Whenever I try to set up an online connection for my PS2 using Comcast, the connection test fails. I'm using the correct username and password, and I've followed Comcast's customer service suggestion (turn off the modem, wait 30 seconds, and try again). Is there anything else I can try to do, or am I stuck?

Why do you have a username and password?

It's the username and password for the Comcast account, not for the PS2. I also tried connecting without the name and password, but those attempts were unsuccessful as well.

OK. I haven't ever worked with a cable modem account that had a username and password. Well - not in 8 years. Back in 1997 I had Road Runner with Time Warner (I think it was Southwestern Cable at that point) and you had to log on.

Sorry... usually these things are just DHCP.

Do you have a router in place on your network? Are you taking the ethernet cable straight from the back of the modem to the PS2?

1. I don't know (hopefully that's connected to question #2).
2. Yes.

I don't think you're supposed to use your Comcast username/password. At least I don't have to.

Here's the best I can offer:

Try the website of one of the games you want to play online - maybe they will have something like this? This one is for Tony Hawk 3

I found, after some thorough searching of the Comcast website, that I do not need my password or DHCP Host Name; rather, I just needed to let the test run and succeed. But the test doesn't succeed! How can the same modem, Ethernet cable, connection, everything, work on my computer and not my PS2?

Because you may not have your PS2 configured correctly.

You probably have to have it set up for DHCP. I'm not sure how you would do this.

Once you have your PS2 set up for DHCP, you would need to completely power down both devices. Then, bring the modem back online. This will clear out its connection to any other devices. After that, you can bring your PS2 online and it should request an IP address through DHCP.

What Online adaptor do you have for the PS2? Where are you configuring the PS2 settings?

How old is your PS2? I have heard that some of the original (2000) PS2's won't work with the network adapter. Mine is from 2001, and I haven't been able to get the network adapter working myself. I tried with username, w/o username, setting it for dhcp, not setting it for dhcp, connecting it through my router, connecting it straight into the cable modem, etc. Suffice to say, I'll be watching this thread intently.

I'm pretty sure that I got this PS2 in 2002. It worked fine the last time I tried to go online; unfortunately that was a year and a half ago. Since then I've moved and changed from DSL to cable. The instructions that I got from Comcast are:

1. Choose cable ISP.
2. Say "Yes" to "Do you have an ISP?"
3. Choose automatic settings.
4. No password.
5. No DHCP.
6. Let the test run.
7. Save the settings.

I'm getting to step 6, but the test is failing. I'm starting to think that I'm just going to have to manually update my MVP 2005 rosters.

OK, we're getting halfway there.

You are trying to configure this using MVP Baseball 2005, is that correct?

Did you try going through the steps from Comcast and saying yes to DHCP? I would think that Comcast would use DHCP, since everybody I've ever dealt with does.

I tried that, but came up blank when it asked me for a DHCP host name.

Just pick anything for the host name. Back on the @home network when it existed, you had to have a specific username to get a DHCP address. This is generally not the setup on Cable ISPs today.

Thank God. Using "anything" as my DHCP Host Name, I have finally gotten connected and downloaded the latest online rosters for MVP 2005. Thanks a lot, everyone.

I would say avg or vista are to blame. something is stopping the exe from running that unzips the core. it ownloaded fine so your zonealarm is probably OK. Try the official forums. I don't use Vista, so I'm no help there.
