Starting today, PlayStation Network and Qriocity account holders in the United States can begin the enrollment process for the identity theft protection program by visiting http://us.playstation.com/news/consumeralerts/identity-theft-protection/. We are also notifying customers of the enrollment landing page via email, which you will receive in your inbox this week.

    ...

In order to be eligible, account holders must be residents of the United States with active accounts as of April 20, 2011.

Is a service like this available for Canadians?

FWIW, I got the email today.

Atari says they won't be making the release date on a Dungeons and Dragons game because the PSN is not going to relaunch by 05/31. Unless May is longer than I know, that means Sony's not making their end of month target.

Not that it really matters - I use PSN cash cards (or whatever those things are called) for my purchases. I don't trust using credit cards online. I'd rather spring for a prepaid one and use it there. I think it's safer.

I would pre-order Infamous2 and get some of those snazzy unlocked items, but I don't think I'd be able to grab them with the network down. That sales hook vanishes for me.

End of the week: figure on Sunday and be surprised either. Part of the stuff to come back on would be voucher redemption, so they'd be able to start doing the Welcome Back gifts, though that may trail a couple days behind the store.

Ok, legal question about all of this.

Do they even try to catch the hackers that do this stuff? Or is it a case of the FBI or whoever not having agents capable of going after someone at this level?

The FBI and others at that level do have people of capable of tracking down the people, and I'm sure they've been going thru the server logs to find the IP addresses of those who came in. It can just be a long process to get from that IP to the actual people behind it.

That's about as specific as they get. Theoretically, this is the fix to get the store running this week (which they say is still the target.)

In the US, the store went back up late last night, though I haven't seen a full list of updates. I'll post the list in the usual weekly thread when it's up.

The Welcome Back giveaways are NOT up. They're still testing on those (but surely must have them done before E3, if they want to live.) If you haven't already or it hasn't worked for you, you ought to reset your password and make sure the email address on your account is actually the one you think it is, because they're liable just to mail out voucher codes to the email addresses registered to the accounts.

Q: What’s in the Welcome Back Program?
A: To start, all PSN members who had signed up before the outage (April 20, 2011) will be able to select two games for the PS3 and two games for the PSP systems.

For PS3 owners, go to the ‘Welcome Back’ section in the PlayStation Store, and select 2 titles from the following list:

    Dead Nation
    inFAMOUS
    LittleBigPlanet
    Super Stardust HD
    Wipeout HD + Fury

For PSP owners, go to the ‘Welcome Back’ section of PlayStation Store on your PSP system and select 2 titles from the following list:

    LittleBigPlanet (PSP)
    ModNation Racers
    Pursuit Force
    Killzone Liberation

Select your first game from “Game 1”, then return to the Welcome Back page and go to “Game 2” to select your second game out of the remaining choices available. This goes for both PS3 and PSP.

In addition, we’re giving access to our premium subscription service, PlayStation Plus...go to the PlayStation Store and under the ‘Welcome Back’ section, select ‘PlayStation Plus: 30 Days Free’, and you’ll be given access to all of the benefits of PlayStation Plus. Note that this will not auto-renew and simply expires 30 days after activation.

Q: Do I get to keep the games in PlayStation Plus forever?
A: Content that is free in PlayStation Plus will not be available after your PlayStation Plus time has expired. However, if you decide to join PlayStation Plus, you’ll have access to all of the content you downloaded during your 30 day access for as long as you are a subscriber.

(if you use a PS+ discount to buy a game, that does stay with you forever.)

You have until July 3rd to pick the games out.

They really should give you more than six games to choose from. I'm not expecting Red Dead Redemption or anything, but couldn't they give some games that have newer sequels out. Uncharted 1, Resistance 1 or 2, Killzone 2, etc...

In trying this just now, I keep getting errors due to the network being congested I'm guessing. I tried to select the free game 1, it errored a ton of times and then vanished. Same thing with game 2. Had to restart, then go to

PlayStation Network > Account Management > Transaction Management > Services List > SCEA Promotions > Game 1 > Select Content

which also errored a ton before it let me in, but was eventually able to get the downloads going.

Thanks for the advice. I was having the same problem. Thankfully, I am now downloading LBP and only have 251 minutes to go. When the executives at Sony die, I want to be sure to be there to kick them straight in the balls on their way to hell. Sony, I hope you die of a very painful venereal disease.

It's good to be persistent. Whenever I got an error message, I pressed "O" and then "X" right immediately afterward...and it would work.

I already own Little Big Planet - it's a lot of fun. The games I've chosen are Wipeout HD and InFamous.

Oh, and when I get the PlayStation Plus started, I'll probably download all the free games listed on it. Same with the videos.

Edit: I noticed a caveat: any games that are free on PlayStation Plus - will not work after the month is over. Not sure about the discounted games, but still...that kinda sucks. But...meh.

Correct.

Discounted games are yours forever. Just the free games/avatars/whatever are limited to subscribers.

Not sure if you guys have tried, but it looks like if you had multiple accounts registered on your system prior to 4/20, you can download 2 games per account. I didn't, sadly, but my nephews did and now they're REALLY happy.

Gamespot is offering a pretty good trade-in deal for the original Infamous. And the PSN is offering it as a free game. So you could trade in your disc copy, download the free version, and still have the game.
