Very good column. BTW: I thought your column from last year’s top 80 (Mr. Perfect) was one of the best columns of the year. And I mean the best out of all the columns in all the websites everywhere.

I had the same thoughts myself. I had a post in the weinerville message boards. I called it “PPV matches on Free TV – Good or Bad?” I can’t see reasons to pay $35 when the better matches are on free tv. I really can’t see them going through with doubling the PPVs to 24 per year either. Benoit vs RVD went 10 minutes. The ladder match with Jeff Hardy featured all the high spots you can have short of Jeff breaking his neck. The only thing left to save for the PPV is the Heavyweight Title Change. Or if you wanted a big angle you could have the Raw roster vs. Smackdown roster in matches for the PPV. This would make the PPV special again.

Thanks a million!
On the Mr. Perfect column...it has some errors and they are immortalized in print. I'm ashamed of this, but I was really inspired when I wrote the thing. I'm a genuine Hennig mark.
"Best out of all the columns in all the websites everywhere..." wowsers. That's the nicest thing anyone's said to me in many moons.

The article is a good read. Thanks. But I must disagree.

Although we are getting these great PPV quality matches on free t.v, we are in fact still getting PPV quality matches on PPV. Still all the big names are facing each other in what we all hope to be the "Big Pay-Off".

Take away these matches from free T.V and all we will hear the same old thing...

"That show sucked"

"Why is RVD wrestling Albert"?

"Why is The Rock facing Crash when he could be taking on RVD"

"RVD sucks" (opps..my opinion)

So I guess we have to be able to draw the fine line. As Smarks we want the build up...the pay off. The Casual fans, wanna see the big stars take on other big stars.

In other words, you cannot please everyone.

Very good work Parts Unknown, the points you made are exactly why Brock vs. Rock has ruled so far. They haven't even TOUCHED each other. I'm really hoping they have the patience to keep this up until Summerslam. If they first time they so much as hit each other is when the bell rings for the main event it's going to make it seem much more special.

That's what I said in the article. I don't have any answers...I don't want to go back to the jobber squash and I don't exactly like the direction they are going.
I'm just presenting a quandary. I can't see any positive results for the WWE.
I was hoping someone would write a rebuttal column and present why the current trend is good...if anyone believes that.
Thank you all for your kind words, once again.

rebuttal column.... hmmm

It's been said that giving away the "PPV-caliber" matches on free TV is bad for us, the wrestling fans in general and bad for the business as well.

I don't agree. Especially now. Probably never.

Squash matches are all fine and good. No one enjoyed a good Ted Dibiase Vs. Iron Mike Sharpe match more than yours truely. I'm just not sure it made me care if Ted could actually beat Savage or whoever he was fueding with at the time. Matches on TV are all about feuds and advancements.

Some of us long for the old days when there were 4 PPVs (I actually remember none - you had to go to a house show to see the blowoff!) and the TV was syndicated and taped. With 52 (or more) syndicated TV shows to produce and distribute, promoters in those days rarely gave away a good match. Roddy Piper would beat the hell out of Barry Horowitz or Steve Lombardi (in some incarnation) several times before going against Hogan or Savage or even Snuka in the House shows or on the newly minted PPVs.

But Superstars or USA wrestling (or NWA Saturday Night) were low production, low cost, low rate time slots with low costs per minute. Nobody did much in the way of ratings for those shows. They were there solely to promote the house shows, and later, the PPVs.

And I think that's how Raw started. Vince thought it would be another Superstars. But Raw, and Nitro and even Thunder were about ratings and share and advertising. We all remeber when, a couple years back, the the PTC urged advertisers to pull ads from Raw. That cost them. They had to sell their numbers and sell hard. But they sold numbers and demos. Raw works on the numbers, as does Smackdown.

So I think VKM and the others who help him run the business, know that Raw has to get the numbers to make the money so they can get the PPV buys. Today, there are 12 PPV buys a year (now). How do they get me to buy a Vengance PPV. It isn't Summerslam or the Rumble or WM. I gotta care about someone. I have to have that one match . Maybe it's a blowoff of a feud. Maybe it's a gimmick. Maybe it's guys who have never met before.

But before I am EVER going to consider buying a PPV, I have to already be watching Raw and/or Smackdown.

To do that today, VKM has to give us Rock/Flair or something like it. Casual fans DON'T mark out for Eddie and Benoit. They might, if they happen to see it. But everybody knows the Rock. Everybody knows Hogan. Many know Trips and UT. Casual fans turn in for these matches on Raw or Smackdown and might, I say might buy a PPV with a gimmick match between the two or their hero against some dasterdly villian.

But they gotta watch Raw or Smackdown First.

As a main eventer once said, "That's the bottom line."

I would not mind seeing the return of the jobber in some form. Like that Mark Henry vs. Brock match. Mark Henry SHOULD be a jobber, but they do not treat his as such. With the exception of Velocity matches, that man should always face vastly superior heavyweights (Angle, Brock, Rock, Eddie, Benoit) and get annihilated every time. Seriously, I am so very tired of seeing 2 wrestlers who are set to wrestle at a PPV go at it in a tag team/three way dance the four shows before a PPV. when there were jobbers, you HAD to get the PPV to see the big stars square off. That is what they were for! Sure you would have a run-in here and there, but the FIRST meeting in the ring between the two would ALWAYS be at a PPV.
That is why I am really liking the Brock/Rock build up. To my knowledge, they have not been in the same match ONCE since the Summerslam Main Event was set. And I hope it stays that way! I have NO idea how a Rock/Brock 20 minute match would pan out, and I am eager to see it....

I think maybe the "jobber squash" has merely been replaced by a non-finish match between the actual PPV participants. Whether it's by DQ or whatever, everyone still knows that a TV match will not resolve anything and the PPV match (usually) will. I think that's why great TV matches are no big deal, as far as the future of all-the-whole-whateva-you-call-it.

I find it highly unlikely that, after putting Brock over Hogan, Rock, and Taker, they'll job him to Big Show.
