As a Marlin fan, this sickens me. We offered him $2 million less, but he has to hold out for more. I hope you're happy Pudge. You got the contract you were looking for, and all you had to do to get it was sign with the worst team in baseball. Talk about only being in it for the money.
Ya have to wonder how much of this is Boras' doing, though.

He took the $10M from the Marlins and you won the World Series....

It's hard to see why anyone would vote for Wesley Clark after his dismal showing. If you want a war hero, there's Kerry. If you want a Southerner, there's Edwards. If you want a crackpot, there's Dean (though we'll grant that Clark is more of a crackpot). - James Taranto, WSJ | geemoney

I didn't think there were any other "official" offers out there at the time he signed with Florida

| #4 Posted on 4.2.04 0842.18 | | This is a terrible signing by the Tigers. Four years for a catcher that has peaked. 40 million into one guy that put up a .294 average and hit only 16 homeruns. Sure, it's deceant for a catcher, but they could have gotten two guys at 20 million for 4 years to put up those kind of numbers. A couple years from now when you wonder how the Tigers never got out of the hole, this signing will be the reason why. There will come a time when they won't be able to sign their up and coming players because they have a broken down catcher to pay. | geemoney

Actually, I think his contract states something to the effect that if he gets injured in his first two years, the Tigers can void the last two years of his deal.

Still, given the rest of the Tigers roster, it's like putting a gold hubcap on a Trabant at this point.

MH: What’s a clever way to say that I have a penis? CJ: Uh…Mark, nobody’s going to buy that shirt. MH: How about if I say that I’ve got…a…uh…? CJ: Coming up with T-Shirt ideas is hard Mark, why not leave it to the WWE marketing department. MH: I know! I’ve got it! CJ: Got what? MH: Stank! That’s Mah Stank! I’m gonna make a fortune!! CJ: “That’s Mah Stank”? MH: On the front it’ll say “Can You Smell It?” and on the back it’ll say “That’s Mah Stank”. Everybody’ll buy it because they’ll think it’s a Rock shirt. CJ: You know…you might be on to something there, sad to say. MH: I can’t wait to show mah stank to Trish.
You know, I have a feeling that Spanky didn’t quit, he was fired. Why? So they could repackage Mark Henry as “Stanky.” Think about THAT! --Matt "Excalibur05" Hocking, 1/19/04 Raw Satire

Pudge's defense has waned a bit over the years...he still throws out runners, but he had alot of passed balls and errors last year compared to years past.
Plus, there's always that complaint that he doesn't work with pitchers enough (I don't necessarily agree with that).
I wonder if he'll DH in Detroit, maybe as a way to keep him healthy for the long-term?

The injury clause is based on the same injury that kept him out for 5 weeks last season and would allow the Tiger to void the deal after 2 seasons.

Might not be such a bad idea for the time being by the Tigers. From reports they are selling alot more tickets
-DETROIT - Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez has quickly started to return the investment the Detroit Tigers made in him.
The team set a single-day record by selling more than $160,000 worth of tickets on Monday, the day the 10-time All-Star catcher was introduced as the newest Tiger.
On Tuesday, the Tigers generated even more revenue from ticket sales to break the record from the previous day. The team is still tabulating sales from Wednesday, but it sold another $100,000-plus worth of tickets.
"Hall of Fame players don't drop on your door step every day," Tigers senior vice president Jim Stapleton said on Thursday. "There's no question he's made a significant impact, and we've tried to make the most of his arrival with an aggressive radio and print marketing campaign."
Stapleton said the team has sold more tickets than it did at the same time last year, but declined to provide specifics.
Detroit drew 1.37 million fans at home last season, 27th among the 30 major league teams.

Don't get me wrong, he's still a good player, especially offensively (although not as he once was). I mean, look how he led the team through the playoffs. Like I said, I don't agree with the notion that he didn't help the pitchers, because the Marlins pitchers never complained once about him, and the young staff finally came into their own last year with him behind the plate.
Besides, who are our alternatives? Unproven alleged-rapist Ramon Castro, and light-hitting career-backup Mike Redmond.
