| #1 Posted on 17.9.02 0606.09 | This is a sad day in basketball. Today, Patrick Ewing is expected to announce his retirement in New York. He's probably going to work in the Wizards' front office.

Hakeem is not far behind.
And yes, this day and that day will be sad days for the NBA, losing two of it's best big men ever.

Shortly after announcing his retirement from pro basketball, famed center Patrick Ewing revealed that he has accepted an assistant coaching position with the Washington Wizards.

| #4 Posted on 18.9.02 0359.02 | Instant Rating: 4.52 | *pops the cork off a bottle of champagne* Whoohooooooo! Ewing's gone! Finito! Bye-bye! See ya later! Tell me I'm not the only one happy about this. Actually, tell you the truth... perhaps I used a bit of hyperbole in celebrating. Because truth be told, Ewing's been pretty much irrelevant for about four years now. The guy should've known his time was up when the Knicks managed to get to the NBA Finals without having him around for most of the season, back in 1999. You'd think that losing their “franchise player” would have affected the Knicks more than it did. But in truth, they played better without him. And another thing... I don't see him as being one of the best centers of all-time. Hakeem, Shaq, Wilt, Mikan, Russell-- yes. Ewing? Hell, no. He was a good center, a dependable center, but he wasn't a guy capable of lighting it up for 50 points on any one night, or grabbing 20 rebounds. The first four guys I mentioned were/are capable of the former, and pretty much all of them were capable of doing the latter. Ewing? You could most of the time count on him to put up 10-20 points every game, but he wasn't good enough to have an outstanding individual performance against any good team. Perhaps that's part of the reason why Shaq, Hakeem and Rik Smits were able to light him up on a regular basis. [puts on a catcher's outfit, and gets ready to catch any flaming balls sent by the Knicks fans...] “Now put that thing back where it came from or so help me-- Oh, hey! You were right about Ewing being irrelevant the last few years, though.

| #10 Posted on 20.9.02 0107.53 | Well, if he didn't have the Abdullah the Butcher/Perro Aguayo look going on, he wouldn't be an unattractive man. Ewing and Bird, on the other hand, didn't fall out of the Ugly Tree - they had it fall on them.

| #12 Posted on 20.9.02 0118.20 | Well, that's *you* - I read a review of AKIRA where the Giant Baby Tetsuo was compared, in looks, to a scrotum, but it didn't hinder my appreciation of the film. I don't see why having a nutsac skull should hurt Battier; all he needs to do is let his hair grow, and no one would be the wiser.

Well, then YOU tell him to stop shaving his head. I mean, I'm sure he knows what his head looks like, and someone's probably told him it's a good idea to let it grow out and all...

| #14 Posted on 20.9.02 0813.02 | Instant Rating: 4.52 | Well... I'm glad I'm not the only person who thinks Ewing has to be one of the ugliest men alive. One of the lowest points of SportsCenter for me was when Ewing opened his ugly mouth and started screaming after a monster dunk. “Now put that thing back where it came from or so help me-- Oh, hey!
