During the NHL Draft

The Philadelphia Flyers made the biggest trade of the night by acquiring All-Star defenseman Chris Pronger from Anaheim in a multi-player trade. The Ducks reacquired right wing Joffrey Lupul and received defenseman Luca Sbisa and two first-round draft picks.

This isn't good for him. He's lost a step, and has always been a bit week, IMO. The eastern teams will beat the crap out of him.

from Wash Times hockey twitter:

GMGM: Anaheim wanted a goalie, Carlson, a guy out of the lineup and something else for Pronger

I watch this whole draft to see huge trades like Heatley and Lecavalier and all I get is this one? No fair. At least I got to hear the GMs congratulate the Pittsburgh Penguins.

I think 1) Pronger will be Penguins fans' least favorite player in the league after the first game against the Flyers next season and 2) Philly gave up a a lot for a 34 year old with one year left on his contract, even if he signs an extension. In the short-term it greatly improves their D, which was pretty exposed in the last two series against the Penguins. At least their goalie is still Ray Emery. Is Philadelphia over the cap now?

I'm not sure if they are, but Anaheim was in position to just absolutely molest Philly, here. The Flyers were desperate to get Lupul's contract off of their books, and everybody knew it.

And considering, as a Pens fan, we've had to watch them deal with the likes of Derian Hatcher and Steve Downie, I'm not sure Pronger's going to bring anything in the cheapshot department that we haven't already seen out of the Flyers before.

In other words, Thank God they didn't get J-Bo.

Pronger's a free agent after this season, as well. The Flyers must think they'll win a Cup with him next year to give away so much to get him. They won't.
