The decision to "fire" Paul Heyman from the Smackdown General Manager position was made right away once Vince McMahon decided to hold the draft lottery. The reasoning then was to open up a regular spot for Kurt Angle where he would not have to wrestle.

WWE is also hoping that using Heyman as a major heel manager will not only add some strength to Smackdown's weak heels, it will add more to the Eddie Guerrero programs. WWE wants Heyman to be a modern day version of Capt. Lou Albano and Freddie Blassie. WWE also wants Heyman to get involved in programs with John Cena so that Cena can get more over as a face.

    Credit: Wrestling Observer Newsletter

This would just be a great, GREAT move for Smackdown. Have the Dangerous Alliance return. Have a Bobby Heenan like stable of wrestlers who challenge for all titles. Let Paul Heyman bring that extra bit of heeldom that only he can bring to a feud. If Heyman gets the right group of guys together this could be a big turning point for Smackdown.

I know continuity is a bitch, but wasn't Heyman fired from Smackdown 1 week ago? I know it can be explained very easily how Heyman ends up on SD...although if Heyman goes back to SD, the draft lottery becomes even more of a joke.

Heyman got drafted, and quit RAW. He wasn't fired. That doesn't preclude him being a private manager for the talent on SD, like Teddy Long.

But also remember after the WWE beat the WCW/ECW group at Survivor Series, the next night on RAW, Heyman was "fired" and "thrown out" of WWE by McMahon. Only to return months later by the side of former WWE Champion Brock Lesner. So it wouldn't be his first time.

Weren't there internet smarks saying ECW was coming back as a "rebel" 3rd brand after Wrestlemania?

WWE recently purchased the name, gimmicks, and video library of ECW. Actually WWE does have a ECW rise & fall DVD in works for this spring.

So they dumped Heyman from SD! to bring in Angle as GM since they were unsure of his neck situation. (Which as of now is he does NOT need surgery, but will be kept off active roster and only partaking in special matches or something to that effect)

Maybe this is the start of something to bringing back the ECW brand, or simply to bring Heyman back as a manager.

They have lots of underused talent, so why not try an ECW brand and see if takes off. Dump Velocity since no one watches it and use that time slot. We shall see

But remember, this time last year they were saying the same thing, only WCW was the rumored company to come back. I would not be shocked if ECW did come back or even WCW. But I won't be waiting for it.

Ignoring the fact that "ECW" wouldn't fare much better, ratings-wise.

It may not get better ratings in the Velocity timeslot, but it would be a better way to help talent develop. Having a distinct show with its own storylines and meaningful matches gives wrestlers a better chance to work on their promos, in-ring psychology, and overall story telling abilities much better than throwaway, pointless matches on a show half full of recaps.

But then again, WWE has OVW for that, dont they

Apparently just as a manager.

Why dump Velocity and not Confidential? No one watches that either. You could switch the timeslots. But this is all hoohaha because I don't think adding a third b-show makes much sense anyway.

Anheuser-Busch decided they'd try and fight the microbrews by rolling out this product called Anheuser World Select, putting it at the same price point as your Sierra Nevadas and Abitas and whatnot. They're the No. 1 beer manufacturer on Earth, but they want to own the niche markets too. No idea how well it's doing.

Point being, if they're trotting out a new ECW as a way to draw the money from ROH/AJPW/whatever fans, it's not such a bad idea. At the very least, it's more than just a third b-show. I don't think anyone's clamoring for like Sandman-New Jack or nothing, but ROH with more money and polish beats Velocity or Heat, neither of which add to the fanbase (I'm assuming a new ECW might draw fringe fans who fell away from or never gave a shit about WWE-style wrestling like the puroresu/lucha/obscure indy snobs).

But how different would an "ECW" be compared to the regular product? Anyone tuning in to see something drastically different than what makes up Raw or SD is going to be disappointed. It'll still be WWE guys, but no major names. Some new people may tune in out of curiosity, but if they aren't WWE fans to begin with, chances are they won't stick around for too long.

If they wanted, they could turn Velocity or Heat into that kind of show, but I think it's proven that they really don't care about running storylines (or any of significance) outside of the 2 main shows, as evidenced by the current lack of them, and Steph reportedly shutting down the "Stevie Night Heat"/Commissioner Stevie storyline not too far out of the gate.

Longer matches, or gimmick matches that you don't see on the main shows (a version of the Ultimate X match?) More blood, but not to extreme (as it were). Definitely taping seperately from the Raw or SD tours -- develop a home-base site, work locally but broadcast nationally.

They don't have to reinvent the wheel or go 100 percent MMA or anything, but enough tweaks to what they've got now could potentially make them a little more money and perhaps develop some new players (or more likely, finally find a niche for guys who've been mired in the mud for years).

It could also be used to bring back the hardcore title. Since Raw (Womens) and Smackdown (Cruiserweight) already have their "own" titles.

Not if it's on at 10/11p on Saturdays it isn't.

If they did it, then hopefully, yes. I was thinking how absolutely stupid it would be if it was just taped before Raw or something. About the only appeal ECW maintains (to me anyway) today is the buildings they ran, and the authenticity of such a venture would rely on where their shows were held. It's hard to imagine a Vince-owned product hitting up the Hammerstein Ballroom, but hey, who knows.

They're big deal now is conditioning the fans to the "new WWE style". What makes you think they'll turn around and let guys then do hardcore stuff, insane spotfests, and gimmick matches for the hell of it?

People need to realize that ECW, like WCW, is *dead*. Any attempt to "resurrect" either is just going to fail.

Rather than start up a 3rd brand (running 2 is almost hard enough for them right now), if they really wanted to give lesser used guys a shot, is make Velocity primarily Cruisers and tag teams, as well as build up guys for the US Title scene. Work storylines, get guys exposure, and cycle guys on & off as they see fit. Same with Heat - tag teams and IC Title scene guys. Cut back on recaps. That accomplishes the same thing without trying to run a 3rd brand, stretching themselves too thin.

By b-show I meant a show full of people where they're there only because they can't get on Raw or SD with any consistency. I would assume an ECW-ish show wouldn't directly feed into another show.

Right. They have to run the barns; if you do it before or worse still, after a show, few will care. Might as well be a dark match show at that point.

If Bischoff and Angle fire a few guys, some of their friends quit in sympathy, and then they start this pirate wrestling* group, it MIGHT develop enough buzz to get people watching. Or it'll fall fat on its face and everyone goes back to Velocity or Heat or TNA.

(*--pirate wrestling being an unauthorized group, not a bunch of swashbucklers duking it out. Though THAT has merit on its own.)

Don't forget that much of what was popular about ECW was the "fuck WWF, fuck WCW, fuck Vince, fuck Bischoff" mentality. Being an ECW fan was at least in part the loyalty that comes for cheering for the underdog. A WWE-owned ECW, no matter if it is "owned" by Paul Heyman, no matter how many ECW alums it brings together, wouldn't be a fraction of what it once was. It'd still be filled mostly with B-level WWE talent that people aren't watching overnight on Saturdays now anyway.

As for Heyman, it's easy enough to bring him back, they just need to make sure they explain how he could quit and then show up again. A simple 2-minute speech about how he's a private businessman free to enter into whatever contracts he pleases and he's chosen to represent Wrestlers X, Y, Z sticks with the storyline just fine.
