I wasn't really old enough to watch the NWA in the 80's. I have seen some tapes and remember Pez as "enhancement talent". Either way, still a shame about his passing.

| #2 Posted on 18.1.05 2233.29 | Instant Rating: 9.00 | I was just getting into wrestling when Pez had his run. I HATED Pistol Pez... but the day he turned on Jimmy Valiant absolutely out of nowhere and took his beard during a Worldwide interview I became a total Shaska Whatley fanatic.
RIP to the instigator of one of my first mark-out moments.

Watley lost, and I remember during several Omni taping matches he'd be wearing something to cover his scalp only for Valiant to run-in and take it off, causing Watley to run in terror.

I've only seen snatches of his in-ring work, but he appearing on a documentary over here called Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends, where the host investigated the American obsession with wrestling. He went to the Power Plant and got bullied big-time by Sarge, but then supported and helped by Pistol Pez. He came across as such a nice guy, really down to Earth and friendly. It's sad to see one of the biz's better members go.

He turned on Jimmy Valiant (and by extention, superjobber Rocky King, for whom he was a sorta mentor I think) to hook up with Paul Jones and his army of freaks. Then he just sorta vanished, popping up on indy shows. Then I read something about a benefit show for him ayear or two ago because he needed a heart transplant. So I guess that's why he died. Too bad.

I remember visiting relatives in central Illinois and seeing wrestling from the St.Louis TV stations. Growing up seeing only AWA and WWF, this was really great for me and my brother--new wrestlers. And here was Pez Whatley involved in a loser has to wear a mop on his head match. I can still hear the studio audience chanting, "MOP-HEAD...MOP-HEAD...MOP-HEAD!"
