From PSM:

The first prototype of the PSP will be shown at next year's E3, the games will be revealed at Tokyo Game Show 2004, and the handheld is set to go on sale world-wide on Christmas 2004.

Button Layout: The standard circle, triangle, x, square, L1 and R1 buttons, one analog stick, start and select buttons.

Specs: 33 million polygons per seconds, much more than PS1's max
7.1 SURROUND SOUND!
Anti-aliasing and NURB support
PSP CPU runs at roughly 333MHz and features one math-crunching vecotr unit, as opposed to PS2's two
Wireless networking (say goodbye to link cables)
Infrared data port (might be for linking cell phones, or some kind of remote)

Ken Kutaragi, president of Playstation franchise, has said that PSP's graphics may even SURPASS Dreamcast's and PS2's graphics....

How is the surround sound supposed to work in a handheld console??? They can't have seven or eight speakers around the unit, can they? I can only imagine some of that wireless networking will connect to your home theater, somehow. (IR port to PS2 to stereo?) As cool as that sounds, for a handheld, it seems a bit unneccessary.

The wireless communications are good and long overdue.

As for the graphics, I'll believe 'em when I see 'em.

All this PSP talk reminds the old Apple Newton, a PDA that fit in your pocket, if your pocket happened to be the size of a sheet of paper. And it was portable, if your idea of portable was those brick cell phones that Zach Morris used to carry around.

Seriously, it's all talk until they actually show the thing. Besides, Sony's got a history of overstating (overhyping?) a console's capabilities. Plus, if they somehow manage to squeeze wireless networking, surround sound (ha!), and all that processing power into something slightly bigger than a Game Boy, do you have any idea how much that will COST?

My prediction: it winds up being a small, portable version of the PS1, a little bigger than a Discman with a flip top cover. The games will be PS1 compatible. And it STILL won't come close to the Game Boy.

I do like the infrared port for link gaming, though. That's an idea that's WAY overdue.

There's more JoCo and Third Eye Blind will make their debut soon too. To be honest, I'm not sure I can keep up with the RBN so I may just post when it's a band I now or song I want.
