As I recall, AWA footage at the very least (and I assume UWF footage, as well) is owned by WWE. AWA Superstars of Wrestling was originally aired on ESPN from 1986-90. But presumably, ESPN has a contract with WWE to air this footage.
So does it follow that conceivably, we could also see old WWF, WCW, NWA and ECW footage on ESPN Classic? (I'd be amazed if I saw ECW footage, but probably the other three aren't out of the question).

No, I think it's more like ESPN has rights to the stuff they originally aired and those earlier deals supersede anything that came out of WWE obtaining the rights later. So conceivably you could see AWA, WCCW, GWF...and um I think that's it? I wouldn't mind seeing some GWF (but I'm probably the only one)

I've seen a little bit of UWF stuff on ESPN Classic here and there...I'd assume that WWE has no rights to those shows, or they wouldn't be showing up on a network Vince doesn't own. (The font style on some of those shows sure suggest to me 1994-era ESPN2.)

I'm with you on the GWF. The series of matches Lynn and Waltman had were great and I'd love to see it again. If I'm not mistaken Barry Horowitz held one of their titles and really any promotion that has Barry Horowitz as a champ is worth watching. I think they've shown every AWA on Espn show numerous times by now.

One of the funniest things I've ever seen in a wrestling match was in a Lynn/Waltman match where Lynn was wearing a hard kneebrace and something got f'd up and he ended up hanging upside down by the brace in an apparent accident. Waltman just had a really confused look on his face for a few seconds, figured out what was going on and ran over and just started kicking Lynn while he was hanging upside down by his brace.
And yes, Barry Horowitz is a 2 time GWF Light Heavyweight champion. As are Jerry Lynn and Sean Waltman.
The one thing that always confused me about the GWF was that even though it was the Global Wrestling Federation, they never had a World (or Global) Champion, only a North American Champion. (They also briefly had a hardcore title, the Brass Knuckles Championship, shortly before the existence of ECW.)
And as for the UWF footage, it's actually owned by Bill Watts' ex-wife. I seem to recall reading that she refused to sell the collection to Vince and instead licenses the footage and sells DVDs/merchandise under the Universal Wrestling Archives banner.

ESPN Classic shows the Herb Abrams 1990'ish UWF, not the Bill Watts Mid South UWF. Now, when they stick to the brief Herb UWF, it is good. When they show the 1993/94'ish county fair UWF it makes the IWCCW look like the WWF. Since ESPN Classic Canada has shown Florida in the past, why can't that be done in the US?
Wasn't Larry Zbyszko trying to set up a couple of AWA reunion shows? Did that ever materialize? What ever happeend to Verne Gagne after the incident in the nursing home?

I seem to recall The Patriot being the Global champ and then The Dark Patriot.I don't recall any other Global champions. Edit: You're right here's wikipedia on The GWF http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Wrestling_Federation
