New England has reached an agreement with the Cincinatti Bengals to aquire running back Corey Dillon. In return the Bengals will recieve New England's second round pick in the draft believed to be number 56 overall.

Dillon has over 8000 rushing yards in his 7 NFL seasons. Take a good look at his career stats here: http://sports.espn.go.com/ nfl/players/profile?statsId=3914

The Patriots won't win next year, and this move guarantees it. Their whole team persona is no stars, no egos (aside from Brady, who's at least a homegrown guy). Adding Dillon to the mix is going to change all that.

I'd agree with all that (plus the Patriots won't win because they won last year and no one repeats anymore) but when Bill Belichick has shown no hestitation when sending guys out the door that didn't fit his program, wouldn't it be fair to say that he's 100% satisfied that Dillon won't bring that negative stuff to the table?

If Belichick says #28 is OK, that's good enough for me.

Dillon will take MAJOR heat off of Brady this year. This is a great pick-up especially when the Pats hit the icy December period.

Edit: Most important they now have a guy to grind the clock when leading late in games.

Thank the stars he's gone. Pats fans, I have nothing against you, so I'll just politely thank the Pats' management for taking that cancer off the Bengals' hands. I think you'll find he's more trouble than he's worth.

If I were a betting man, and I could find a way to legally make a proposition bet, I would bet that Rudi Johnson has more all purpose yards next season than Dillon.

I would also make that bet. I would also, however, bet that Corey Dillon has more all-purpose yards than Kevin Faulk did last year, by a wide margin. Corey doesn't have to be the best running back in the NFL. He just has to be good. Corey Dillon is much more than good.

This should be a great move. He is a very good back. However, as others have said, it's the attitude. If Belichick can keep him under control, the Pats may be the best team in the league.

Bellichek has gotten others under control, but I don't see Corey Dillon being one of those guys.

In that division, they are still a playoff team, but not a mortal lock.

Wait a minute...the Pats have kinda used a pass-first offense, with backs catching passes outta the backfield a'la Edgar Bennett '95. Are they gonna ditch that successful offense to feed Dillon the ball 20-25 carries per game?

It almost seems like a quantum shift in philosophy...should the Pats really fix what not only ain't broken, but wins championships?

Hopefully we of Cheesehead Nation will find out for ourselves...at a Pack/Pats Super Bowl.

The Pats only have used the "pass-first" offense in lieu of having a functional running attack, not because it's their preferred way of doing things. Antoqain Smith was great in 2001 but he'd fallen off terribly the last two years, and the Pats only had a good running game when everything came together. Now, with Dillon, I'd suspect that they have a back who can actually make something happen, instead of a pedestrian back who only can get what might be there.

EDIT: Yards per carry (2003): Antowain Smith 3.5, Kevin Faulk 3.6
Corey Dillon's CAREER average is 4.3. Go PATS!

Good pickup for the Pats. Dillon's personality will be kept in check by the strong locker room. Even if he is slightly below his career average the ability to grind it out in second half will make the Patriots a better team.

Maybe we're talking about different guys...

The Dillon I remember wanted to be traded, talked bad about management, and had recurring groin injury related problems last season.

Which guy were you guys watching?

It will be interesting to see how they do without a cold weather back, if that's how it plays out. Smith was better in the snow / cold.

I actually thought the Pats had a decent committee going with Smith and Faulk (if Faulk could have stayed healthy last season).

Dillon - eh. To be fair though, I was way off last year when I thought that E. Smith on the Cardinals would get more yards than Dillon (I made this statement in about week 10 when both guys were out).

Speaking of which... (new thread time)

He'd been bitter about being a Bengal a long time, and he was bitter about losing time to Rudi Johnson. To give him the benefit of the doubt (which I must since he's now a PATRIOT and was a HUSKY before that) it's not unheard of for someone to be unhappy at a job for a long time, then new management comes in and turns things around for the employees but some of them can't get past their unhappiness. It's called "needing a fresh start."

Also, given Belichick's penchant for cutting guys loose he doesn't like, isn't it reasonable to assume he made a favorable character judgment about Dillon before the trade?

Plus before last year he only missed TWO games in six years.

C'mon Guru! He was playing in Cincinnati, not Aruba. Smith's from Texas and Faulk's from Louisiana, hardly "frozen tundras".

Yards per carry (2003): Antowain Smith 3.5 (which was greatly helped by his last two games in whcih he gained nearly 200 yards. His average per carry in the first 14 games: 3.0), Kevin Faulk 3.6
Corey Dillon's CAREER average is 4.3.

PLUS, Smith's actually 2 1/2 years OLDER than Dillon.

I'm kind of happy from both sides. I'm a Bengals for lifer, so I'm glad to see a guy that doesn't want to be in the program gone to make room for some talent looking to help build on the great job Marvin's been doing. Marvin knows what he wants the team to be and they produced for him last year.

As a sort of "I live here, and the Pats have grown on me" sort of New England fan, Dillon and Faulk are going to be fun to watch. Also if Dillon makes waves in the organization, he's not going to last long. Belichick won't put up with it.

This is kind of how I looked at Takeo Spikes' trade last year. Let him go and get some hungry guys. Both teams as well as the players themselves end up happy.
