ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) -- The Oakland Raiders signed Jeff George to a contract Monday, bringing back a player who hasn't thrown an NFL pass in five seasons.
George, the No. 1 overall pick by Indianapolis in 1990, joined the team in time for Monday's afternoon practice. He previously played for the Raiders in 1997-98, starting 23 games and throwing 33 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
Ye Gods. Apparently Jay Schroeder's number was missing from their Rolodex.

Between George and Brooks playing for the Raiders, the Raiders defensive backs should get plenty of opportunities to catch the ball in practice. | JayJayDean

Well, Rob Johnson's out there (as of tomorrow), but whoever signs him is up against stiff competition:

I am annoyed that people seem to be forgetting he was actually in the league 2 years ago, doing a stellar job sitting on the bench for the Bears late in 2004.

He was riding the concourse train in the Atlanta airport many, many, many years ago (while starting for the Falcons), and only myself and one other guy in there seemed to know who he was.

It's nothing if the Dolphins don't trot out Mark Duper.

Mark Clayton practically needed a walker to get to his spot at the Hall of Fame induction and Marino STILL looked Duper off in favor of Clayton. :-P

From the article: Jeff is like the hottest girlfriend you ever had.
All previous entrants to the contrary, this may be the most embarassing thing Jason Whitlock has ever written.

Those four paragraphs were the single most brilliant thing I've read all summer.
Despite that though, I have to disagree with his conclusion. All Jeff George really ever had going for him was a shotgun for a right arm. The gun's the first thing to go as you get older, while such things as ignoring plays from your coach and then bragging about it to the press about it tends to stay.
