Both have dropped their price down to $199.99 (PS2 as of now and X-Box as of the 20th).

Makes me want to go out and buy one...But I also feel sorry for the people who already have them.

I'm guessing what happened here, and I could be way off base, was that Microsoft announced (because sales, especially internationally) for X-Box have been REALLY sluggish, decided to drop their price down to compete with Gamecube (and blow by PS2).

Sony sees what Microsoft is doing, realizes they can't compete in a market with two cheaper systems and decides to drop their price as well.

(and if you still care, PSX prices have now dropped to under $50.)

In Holland ( I assume all of Europe) they sliced the prizes of the Xbox a few weeks ago.
IMO it is more of a marketing ploy than bad sales.
Then again...450 Euro is alot (about 350-375 USD)
They have dropped it to 299 Euro now, the week before the GameCube was released here (may 3rd).
Nintendo then immediately announced to drop the prize of the GameCube from 299 Euro to 219.

I believe that MS is offering people who have already bought an Xbox a refund in the form of a free game or something like that over here.
But I haven't heard or seen any confirmation of that.

The thing that sucks big time still is that games are just SO fucking expensive in comparison..
If the game doesn't live up to your expectations you've wasted alot of money imo.

On that note, I am waiting until WM X8 comes out for the Gamecube, see how good it is and then I might buy a console.

Yeah, in the UK it's a total price war too. X-box is now £199, PS2 is now £139 (!) and GC launched at £129. Unbelievable, but fantastic for the consumer, and boy am I pleased Microsoft doesn't have a stranglehold on the console industry as well as the PC industry or God knows what we'd be paying.

I still rate PS2 as the best value at the moment (the back catalogue makes it so), with GC a close second (mainly for what is to come rather than what's out already). The X-box I still don't rate apart from Halo (which is awesome), maybe better games will start to come out, but as is I just don't think it has as good games as the other two.

The MS compensation deal (in Europe) is three games (off of a list they compiled) and a controller. Not bad, £110 worth of goods, for a £100 price cut. There's details on the official website for each country (which address escapes me at the moment, something like www.xbox.com/yourcountriesname).

In a nutshell -- Microsoft needed a price drop. Sony didn't, but could afford to, and did so to minimize the effectiveness of Microsoft's. And Nintendo's now working out how low _they_ can afford to go.

The Xbox is doing okay in the US, but not nearly as well as Microsoft had hoped -- it didn't even outsell the PS2 at Christmas. In Japan, it's doing far worse. This puts the PS2 in the driver's seat worldwide: a much larger customer base, a larger game library, and (so far) more exclusive games that sell systems. Take out games that are multiplatform (EA sports/SSX, Tony Hawk, etc.) and what do you have left?

PS2: Grand Theft Auto 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, Gran Turismo 3, Virtua Fighter 4, Tekken 4 (coming), Final Fantasy 10, Devil May Cry (basically Resident Evil on crystal meth), Jak and Daxter (right out of the Crash Bandicoot factory)... these are brand names and franchises that are market-proven. Being in the driver's seat allows for quirkier niche titles (think Rez, Frequency, DDR, Mister Mosquito, Fatal Frame) to have some success and bring weirdos like me out of the woodwork.
Gamecube: Super Smash Brothers, Super Monkey Ball, Resident Evil remixed, and, er... Pikmin? More important, however, is what the GC fanbase knows is _coming_. Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Metroid, Starfox -- the franchise titles. Half the people who bought Cubes did so because they knew that's where those series would continue. (Snagging the Resident Evil license was a nice bonus.)

Xbox: Halo, Dead or Alive 3 (with DoA2 on PS2), Jet Set Radio Future (whose predecessor didn't save the Dreamcast), Project Gotham Racing (ditto)... are we down to Amped already? The Xbox launched on Halo, smoke and mirrors, and it's STILL at that point for all intents and purposes. There are no expectations with the Xbox, no legacies, and that can work as a strong negative.

It's not to say that the shared games aren't as good (or better) on Xbox as on PS2 -- they are. It's not that quality exclusives aren't coming _eventually_ to the Xbox and the Gamecube -- they are. But if you asked me tomorrow "What's the best reason to buy the Xbox (or the Gamecube) INSTEAD of the PS2?", I wouldn't have an answer for you.

So the price cuts have begun. Sony knows very well that if the prices are the same, the PS2 will continue to keep pace with the Xbox, and that's all they need to remain number one. Microsoft needs something to kickstart their sales, but they can't go lower than they just did. And Nintendo, whose price advantage over the competitors just vanished, will likely do what Nintendo does best -- cut the Gamecube price a little, promise flagship titles down the road, and focus on the Game Boy Advance (where they ARE the only game in town).

Woo! I'm a long-winded bastard!

PS2 will lose out in the long run to the XBox.

I've talked to game programmers who HATE the PS2. The development time is longer, the programming is harder, you have to tweak things a lot more to make them work. Contrast this to the XBox - a system most programmers already know how to make work.

We'll see. I'll be at E3 next week - I expect to have a more enlightened view of where things are at after that.

Since when did programmers determine the course of console gaming? As long as there are millions of people willing to shell out for another GTA and Gran Tourismo and VirtuaFighter and Tekken, game companies will find people to code them.

And Sony will do everything they can to make sure they're developed for the PS2. Sony is a different company than Microsoft, but remember, they're the ones who took on an 800lb. gorilla named Nintendo and won. They know only too well the fickle nature of the console market. They're not `dead' or even `dying' by any means.

Besides, do you think anybody actually likes programming to the Windows API with the WFC? Hell, if programmers had a lot of say in the direction of anything, nobody would have ever coded a line in COBOL or C# and we'd all be running linux ;)

A little harsh Tarnish, but I tend to agree. Right now, Sony has a strangle hold on the videogame industy and if your going to make decent money in it...the best choice to develop for is the PS2. A pain in the ass it is to program for, but a popular pain in the ass. Companies will go to where the money is.

Main advantage MS has (besides basically being a computer) is their amazingly deep pockets. They can just buy what they need to keep a float, if it comes to that. Hopefully Morrowind will do well for them. I keep hearing nothing but positive things about it on the PC.

Of course Nintendo always has a good to great product, with it's games alone, so ya never know. They just need to get more agressive. They should have a great lineup at E3.

E3 will be fun the watch this year. Alot of announcements have already been made. It makes you wonder what kind of suprises they have left.

The Atari 2600 was a royal bitch to program for. The Intellivision and Colecovision were not only friendlier to code, they had more memory and better graphics capabilities... yet the 2600 maintained its position as the market leader. Why? It had a huge market penetration, it had the licensed games people wanted, and as the years went by, programmers learned to bang on the hardware and make it do increasingly advanced things.

The PS1 wasn't much better than the PS2 in terms of ease-of-development. The Dreamcast had better specs and a WinCE development environment. Yet the PS1 brushed the DC aside until the PS2 took over and killed it. Why? The same reasons - market penetration, brand-name recognition, and increasingly sophisticated PSX games. (And Sega of America was managed by dolts, but that's another story.) A lot of DC games that were ports were critically panned, specifically because they seemed like rushed, unoptimized games that didn't take advantage of the DC's features -- something that takes a lot of time to master, regardless of the system.

And now we have the PS2 and Xbox in a similar situation. Time will tell.

None of these are inherently bad systems -- no system that has some quality games for it is a bad system. I still play Tempest 2000 on my Jaguar now and then.

Microsoft and Nintendo need _big_ things at E3 this year in terms of software. It should be interesting to see which games make it.

Food Fight never came out for the 2600. A decent version exists for a later sequel, the Atari 7800.

As it happens, gadgets like this already exist, and I own one that blows the Jakks one out of the water. It's called a "TV Boy", and works in a very similar manner -- except that this one has _127_ Atari games built into it, instead of 10. (It doesn't have Adventure, unfortunately, and it's not exactly available on American shelves.)

http://pelikonepeijoonit.net/page.cgi?pkpcode=tvboy

There are others in the TV Boy line, but this is the only one I know of that's NTSC and will thus work on US televisions.

On a related retrogaming note, some mad genius ported STELLA (a very nice Atari emulator for the PC) to the Sega Dreamcast. The end product, DCStella, lets you put some or all of the Atari ROMs on one disc and play them with the DC controller. Non-joystick games aren't supported yet, sadly.

From what I understand, Microsoft was actually LOSING money on every X-Box sold at $299. That's why Sony made the move. Either Microsoft would a) stay at the same price, and almost surely lose market share or b) lower their price, meaning that they are losing even more money on each unit sold. They chose 'b'.

Yep, out of the three, only Sony makes money off the sale of the systems. They put all their resources into R&D back in the day and make their own parts at a better price than the others purchase theirs from. That's why out of the three, SOny put(s) the least amount of effort into stopping piracy. GC and X-Box NEED to make money off of the game sales, PS2 doesn't, as long as people buy the system.
