Well, this would be about the 3rd or 4th time he's retired from coaching. So who knows what the future will hold when the next big payday arrives.

Rusty Shackleford is just the name he uses to order Pizza with.

Given Parcells' track record, the topic should say PARCELLS "RETIRES"!!!!

I'm not surprised really. He goes 3 or 4 years, and that's about it. He's the Larry Brown of the NFL.

Except he lasts about 2 or 3 more years than Larry Brown does.

I know I shouldn't be, but I'm surprised by this. I guess I thought it would make more sense to toss TO than to ditch Parcells, if it really was a him-or-me scenario with those two.

I think it was Bill Simmons who made an interesting point last week about how the best coaches are all under 55, because good coaching is so intensive and such a drain you need to be young(er) so you have the stamina for the late night tape-watching and game-planning sessions. I can see how this might be affecting Parcells at this stage in his life. I do look forward to another team with a more promising outlook luring him out of retirement again in a few years, though.

So far, I've been kinda surprised by the reaction here in Cowboy Country, it seems to be one of more indifference than disappointment or even elation. If anything, they're pissed that he waited so long, and cost the Cowboys a shot at some of the top names available.

The level of media attention this has gotten today on ESPN has been ridiculous though. Ok, he retired, no need to shut the entire network down.

Really interesting to see Jones' follow up hire. Will he stay with the big name, or return to his not wanting to pay the big bucks philosophy?

Sean Payton stated today that he staying right here in N.O. So Jerry Jones can scratch his name of his list. Though I do question the timing.

He is still under the last year of his deal with Pittsburgh. He basically quit, wasn't fired. Steelers would have a right to get compensation.

Bill Parcells is old. The job has become too demanding. Games he was involved in always had a bigger feel to them, but the man just looked run down and beat this year.

I can only imagine that if Cowher wanted to coach next season, he would have remained in Pittsburgh. I don't see him as a viable coaching candidate until next year at the earliest, and even then probably not until the year after.

There were rumours about Gruden being available to a club that could offer up a package similar to the cash-and-picks combo that T-Bay gave to Oakland for him. I could see Jones wanting to pick up an established, Super Bowl-winning name....or, he could just finally get it out of his system and be the coach himself.

I don't know what is more disquieting -- the fact that the rest of the statue is missing, or that it has four toes.

Cowboys 0-16. Nah, I don't think Jones coaches himself.

While this is a plum job, it also has a ton of hazards for a young coach.

1. Following a legend. Although he did not win a playoff game, parcells still carried a lot of weight with most players on the team and had their respect and he kept them in line.

2. A intrusive owner. With Parcells goen, there is a chance that Jones goes back to his meddling ways and becomes more involved in the football player decisions.

3. Owens. HE basically said today getting rid of Parcells was a good mvoe for the team to move forward and looks forward to the next coach taking the Cowboys to the next level. If Parcells was ever unsure of his decision, this qoute re-affirmed to him that he was right to leave. To is cancer, plain an simple. He ruins team chemistry and has no problem throwing coaches and players under the bus to make him look good. He has Jones on his side too. So no matter how many passes he drops or meetings his misses or all the drama that is TO, it will fall on the coach to make it work or HE will be canned, not Owens.

If I was a young coach , I would NEVER take this job and if I was an established coach, I owuld not want the headaches. The only options for Jones is to retread a mediocre head coach who no one else will give shot (Wade Philips) or hit the colleges and pray you can pry SOMEONE with the lure of the Cowboys mistique. My money is on phillips for a year and then the hard court press for Cowher.

Reading this made me think that Jones should force TO to coach the team for a year. THAT would be entertaining!
