I took the flag flying at half mast to be a symbol of mourning.
Flag flying at full mast...I took to be pride, resillience and a symbol of healing and hope.| Promote this thread! | | kazhayashi81

Typically, the only flags I've noticed that fly at half mast on certain days(days after a former president dies, day of Pearl Harbor, etc.) are governmental buildings and offices, while most people's personal flags are continuously flown at full mast.
As I said, typically, not always. Typically, int he immediate wake of a tragedy, everyone will fly them at half mast

| #4 Posted on 11.9.02 2122.13 | If you've been studying for the citizenship test, chances are you know a hell of lot more about this than those of us lucky enough to be born in America and subsequentially went took American History in your average American public school. Congrats and much respect on becoming a citizen.

| #5 Posted on 11.9.02 2202.47 | I might be wrong, but I think that the President requested that flags be flown at half mast today as a symbol of mourning and remembrance. The federal agencies would have known about it, but the word may not have gotten out to all people who fly the colors.

Of course, with the American educational system being what it is (*hock* ptooie), I suppose you really can't blame me for not knowing that. “Now put that thing back where it came from or so help me-- Oh, hey! Instead, we're too busy learning about Saratoga and the Hundred Year's War and Waterloo bullshit and leave useful things to those who volunteer for Boy Scouts. The US school system is just fine once you start paying for it, though...

| #12 Posted on 20.9.02 1242.54 | Why should a child have any avowed sexuality? You learn about flags in Boy Scouts, and if you "know you are gay" and are talking about it at that age, your parent's should be strung up for corrupting your mind. As far as boy scouts not "accepting" gays, that is a separate issue, and you know it. To a 10 year old, sexuality, straight or gay, should not be an issue. As far as the religion aspect goes, you do not have to believe in God to be a boyscout. I have no "religion" and I was one. That accusation is just hype.

| #13 Posted on 21.9.02 1235.00 | Thanks for weighing in on this. I became a citizen yesterday and was presented with a flag. Obviously, I'm thrilled, proud and certainly don't want to show any dispesect to the flag.
