http://www.cnn.com/ 2004/US/Midwest/04/02/ missing.student/index.html

I thought things were a little fishy when they mentioned she just had left her house without anything and had left her door open. Plus, saying that she was "attacked" last month and no one was charged should have thrown up some warning flags right there.

CAN they even press charges against her? She didn't file a false report, her parents filed it because they thought she was missing. I suppose she can be charged with lying to police officers conducting an investigation, but since the investigation was bogus from day one....man this stuff is confusing.

Man...I thought the same thing when I first read the reports of her going missing..with the camera seeing her walk out alone, leaving her coat, door open, etc.

And now....what a dumbass. To go and buy all the things you said you were abducted with from a local store....search weather and woods in your area on the collegiate web, gees.

If you were gonna set something like this up you think you would be a little smarter about it.

And how pissed if you're the parents. The shit you got put through. And a quick search on google for her name gives you a plethora of websites aiding in her search, etc.

Ugh.

Oh, Venom, I think there are a handful of charges that could be filed but nothing real serious. I'll have to double check (or ask Parts Unknown, he's pretty good with charges and sentencing).

My girlfriend is a psychiatrist and she says just by reading the news stories that this girl has some serious mental problems. Even the original mugging story is suspect.

A little story:

This girl lived in my appartment building. I say "lived" only in the sense that I cannot imagine that she will come back to school here after everything that has happened.

At 3 a.m. Saturday night/Sunday morning, the police pounded on my door and asked me if they could ask me a few questions. Thought #1: Oh, shit, what did I do? They said that Audrey had been missing for what they believed to be a little more than a day, and wondered if I'd seen her.

"A day?"

Ok, now I don't know about you, but I've been gone for more than a weekend before, and nobody's EVER tried to go looking for me. But, whatever. I'm more than willing to answer that "No, I haven't seen her, but if I will, I'll let you guys know."

By Monday we had been informed that the FBI had been called in to aid the investigation (I looked but I didn't see Nunzio) and that our rooms would be subject to search pending our signing of a waiver that would allow officers into our rooms. I had nothing to hide (well except for all the MP3s on my computer and the huge mess that I call my desk and floor), so whatever. At this point I had become comfortable ignoring the news vans and crews parked outside the lobby since Sunday evening.

After she was found, almost immediately, everybody had their theories about how much of a hoax this was. I mean, she was either stupid for going out alone after being knocked out in February, or there was something wrong with her head and she was making this kidnapping up.

Sure enough.

It's gone from campus-wide panice to campus joke in 3 days. At least I've had some entertainment this week. Plus I get to have been part of a national scandle that didn't involve any real, actual problems!

Maybe I should put something clever down here....

Hey, c'mon! One of those was probably some co-workers of mine, and I bet I knew some of the others. Ya couldn't help 'em out with an interview? :-)

This whole story...Ye Gods.

EDIT:

The dude in the suit out front is Michael Leckrone, director of bands at the University of Wisconsin for 35 years. He was giving his opening monologue today at the UW Band's spring concert tour stop at the Weidner Center in Green Bay, when the whole tuba section stood up and interrupted him with this joke:

"What's the difference between Audrey Seidler and Mike Leckrone?
One needs psychological help! The other...is a college student!"

We laughed our asses off, and at the same time were amazed the UW tuba section had the cojones to make that joke.

I've been a college girl under pressure who knew other people in the same situation, and I can see how even a not-conspicuously-nutso person could do something self-dramatizing at this age just to get attention and sympathy. She's young, she's away from home, she's seeing the rest of her life yawning in front of her, and she goes a little off the rails.

Once she was found in a merely cold and wet condition, I suspected it was something of the kind. However, the store tape showing her buying all the props for the "kidnap" puts her over the line rather farther than I expected--this wasn't spur-of-the-moment. I hope she can get straightened out, but yes, I think she ought to be liable for some of the trouble and expense the police went to. Other crimes weren't investigated because of this manufactured crisis. Of course, shame and ridicule will play a significant part in her punishment, possibly too much. She probably needs psychological intervention--and a swift swat on the rear to help her get over herself.

Of course, the Madison police were put in a very troubling position due to their failure to properly investigate an alleged rape in 1997. The victim was later proven to have been assaulted, and the perpetrator was convicted due to DNA evidence.

I do hope that she has to pay for the efforts put forth, though. And I can't imagine she'll return to school at UW. I've read that she's been essentially told to go home and get straightened out.

Thrill - I'll be at the band concert in Madison in 2 weeks. I'll let you know if they still use that line. Their tour is generally a dress rehearsal, although we'll see if that one makes the cut!

That picture of her looks very Stephanie McMahon pre-HHH soiling her/ pre-Y2K.

I am disappointed she didn't use the Homer Simpson line when describing her "kidnapper" White male in his late 20s, come on... Learn from Homer when he faked his own carjacking. "Well.. he was.. 'foreign'"

PS Trill- I didn't know your UW band director is Lawrence Welk... He's looking good!

Granted everything I've learned about police procedure I learned from tv in the '80's, but I thought someone had to be missing 48 hours before the police would start a search. Did they change that at some point, or am I just grossly misinformed?
