OK, quick back story first. When the PS2 first came out me and my sister waited outside Best Buy all night, along with 200 other people to be the first ones to get them the day they came out. And when you buy the first of something it always has the flaws that are fixed on the newer versions. SO quick point, my PS2 went to $h!t even after being sent to Sony numerous times to be fixed. Now with my Tax Return I plan to buy a new one. So my PS2 question is, is it better the have the PS2 stand upright or have it laid down? I have arguments for both and would like to know which is better. And also, what is a good fighting or shoot them up game (not RPG) came to get?

Having spoken with friends over past experiences, along with a guy at a local EB Games (the one in Stafford, if you're interested, actually) that laying it down flat is the better choice, as standing upright will lead to the laser reader in the machine to fall of track and not read properly. I haven't heard any complaints that lying your PS2 down will cause any major complications, and is probably the safest way to go about it.

In terms of good shooters, I recommend any Medal of Honor. XIII is supposed to be good, but I haven't played it yet. The GTA series is a must. For fighting, I gotta go with Capcom vs. SNK 2. Then again, that's good on any platform you can find it. Also, since you're here, on a wrestling board, you need to get Smackdown! HCTP. Un-friggin-believable.

Can't wait till June, when the Warriors comes out.

OK I got a question. What does it mean when your PS2 is taking a long time to load? I did have it standing up for a long time and just laid it down a week ago. I think my warranty is past due.

I got mine right when it came out and I've always laid it down with no problems except of the occassional "Disc Read Error" that always goes away when I reset.

It probably just means that it's a PS2. Load times for the system are TERRIBLE, especially on some games that have come out recently (Mafia, MVP Baseball). I know that if a game comes out for PS2 and another system, I don't buy the PS2 version, because I like short load times.

I've had my PS2 since opening day, and for the first few weeks I had it, it was upright. That lead to numerous problems with games not loading, freezing, etc. I rarely get those problems now, with it flat. I guess maybe damage could be done with it upright for a long time, but I'm not aware of Sony releasing a statement or anything like that.

I recently had to buy a new PS2. I had one of the original series as well.

It started with trouble reading PS1 games and slow loading. Then it started having trouble reading just about any game or DVD. Then it wouldn't read anything.

All in the matter of about a 3 month time span it went from being perfectly fine to not working at all.

I bought a PS2 about a year after it came out. I always laid it flat, and I have never had a problem, except for Crazy Taxi. I don't know why, but the PS2 will cough and wheeze and eventually give me a warning that the game is not working properly. Meanwhile I can still play the game just fine even after the warning comes across the bottom of the screen.

But besides that, laying it flat is the way to go. Oh, and get Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004. I recently discovered the game, and it is just awesome. I suppose that 2005 will come out pretty soon so you can wait, but I love the 2004 game anyways.

2004 came out in October I believe, so 2005 probably won't be out until that timeframe this year. Tiger Woods 2004 is too good of a game to wait 6+ months for. Get it now, and trade it in for 2005 when it comes out!

Also, my PS2 has been upright sicne I got it over a year ago. Never had even one problem with it. After reading all of this talk about laying it flat, however, I think I might do that just in case. I can't have my precioussss breaking on me...

Indeed. My only beef with the game is that it is too easy. I finished all of the World Tour events, and that was NOT easy, but when I put my guy into PGA Tour Season mode he started killing everyone. I consider a round in the mid-60s to be below average, as my scoring average is 62.2 and many of my rounds are like the one I played last night at Royal Birkdale, where I hit every green in regulation and shot a 58. I've yet to find a game where when you are really good you shoot like the pros, I mean, even Tiger at his best didn't win EVERY tournament.

As an aside to the PS2 issue, how much time du you spend playing it? I probably average about an hour a day, although occassionally (like 2 or 3 times a month, max) I get some time to play for a few hours at once. I wonder if there is a limit to how much mileage the PS2 will give you in terms of gameplay.

Yeah, I had that happen with Tiger 2004 also. The World Tour got fairly tough at times, but eventually I battled my way through it. Then on the Season, I destroyed EVERYBODY. So I stopped playing Season when I had all the $$$ I wanted, and now I really only play multi-player with it. There are an infinite number of drinking/smoking games to go with golf video games!

As far as playing PS2, when I do play it is almost always for at least 2 hours. But I only do that mayyyybe once a week, and often I don't play for 2-3 weeks at a time. However, exceptions to that rule come when I buy an RPG and will play it endlessly until I beat it. Doesn't happen too often though, since good console RPGs are harder and harder to come by.

Tech TV did a fix for the disc-read error thingy a while back. it has something to do with a gear in the system getting out of sync, causing the laser to be too far away from the disc...or something. Apparently, it was only a glitch with the first shipments.

Tiger is the bomb-diggity, and this coming from someone who doesn't really enjoy sports titles very much.

Soul Calibur 2 rocks the body.

THUG proves that Neversoft can do anything. 5 games in an awesome, but simple series and each one is better than the last.

...here's the thing though, pretty much every cross console title is better on X-box, and I can't really think of a good, PS2 exclusive, title released in the past few months (other than some choice RPG's).

My PS2 is 3 years old, no problems yet, always played it flat.

Smackdown, nuff said. WWE games on GameCube and X-box dont even come close to PS2's Smackdown. SD: Here Comes the Pain is one of the 4 or 5 games that I can actually play by myself and not get bored in a matter of minutes.

That's where "past few months" comes in :).
