Let's be fair. The NHL doesn't put on ANY games.

Originally I was going say that baseball was a much-needed diversion for Rivera but this tragedy isn't about Mariano Rivera but his wife and her family. He should only return only when it's best for them.

Back to playoff thoughts:

After forcing a Game Five, the Braves went out in rather embarassing fashion today, on their own field.

Well, I got 3/4 series winners right. My pick of the Dodgers was an embarassment, given the way that turned out.

Upcoming: Sox in 6, Cards in 5. The Astros will be the least rested team going into the LCS, having just used both Clemens and Oswalt on short rest.

Horrible tragedy aside, and it is that, a potential Rivera absence would be a very serious blow to the Yankees, who can usually rely on 3-4 combined innings from Gordon and Rivera. And Gordon has a freak eye injury to boot, but it doesn't seem serious.

Edit: Added bonus. Scanning the World Series Prediction Thread. Most of us got at least half of them right, or 3/4. Notable were Nag and Freeway420, who correctly called the winners, if not the # of games, for all four division series.

W statesmen Pieman and odessasteps turned in an embarassing 1/4.

Hey, I did that, too! I was just off by one game on each of the series, which seemed kind of weird.

With that being said, even though I loathe the Yankees, best wishes to Rivera in this situation. May he have a speedy emotional recovery.

Same picks for me. The fun of picking the major upset is that if you're right, boy are you smart, but if you're wrong, well, you knew it was a longshot. I kind of dislike Gagne saying the Cardinals are going to win the World Series.

I'll stick with Astros v. Sox for the Series since that was my preseason pick and it's amazingly still alive, but I don't know that I see the Astros winning after using Clemens and Oswalt in games four and five either. That could put them in a 2-0 hole really fast and they aren't coming back from that. They absolutely have to at least split the first two games. Gooo Backe.

No, it's not that they want a black man to hold the record. As you point out, that's already the case. Rather, they seem to have more sympathy for Barry Bonds than the white fans do. It's not necessarily racially motivated.
