I promised a huge write-up, but what I deliver is weak.

There is a gallery of photos at www.thezims.com/gallery/ hat you can check out. I'll try to write up a little bit more about the park later. I have tickets to the second official game this coming Saturday, and they are better seats than we had for this game.

First of all, let me say that there are bad seats at the new park. I know what you are thinking, they are supposed to all be great... well, they aren't.

We sat in section 225 for the first preseason game on April 3rd. I bought these tickets within minutes of them going on sale, so I thought I had pretty good seats. We were in row 1, seats 12 and 13 of section 225.

Now, here's the thing. I'm a tall guy - 6'5" - so I don't expect to be completely comfortable in all areas in life. I've given up on japanese automobiles, for example. I had expected a little bit better from this ballpark though.

One of the things they said all along was that all seats would face the field. Well, this is true, but probably not in the way that you would expect. Maybe we got the one section in the park that was like this, but our seats were angled, but lined up in a row that would have faced away from the field. The resulting jagged seating pattern would work in theory, but it didn't work too well in practice.

You can kind of tell how this worked from this picture; http://thezims.com/gallery/album13/100_2595 Ideally, you are facing home plate at about a 20 degree tilt from perpendicular. In practice, this had my right leg butting up against the cup holder to my right, and more space open on the left side. The problem with this setup was illustrated when the large man to my wife's left ended up spreading his legs wide of the cup holder and taking up all of the space to her left. This forced her to sit crooked in her seat, and looking back across the field. Not so good.

Second of all, we had a wall blocking a prety good portion of the field. I'm pretty tall, so I could see over it, but my wife couldn't see over it unless she leaned forward - cue the fat guy to the left again and we have another problem.

Here's the crazy right field corner - I'm not sure how this will be a good thing. I realize it brings "character" but I foresee "injuries". http://thezims.com/gallery/album13/100_2605

Fans are exceptionally close to the action in the good seats, as can be seen here. This isn't from spring training, this is from Petco. { EDIT: This typo probably isn't the link he wanted you to click - CRZ }

Prices were OK for the concessions: http://thezims.com/gallery/album13/100_2565

Here's the best shot I got of the mini wall in right. http://thezims.com/ gallery/album13/100_2575? full=1 As you can see, it is only there to make it easier to see the game from a walkway. That's got to go... the wall needs to be raised up. Those people have good enough seats that they can wait until they get to them before seeing the game.

All in all, I love the park, and I had a perma-grin the entire night. I still give it an A - just not the A+++ Ebay feedback blowjob that everyone else is giving it.

I can't wait until Saturday. I'm going down Thursday without tickets, just to see if I can get in anyway.

The pictures look great, and Petco really looks fantastic. Thanks for posting them, and I look forward to the review. As if there weren't enough reasons to go to San Diego already...

Man, not to piss on the parade, but that looks like an awfull park. Looks like a newer minor league park, that has a third deck. Nothing visually appealing about it to me. Maybe it will look better on TV, or if I ever get to go there in person, but from the photos, the only positive I see is the fans seem closer to the game.

Petco looks really small. What's the seating capacity there? It's a very nice looking stadium, though. Not Camden Yards or anything, but still very nice.

I heard players are complaining about that wall already and I don't blame them. That needs to be fixed.

That is to bad about the seats. How they are angled can kill your enjoyment of the game.

My two questions are:

What is up with the building by the foul pole on the third base side? Is there a purpose?

Why all the hard angles in the outfield? It looks like someone went nuts with the protractor.

I've been dying to ask: since it's Petco Park, does that mean I can bring my mutt and that they have little plastic bag dispensers everywhere? Do all the water fountains have dishes on the floor below them? And really, it's not that stupid of a question... the Colorado Springs Sky Sox ocassionally have "Bark in the Park", where you can bring your dog and run around the grassy GA areas.

42000 is the advertised seating capacity.

http://sandiego.padres.mlb.com/ NASApp/mlb/sd/ballpark/ sdballpark_index.jsp

NOt bad ticket prices, from what I can see on the website, still, not the most attractive park. But, the seating grid looks better than the actual photos!

Well, I'm not a professional photographer and it's a cheap digital camera.

The place looks much nicer than I captured - it's just not as nice as everyone is going to tell you it is.

I'll try to get more of the promenade / supporting area stuff. Also, I can tell from the shots I put up that I missed important areas of the park.

I'm sticking with my A rating. Don't be so quick to dismiss it based upon my initial reaction.

Yeah, as soon as you have a Major League team to play there, you'll have something for sure.

And now it's time for my version of this report... I got around to it eventually.

First off, we took the trolley down instead of driving, so we didn't have to deal with the HORRIFIC parking problems at Petco. It's 17 dollars to park in the three lots within a block, and then all the rest of the lots are further and further away. The best plan is probably parking at Qualcomm and then taking the trolley in, which is about what we did, only we parked at home. They'd added extra trolleys, but even so it was pretty crowded there and back. So since I have a transit pass, our total cost for transportation $5 for Guru's day pass. With the day pass we also had the option of going to Gaslamp for dinner beforehand, or even putzing around downtown all afternoon.

Petco has been built in a rather shady part of town by all accounts, so there's not a lot directly right next to it. However, because the ballpark now IS there, the whole area is likely to be bought out by developers and we'll see a lot more condos, hotels, and multi-level parking. Fact is, it just isn't there yet.

I love Petco a million times more than the Q. It was built with foot traffic patterns in mind. I don't feel like I'm likely to be trampled or touched all the time walking around. That was a real problem at Qualcomm where walkways were about 10 people across and had vending carts and concessions lines through them. The walkways at Petco must be almost three times as wide, so there's no risk of lines cutting off the way through.

The field seats are AMAZING. I foresee us dishing out some serious cash a couple times this season to partake in their goodness.

http://thezims.com/gallery/album13/100_2550
this is taken about 10-12 rows back. You're truly sitting at field level, and the players are so close. I mean you could probably read pants size (etc...) from some of these seats.

I had a really good time, and the food isn't half bad. Though the grilled tuna sandwich wasn't anything to write home about.

http://thezims.com/gallery/album13/100_2595
This is where we sat (note that somehow I ended up carrying everything) The seats in this section were REALLY narrow. I'm a very small person and I felt pretty cramped. There wasn't any aisleway in front of the seats either, so if anyone wanted to get out every single person in the row had to get up to let them out.

http://thezims.com/ gallery/album13/100_2600? full=1
Now I'm not sure if you can see it very well, but to the right of that big green thing are the picnic bench seats. These are the cheapest seats other than standing room. They are nice scooped green benches with grass in front of them. At the very front of this section is a sand volleyball court. Supposedly there will be a net up and people can play before the game. I foresee that this will NEVER happen. First of all, it is an awesome place to get signatures during warm ups, you just toss your ball or cap over the fence to the players and they sign them and toss them back. And secondly, the children have claimed it as a sandbox. The entire game there were between 5 and 15 children there at all times. There's a small cement patch just below the stairs and since it had sand on the cement the older kids were running down the stairs and then sliding across the cement. Later they started a long jump competition, and finally they started taking turns burying each other in the sand.

My favorite part about Petco so far is that there are faaar more concessions, and they are equally distributed around the park. Directly behind our seats was a Friar Franks, and something or other Grill. So all food other than BBQ, fish tacos, and ice cream was directly behind us along with both a woman's and men's restroom (blessed jesus mother of mary!) and a compadres club kiosk. The food items not available directly behind us WERE available just down the ramp. The days of running half way around Qualcomm for a damn pretzel are over. I also didn't wait more than two people in front of me for anything. I gather the concessions on the lower levels still had some long lines, but I don't think they can compare to how bad the lines for everything at Qualcomm were.

I had a really good time, there was baseball, I ended my no beer at baseball thing, and it was just cool.

I think Guru was just grumpy when he typed up this report. He had a really good time and grinned the entire night.

BLASPHEMER! That's the chalet slide of the one and only Bernie Brewer. He makes the trip down the slide after every Milwaukee home run. Hell, back in the County Stadium days, the slide ended in a mug o'beer (filled with balloons). These days, he just lands on a platform...sigh.

The sausages race along the 3rd base line...ducking bat blows from Randall Simon. Why isn't he in jail!? :-)

Bernie's the man...so what in the blue-and-orange hell would possess a Mets fan to come up with this!?
