Chris Benoit remains the favorite to replace the injured Kurt Angle in a match against Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania. One possible storyline could really turn things upside down. It would include Angle handing over the WWE Title to Brock Lesnar this Tuesday at the Smackdown taping due to his injury, then having Chris Benoit face him later in the night and win the title. Brock would then turn heel, setting up another Brock/Benoit WWE Title match at WrestleMania. This scenario would allow WWE to replace the injured Edge with another top level babyface (Benoit) and the injured Angle with another top level heel (Brock).

I highly doubt that this scenario will take place, but it sure is a nice conversation piece.

Despite Brock being pushed as the monster face as of late, I'd much prefer him to turn heel over Benoit. I'd hate to see Benoit reduced to the level of "heel-face wishy-washiness" that poor Bret had to deal with.
Of course what actually happens, we'll have to wait and see.

I like the idea of Benoit being in the match, but I don't want to see another title being handed over and not earned.

The thing is that Angle has to get injured on screen, I think. There has to be a storyline involving this. What I'd like to see is Lesnar kicking the holy crap out of Angle the whole match. Team Angle runs down to interfere which draws out Chris Benoit. Benoit holds off Team Angle and Brock gets the win. Team Angle abandons their captain b/c of the loss and let Brock have his way with Kurt. Lesnar simply destroys Angle over and over with move after move until during one, Angle starts grabbing his neck and saying "My neck is broken" or something like that. Benoit, realizing how bad this could be for Angle jumps in and tries to stop Brock, but he can't. He eventually grabs a chair and knocks him out. Brock wakes up and gets pissed off. He starts grabbing and throwing stuff. He demands a match between he and Benoit at Mania.

This would accomplish a couple things. Team Angle would be made as total assholes for deserting Kurt. Brock gets built back into his badass Drago persona. Benoit helps his old tag team partner.

Makes sense, especially since Benoit had a year long neck injury so despite not getting along with Kurt he doesn't want to see that happen to him.

As for the first scenario. I don't think handing over the belt to Lesnar would be too bad, mainly because Benoit is going to win it from him to screw over the whole thing. I mean when Triple H got handed the World Title would be have complained so much if someone like Booker T ended up winning that same night?

Benoit going into Mania with the belt would be up there on the list of ultimate Catch-22's. While most of the net would be ecstatic over Benoit winning a World Title and actually be World Champ going into Mania (lets be honest, most of us only hoped for a run during a lesser PPV), it would have one huge drawback: Benoit would go into Mania as the biggest lame duck champion since Ron Garvin at Starrcade '87.
It would probably be better for Benoit to face a champion Lesnar at Mania, thus providing hope for the upset victory, then for him to go into Mania as champion, when the whole building knows he's jobbing the belt back to Lesnar.

I think I may have posted this elsewhere a few days back, but I still like the scenario of this week's SmackDown starting off with Angle injured backstage, so that Benoit can take credit for injuring both Angle and Edge because he's ``the best damn technical wrestler'' etc.
Sure, it would turn Benoit heel instead of Brock (in which case they would eventually need to elevate someone else to top SD heel) but it would live up to his Crippler nickname. Plus, I think the idea of Benoit and Brock fighting for the vacant title at WrestleMania is far more intriguing than having Brock win the title only a couple of weeks before his big title defense.

The ONLY acceptable way to crown a champ after the title has been vacated is by tournament. Hopefully there's enough time to get one together in time for WM.

As for all the Kurt putting over Brock scenarios, come on. If the guy can't wrestle another match because of the fear of serious injury, how do you propose

Lesnar simply destroys Angle over and over with move after move until during one, Angle starts grabbing his neck and saying "My neck is broken" ?

And if Angle is healthy enough for that, why not just have it be for the title? The guy's going to be out for a year, I don't think there is any question that if he had enough for a short, semi-squash job to Brock at WM, that it would be the way to go.

I don't envy the writers one bit. This is going to be one seriously tough bind to get out of.

One point, though, is that this title isn't vacant. Angle is the champ, and he has a defense against Brock on Thursday. If a champion can't defend against a scheduled opponant, HE FORFEITS. That's how it's supposed to work. So regardless of what program they decide to run with afterwords, the smartest thing that they can do is just have Kurt give up the belt without giving away the Angle-Brock match.
