I noticed this in a post I made in this thread (wienerboard.com).
Originally, I typed &gt; and &lt; to get the less-than and greater-than signs (< and >). When I started editing the post, it now had just the signs, instead of the code. So then when I hit "EDIT POST" it turned <img src="">... into and went to look for a picture in the dummy location I had provided. I don't know what you can do for that though.

Apparently it also does the same thing when you quote someone, as your response shows. It's good to know, at least.
