Five days left.

Most of the races have been decided, but there's a heckuva lot at stake in the National League, not to mention the position jockeying from the teams already in. The breakdown:

American League:

AL East:
Yankees: Being 4 up in the loss column with 5 to play, we can pretty much lock the Yankees into the top spot here. They'll use Baltimore as a nice little vacation and gear everyone up for Minnesota, barring a huge Red Sox collapse.

BoSox: Magic number firmly at 2 after that amazing comeback at Fenway and 3 games against the Devil Rays to come. Are they a lock? Well, this IS Boston... eh. They're in.

AL Central:
Twins: Pack your bags for the Bronx, boys. The Yanks pitching staff has been absolutely filthy against Minnesota and they're gonna need a lot of luck to split the 2 games in New York. Then it's return to the Metrodome and pray you can ride the crowd and your finish to a series win.

Tigers: At 49 games out with 5 to play, you'd think these guys were out of it. But, um... moving on.

AL West:

A's: Locked up the division last night, making the three games against the M's starting Thursday much more anti-climactic than most of baseball would've hoped. Maybe they'll lie down and help Seattle's slim chances at the WC.

Mariners: Speaking of which, they've looked horribly weak of late and had a chance against a struggling Angels team to close the gap in the division. They didn't do it. Dead in the water as of Friday. Mark it.

National League:

NL East:

Atlanta: Yawn. I guess they can play for home field, or something.

Florida: Amazing performance against Philly last night drops the WC magic number to 4. Sweep Philly and they've got a lock with losses by both the Astros and Dodgers. I think they split the next 2 games and clinch on Saturday with a win over the Mets.

Philadephia: After Wednesday, these next two games become must-must-wins. But then you've got to take the Braves home to Veteran Stadium for three and likely sweep them to take the wild card. Possible, but unlikely.

NL Central:

Chicago: I SWEAR I AM NOT BIASED. I PROMISE. YES SIR. With that out of the way, the Cubs find themselves on top of the Central for the first time in like eleventy billion years or something. Magic number at 5, I'd imagine Baker will start some combination of Clement/Estes/Cruz during the final 2 in Cincy and go with Prior/Zambrano/Wood for the final 3 at home, which all but guarantees 2 wins and a near lock for the third with Zambrano having only one bad outing in the last 2 months. It's not a stretch to say they'll win the next 5 and not have to worry about the Astros, but wishful thinking, as always (NO SIR NO BIAS HERE.)

Houston: Did anyone see a collapse like this coming? 4 losses in a row drop them out of first, Billy Wagner getting rocked, normally steady Wade Miller getting chased in the 2nd inning... wow. They should bounce back with a win over the Mini-Giants Wednesday afternoon and then they've got 4 at home against the Brewers. Soft schedule vs. soft schedule for the last 4 and it'll come down to which team wants to play the spoiler more.

St. Louis: Ok, they're TECHNICALLY not out of it. But down 3.5 games with 4 to play, it's looking bleak. Win out and hope the Cubs and Astros somehow lose their next 10 and you're in! Whoo!

NL West:

San Fransisco: They seem willing to concede first to the Braves, but winning these 2 in Houston might make them play the last few tough to see if they can sneak that home field in... who knows.

Los Angeles: See St. Louis, but add in the extra problem of having to play 6 games. 3.5 back in the wild card and fading pretty fast. Maybe they should just let Gagne pitch every inning from this point on.

For the races that matter, my predictions:

AL WILD CARD: BoSox clinch it Thursday with a win and the M's loss to Oakland.

NL CENTRAL: Cubs enter Sunday up a game on the Astros, have the bullpen collapse on yet another good Wood performance and lose, only to scoreboard watch and see Houston lose in much the same manner. Cubs clinch on the last day, perhaps in a playoff.

NL WILD CARD: As above, Marlins end up taking 2 of 3 against Philly and clinch Saturday after a Phils loss.

A few problems:

Due to tie-breakers, the Yankees already clinched the divisiion with the win on Tuesday.
Mariners have an off-day on Thursday, thus Boston would either need to win their next 2 against Baltimore or win 1 and have Anaheim beat Seattle on Wed. night for Boston to clinch on Thursday.
IF the Cubs become dependant upon the Astros bullpen to collapse on Sunday, there will be a one game playoff on Monday.

Don't think of them as gifts, think of them as bartering. In exchange for helping the Red Sox win these games, the Orioles get a higher draft position. Besides, they owe the Red Sox after losing 1 and tying 1 game against the Yankees because of guys falling rounding 3rd base.

It'll work itself out.

After 29 innings in Game 7 the Umpires call it a year. "Tie game - nobody wins!"

As fun as Angels over the Yankees was last year, it would be 1000% better to see the small-market, nearly-contracted Twins beat the shit out of New York. And then Ken Huckaby runs onto the field and drives his knee into Jeter's shoulder again....oh sorry, drifted into fantasy again.

Fuck all that noise....Cubbies are in the Playoffs, I really think we can pull off a WS trip.

Taken from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:

Accusations have surfaced about Julian Tavarez doctoring the baseball with a foreign substance that he hides on the bill of his cap.

''It's ridiculous,'' Tavarez said. ''They checked my hat last year, too, and never found anything. They're just trying to get inside my head. But I won't let them.'' Just to demonstrate that no one was getting inside his head, Tavarez decided to ramble on for another hour or two and provide a quote of the year possibility. ''Some people like skinny women. I like fat women. Some people like young women. I like older women. Some people like poor women. I like rich women,'' Tavarez said. ''Some people like clean hats. I like my dirty hat.''
