Now with Kane - there truly is a big difference between the Big Red Machine and Glenn Jacobs.
I doubt Kurt Angle goes around in real life telling everyone that he's better than them and waving his Gold Medals in their face (or stuffing them down other people's crotches). At best he might yell "Whooo!" once in a while. Matter of fact, everything I've seen him in outside of wrestling says that he's one of the nicest guys on the planet, a complete opposite of him character on tv. Kane wearing a mask doesn't make a huge difference, since all the other differences between him and Jacobs can be explained with different personalities (which Jacobs plays perfectly).
Hell, Mr. Perfect and Curt Hennig were white amateur wrestlers, but that doesn't mean that they're the same either.
Wrestling exists in the eternal present. What is, has always been, and when it no longer is, it never was. It has no past and no future, and sometimes even today is in question. - Madame Manga

That's odd, because in that UT retrospective magazine WWE put out just like 2 months ago, PB was all gushy about how great he is. I realize that WWE wouldn't have printed it if it was derogatory, but it's still strange. I guess, like most people in wrestling who speak out, he's a hypocrite. What a shocking surprise. Cough.
As far as the value of Kane the character vs. Glen Jacobs the wrestler....I agree that the character presentation was a hefty chunk of why it continued to last, but I certainly don't think they could have just thrown any big guy in the Kane outfit and had it work. Jacobs did a good job, it's too bad that there's a good chance that, after this Monday, that character may be damaged or changed beyond repair depending on what they decide to do with him now.
I kind of hope they just stick the mask back on him. They took it off, ok, fine, the stipulation was fulfilled. There's no reason to leave it off. Give him a mask that doesn't look stupid, a better outfit, and get rid of his damn alternative-sounding theme and give him his original one back or, better yet, the one that Type O Negative recorded for him that was never used. Don't have him talk unless something major is going to happen (IE, when he talked before the 1st blood match with Austin at KOTR), and have him win a few important matches and (gasp! the horror!) look dominant in doing so.
Naturally, they won't do any of that. But I can close my eyes, plug my ears, and pretend.
I think it's probably because the "home" crowd will react the most to it. If you look at old-school regional stuff, when a home-town boy turned on the fans it got more heat than if he was someplace else. The same will apply here.
