08/14 - Madden '08.

IGN's review was not kind, citing the 30 fps issue. Others have generally liked the game more, but it's clear the XBox 360 version is superior.

I did not stand outside at midnight for the video game, but I'm picking it up in a few hours.

Do people really do that for Madden? Really? Apart from the last Harry Potter book, I can't remember anyone doing that for anything here. Probably nothing since the previous Harry Potter book. Even when the Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3 were released, the stores opened early, but not at midnight.

Yeah midnight for Madden seems like EA paid some money to have stores pump this up. I can kinda maybe sorta see for a big game that everyone has waited years for. But even then it almost never is a big deal. Like Halo or GTA might get some people out, but Madden comes out every year and it's barely changed each time. Crazy to think that anyone but drunk college kids would need it at midnight and even then they lack the motivation to go to the store.

I had not heard about it this year, but they were running commercials for the idea on ESPN quite a bit last night (to the point the SportsCenter guys were mocking it by the end of their just-after midnight show) and I've read blogs mentioning going. Based on the ad campaign, EA was really trying to push the some sort of Madden Culture, and maybe this was some scheme to push that. It's not like they're in any danger of running out of copies.

I don't know if I would've gotten it today if I hadn't already traded in a game to put a deposit in.

I've known of midnight releases for Madden and NCAA a few years running, actually, in NCAA's case, there seems to be less as the years go on. It seems dependent on the store, at least for NCAA; Target or Toys R Us or such will have the game in the display cases whenever they get it in, and just let you start buying them at 12:00:01 AM the day of release. Whenever I've heard of midnight releases, they seem to be at EB or GameStop or such; I actually would wait at midnight for NCAA if the EB here wasn't in a mall, and thus couldn't do that type of thing. I figured they were done for bigger games outside of those two series, like, I don't know, a new Metal Gear or something, but I wouldn't know.

So is Target or GameStop or whatever normally open past midnight? Maybe it's just that here, we don't even have 24-hour Wal-Marts or anything...

I know GameStops aren't - it sounded like the one I went to opened up for a couple hours at midnight and then closed back down. I haven't seen a 24 hour Target but it sounds plausible.
