As for the musical -
I remember seeing a movie on VH1 starring Peter Frampton and the Bee Gees in a musical version of the Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". This musical, I think, will rank right up there with that movie.
Though I'm not familiar with the story of 2112, I think this story sounds fairly similar to the Who's unfinished concept album, Lifehouse.

Maybe Rush did rip off the Who, who really knows? 2112 was actually a finished work, however, so I'm gonna stick with the idea that Rush is who Queen is ripping off here.

To be precise, Ben Elton is ripping off Rush/The Who - Queen (with the help of a member of the Stock, Aitken & Waterman production team which made Rick Astley a star) is simply providing the music. Much like the relationship between the Beatles and the aforementioned "Sgt. Pepper's" movie.

Rush were not the first band to do this concept and Queen will not be the last. Anyway who cares if the concept isn't original... the music will be. Personally the mere idea of Brian May and Roger Taylor working together again gives me goosbumps.
