I'm Renegade Raine and I approve this message:

I only have a PS2, and I JUST bought a GameCube last week (they're cheap now!). But I'd have to say the PS2 is the best just because there's a whole lot more games (including PSOne games), and that's what really matters on a game system...right?

As for recommendations, I'm not sure what you like, but here's my favorites...

PS2

Smackdown: Here Comes The Pain
Final Fantasy X
Kingdom Hearts
The Sims: Living Large
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

As for the GameCube, I only have Animal Crossing right now, but damn...that game is addicting. Before that game, I usually didn't get up until about two in the afternoon, but now I actually wake up early JUST to make sure I sell all of my stuff and to get the bugs or fish that are around in the morning. The game I plan on getting next though is the new Harvest Moon title (can't remember the name).

It depends what you are buying it for.

PS2: The oldest of the three. Therefore, it has the weakest graphics, but also the largest game library. It also tends to get the largest selection of different games and different types of games. It will play DVDs without any external equipment. Currently, the bundle with ATV Offroad Fury 2 and the online adapter runs $150.

Xbox: Probably has the most impressive specifications (whether that translates over to the games, I don't know). This one is targeted at a more mature gamer. It seems like the titles are 65% rated M games (mostly FPSs), 30% sports, and 5% everything else. It will play DVDs with an additional DVD remote. The Xbox Live adapter is also separate. The system currently runs $150.

Gamecube: Forgive my Nintendo bias. This is the least expensive system, currently $100. It will not play DVDs, as the game disks are smaller. Many games that are available for PS2 and Xbox (GTA) are not on Gamecube. However, most of the games are suitable for everybody, and many of my favorite games (Zelda, Metroid, etc.) are only on Gamecube. Also, there exists an adapter for the Gamecube so that you can play Game Boy games through your Gamecube. There are a few games that even offer interconnectivity between the Gamecube and the Game Boy. Online-ready games are virtually non-existent.

I'd go for a PS2, personally. I like to see my money buy quality electronics that serve more than one purpose; and the PS2 offers DVD playback, backwards compatibility with PSone games, and it also plays audio CDs, too. Can't go wrong with that. That's quite a bundle for the cost, I think.

As per the Gamecube: I can't take the system seriously, looking at the controller. Being pretty hardcore into fighting games, I can't see how a game like Mortal Kombat or the Street Fighter series would fare on it.

ANd for the X-Box...well, I don't know if I want more Microsoft in my house. It's bad enough I use THEIR operating system, THEIR internet browser, and THEIR office software...let alone even purchase THEIR video game system. I'm not paranoid, but isn't Microsoft considered to be evil? :-)

It's not like you HAVE to use their Web Browser...

When is that Acclaim/Midway arcade collection gonna' come to the PS2 anyway? I rememeber hearing about it a couple of months ago, but haven't heard anything since then.

Also, I have the PS2 currently, but the Gamecube is more appealing to me due to (a) its price, and (b) the first party games. Halo and Halo 2 isn't going to change that for me.

Also, EA's MVP 2004 pwnz all other baseball titles released for this season. I'm not sure if it matters for which system, if you have PS2 and are interested in playing me, PM me, we can get a time set up.

I go with Gamecube as my favorite system, because the first party Nintendo games are so great. But my days as a drooling N fanboy are lessened by playing Halo on the X-Box.

Games to buy-

Gamecube: Metroid Prime, Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Mario Kart: Double Dash, Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Mario Party 5

X-Box: Halo, Ninja Gaiden, Halo, Halo 2, Halo

PS2: GTA: Vice City, Smackdown: HCTP, Castlevania, Kingdom Hearts, Tiger Woods 2004

Joe Wilson (looking at Interocitor manual)- Hey, here's something my wife could use in the house...
Crow T. Robot- A man?
Joe Wilson- An interocitor incorporating an electron sorter.
Cal Meechum- Oh, she'd probably gain 20 pounds while it did all the work for her.
Tom Servo- Cal, you bitch!

Well, speaking of getting your money's worth:

I don't know anybody who has had their Gamecube break yet. Can't be said for either the X-Box or the PS2.

My thoughts:

1) If you like games by Nintendo AT ALL, then you should purchase a Cube. No other system is ever going to have those games. And if you really need a DVD player, go out and buy a real one. Unless you go out and purposefully purchase the crappiest brand out there, I garuntee you it'll last longer than your PS2 and most likely the X-Box as well.

2) Don't forget that X-Box has the GTA: Double Pack. If you're willing to wait for a year after the latest GTA game gets released, you can just go ahead and pick it up for X-Box.

3) The only reasons I would buy a PS2: Frequency, Devil May Cry, Virtua Fighter 4, Final Fantasy. If you can't live without those, then maybe you should pick it up. Otherwise it seems a waste of money to me, compared to the big N and the big X.

-Jag

And it's not like Sony is any less pervasive that Microsoft in your house. A lot of your electronics and a lot of your entertainment stuff (movies, music, etc) are most likely brought to you by Sony.

Never been a big fan of Nintendo (though Metroid Prime does look quite snazzy) so I don't know much about the GC but I do own the X-Box and PS2.

I'm all about the sports so my favourite games are probably a bit squiffy by most folks tastes, but for what its worth:

X-Box: Halo, Championship Manager, Ninja Gaiden, Madden '04 and the GTA's. Granted Madden and GTA are multi-format but being able to rip your own music on them makes such a difference.

PS-2: Pro Evolution Soccer 3, Smackdown HCTP, FFX, and Devil May Cry are the only games I own and still care for.

I prefer the X-Box personally and probably use that more, but a lot of my mates only own the PS2 so for multiplayer goodness it has obvious advantages. That and the fact that if you're a wrestling fan the PS2 has a game in that area that doesn't utterly blow goats.

Reliability-wise I've had no problems with either, though I do know a couple of folks whose PS2 went doo-lally after a couple of years or so. And for what its worth the new silver PS2 is far sexier and quieter than the X-Box.

As a stand alone machine I'd plump for the X-Box given my love for sporty games, FPS's and the like. Depending on your tastes, whether you own a PC, and what your friends own, your mileage may vary.

For gamers, it's really awesome that we have three viable systems, with each having somewhat of a niche.

That said, I'm a lifelong Nintendo fan who grew up playing Metroid, Zelda, Kid Icarus, then Double Dragon, Contra, Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy and of course all of the Mario franchise. Nintendo to me has always had a reputation for quality; even if the graphics were a little clunky, you were always assured that you'd get your money's worth.

But in recent years, it really seems like the rest of the gaming industry has passed Nintendo up. Especially with their failure to create a presence in the online market. That is the wave of the future, even if some people now balk at paying a monthly fee. I own a PS2 and a GameCube and I have used the playstation FAR more over the last two years. Admittedly, this is mainly due to games like Final Fantasy XI and Everquest Online Adventures, both MMORPGs. But factor those out and with stuff like Grand Theft Auto, Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain, Dynasty Warriors 4, I would still be using the Playstation more.

Not to say that there haven't been some great Cube games. Mario Sunshine was a lot of fun, Metroid Prime was an amazing game that got me playing a first-person shooter for the first time (since Duke Nukem and Doom II). But after beating both of those, there wasn't much left to do with them. Zelda Windwaker was a dissapointment, and I sold it back. Once the cartoony gimmick was done, I couldn't stay interested. Mario Kart: Double Dash is a fantastic update to the series, but I haven't played that in months. An online version would have helped freshen it up. Ditto for Animal Crossing. There is no reason why that game shouldn't be online.

Never played X-box, but I'm not a big Halo person and as I understand it, that's one of their big selling points.

Depends on what you want...if you want a cheap system that has the same franchises everyone's been playing since 1986, get a GC. If you want the system with the most bells & whistles, get an XBox. If you want the same thing everyone else has, get a PS2.

I own an XBox, although the other two systems are in the house as well, they're just not mine. I would make the same choice again if I had to go back...almost all the really popular PS2 games outside of some of the platformers are on the XBox now, while XBox retains a few of it's top games exclusively outside of the PC (Halo, KOTOR). The Gamecube is my second choice, although it would be nice if Nintendo was willing to show more than a spark or two of creativity during a system's lifespan. That controller...yikes. Hope you don't plan on playing any fighting games with it. The good price makes up for most of the drawbacks.

If you are into RPGs at ALL, then go with the PS2. X-Box has virtually none besides Fable and that is it's biggest weakness to me (although I'm an avid RPG fan). Aside from that, it seems like X-Box's whole gaming library is based around one game - Halo, and if you want to play a good game other than Halo on the X-Box that isn't available on amy other system you're pretty much out of luck. Bottom line, except for a few notable games, it seems that if it's on X-Box, it's either a FPS or a sports game, two genres I couldn't care less about.

PS2 on the other hand, has tons of RPGs like Final Fantasy X and X-2, Final Fantasy XI, Everquest, Kingdom Hearts (2 coming soon), Summoner 1 and 2, Suikoden 3 (and 4 coming), and every single awesome PS1 RPG game to boot.
Plus it has fighters like Soul Calibur 2, Dead or Alive 2 (although X-Box has the newer ones), Virtua Fighter 4, Tekken 4, Bloody Roar 3 and 4, Mortal Kombat, Capcom franchise games, and the great King of Fighter games from SNK, plus all the PS1 games.
It also has debatably the best wrestling game out right now in Smackdown: HCTP, favorites like GTA, Devil May Cry, the Metal Gear series, and the newest Resident Evil game, cool games like Dynasty Warriors, Kessen, and Castlevania, plus tons of sports games too.

Gamecube is great too because of the low pricetag and franchises like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and a new Final Fantasy game. Windwaker might have disappointed some but the newest Zelda game coming out looks absolutely gorgeous.

So I'd say go for the PS2 for all those games plus all the uses (subpar as some might allegedly may be), and in the future if you have some extra cash get the Gamecube.

Myself, I don't have a Cube, as the hordes of Nintendo Fanboys have turned me off from it, but I have a PS2, and used to have an X-Box, and have found about 5 great games for each. (I will not buy a system until there are at least 5 games that I want for it.) I'll try to name 5 games (personal favorites) that might not typically get the nod.

PS2 : Dynasty Warriors 4, Disgaea, Ace Combat 04, Devil May Cry, Rez

X-Box : Jet Set Radio Future, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Crimson Sea, Shenmue II, Hunter : The Reckoning.

Is KOTOR an RPG? I guess a free-roaming actioner like Zelda, right? Sorry, when I was thinking I was thinking more along the lines of the older menu-based and the MMORPGs as well. Both Morrowind and Balder's Gate are MMORPGs too, right? Well, that's a few more RPGs on X-Box, but there is still a dearth of traditional style RPGs on the system when compared to the PS2, especially with the backwards compatibility with all those games that came out in the "year of RPGs" back in '98. FF Tactics Advance for Gameboy is an awesome game, but the best installments in the series have definitely come out for PS2 and only PS2 (especially all those collections of the Nintendo era games that came out). Plus Tactics Advance is a totally different type of game from every other installment save for the original Tactics, so to say "if you like FF, get a Gameboy" is to miss out on the core series.

Bah, there are plenty of RPGs.

Pick up the GBA adaptor and you have a million of them for Gamecube. (Golden Sun 1 & 2 in particular are really good.)

Without using those, no one has mentioed PSO 1 & 2 or PSO 3. Skies of Arcadia came out for the Cube as well.

If I were picking up a system right now, I'd look at the Platinum, Players Choice, and Greatest Hits collections.

Xbox Platinum has Munch's Odyssey which is one of the best platformers that I've played. Project Gotham racing is also Platinum. I believe that Morrowind is at this point as well. Any of those three are great games for under $20. I've seen the platinum games as low as $9.88 at Wal*Mart recently.

PS2 has a large number of "Greatest Hits" games, including Kingdom Hearts, Jak and Daxter, Crash Bandicoot

Overall, I'd say that the Gamecube for $79 used along with a GBA player for around $50 will be your best bet for the money. This opens up all Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and GBA Advanced games, along with a pretty deep line-up from Nintendo. This is definitely the system to pick up if your budget is a constraint, because you've got over 10 years of Gameboy games you can find used - sometimes between $5 and $10 bucks. You can't go wrong with the old carts as long as the save game batteries still work - but we're still using our old Capcom Zelda games and old Pokemon games and some of them are ancient.

I would not buy a used Xbox due to potential HD wear and tear, and used PS2 are usually not the plan. The GC seems to be the most durable of the three from what I've seen - your milage may vary.

A few other things in favor of each system:

PS2-

Like has already been mentioned, a huge library plus most of the PS1 games are backward compatible.

The Eyetoy. This thing is ridiculous fun.

Gcube-

If you like Big N games, great cuz that's pretty much all you are getting. RE4 is the only big 3rd party game launching anytime soon.

The GBA/Gamecube connectivity is pretty damn fun, especially on LoZ: 4 Swords and FF: Crystal Chronicles.

Xbox-

This is where I spend most of my gaming time, even though I love me some RPG's.

No memory card needed, unless you're transferring games between systems or you want to burn your entire CD collection onto the thing.

A slew of system exclusives on the way: Doom 3, Halo 2, Fable, Jade Empire, KoTOR 2 are going to join the ranks of Chronicles of Riddick and Full Spectrum Warrior as must play titles.

Much better versions of cross platform titles. You may say graphics don't matter, but check out Splinter Cell or Max Payne 2 on side by side screens with an Xbox and a PS2, the difference is staggering.

It's basically a computer, which means it supports additional memory and with a little research, you can find other uses for all that memory (Like for instance, playing 50 seasons of Madden with every album you own on the Box) This will void your warranty though.

As an owner of all three systems I can honestly say each has it's own strengths...

Gamecube: Great because of the Nintendo Games such as Zelda, Metroid and Mario. And others Super Monkey Ball.

Mario Party 5
Super Monkey Ball 2
Pikmin (1 or 2 when released)
Zelda: Wind Waker
Metroid: Prime

Xbox: Fantastic Graphics, good games. Halo a must, Knights of the Old Republic, also tends to get the better side of the cross platform games with stand out features being the music ripping.

Halo
KotOR
Ninja Gaiden
Red Dead Revolver
Full Spectrum Warrior

PS2: Good for all genre's. Suffers a little when graphics are compared, but it's all about the game play right? Massive games library (Good or Bad?) And I prefer the controllers, they are a extension of the hand.

GTA (Whichever one, SAN ANDREAS...)
WWE HCTP
Pro Evolution Soccer 3 / Winning Eleven 7
Final Fantasy X
Onimusha 3: Demon Siege

I have three words for people who say you don't need PS2 to play great RPGs: Final. Fantasy. Seven.

The backwards-compatibility is what makes PS2 far and away the best system. Until it gets any sort of online play, Nintendo will struggle to remain #2. Online Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, or Mario Party? Sign me up for that yesterday.

If you can afford one, buy a PS2.
If you can afford two, buy a PS2 and a GameCube.
If you can afford three, buy a PS2, a GameCube and two games for each.
