It really depends on the department. Some PDs use straight up military ranks, with a couple of alterations, usually in this order: Patrolman/Detective (equal ranks, different jobs) Corporal Sergeant Desk Sergeant Lt. Cpt. Major Colonel
Some use a different structure, with different levels in the lower ranks, especially, with Patrolman 1, 2 and 3, or maybe 1st class, second Class and 3rd Class, same for detectives.
Lt and Captain are used for small group and large group leadership, like stationhouses and wards.
above that, they use Deputy Chief and Chief for main leaders, Inpectors for Detective heads (sometimes the Chief Inspector is the head of the detective branch, while a "Colonel" is the head of the Patrol division.
So, to sum up, it's PD based. No overall rank structure like there is in the military. You might see a Chief of police in one town wearing a star like he's a general and in another an eagle like he's a colonel and in another town no military insignia at all.
You now owe me a favor, (cold one). It's kind of scary that I did more research on your place, basically looking at the link provided, before I voted on which sounds like the best bar in the area than what I did for the last primary election in my state....
