Believe me, I watched enough Benitez games as an Oriole fan that I hope I'll never see him again on our team. He was the choke artist supreme. Sure, he could throw fast and hard, but he always seemed to give the other team the break they needed. We'd always groan when we'd see him on his way in.

I just don't see a quiet guy like Lowell or a head case like Conine stepping up and taking command of the locker room.

Conine is a head case? That's news to me.

Yup, Connine apparently refused to play for Davey Johnson in Baltimore for a while because Davey coached the Mets when they beat the Red Sox back in 86, which were Connine's team at the time. It took thorough convincing from front office management to finally get him back on the field, he nearly voided the rest of his 2 year contract at the time.

I'm not sure if that's as much of a case of being a head case as it is being a bitter Red Sox fan. Who's ever heard of that?

In the context of baseball, the use of drugs hurts only the player. In the context of baseball, the use of alcohol hurts only the player. In the context of baseball, womanizing hurts whom? Maybe the wife of the player? In the context of baseball, felonies are crimes against society, not against baseball. In the context of baseball, gambling is the only crime against baseball.

Gambling, in the context of baseball, is a capital offense and Rose has richly earned-- hell, he agreed to-- his death sentence. Let him hang.

He's been a "model citizen" with the Marlins, so I don't think that's going to be a problem.

Wondering why you haven't seen Benitez on the mound yet? Since he did not throw during the offseason, the Marlins are giving him time to build arm strength, the Miami Herald reports.

Just thought I'd throw this little tidbit into the discussion. Sounds like he went through some great preperation for this season.

//edit: After I read the above, I read that Lowell was experience soreness in his elbow after he didn't throw during the entire offseason? What is up with this?

All I know is that Lowell missed a month at the end of the season after being hit in the wrist, and played little in the playoffs. Lingering effects, I'd guess.

EDIT: Thought I'd throw this in there, a quote by Lowell from the Marlins site: "This is getting blown out of proportion. I'm all right."

I'm talking more about these guys not throwing at all during the offseason. IE, not doing what they should be doing to perform at their job.

I want to go out on record now and say that the 2004 season is going to be the year of the Ken Griffey Jr comeback. That's right folks, I'm predicting a full season, Come Back Player of the Year, and 50 HRs out of Junior this year.

That's easy. They've been fortunate to have the talent to win a title. Boston and the Chicago teams haven't. It has nothing to do with any goat or Babe Ruth.
