I'm surprised, but Thome won't get those *off* days at DH to rest his ailing back like he would have if he was with an AL team. It will be interesting to see how well he can hold up playing a postion for a full season.
I think he can hold up just fine. Sure, his production might dip some and he won't get as many AB's, but even if his numbers are half what they were last year, he's still far better than most NL first basemen. Sean Casey, I am looking in your direction.

Hey, if you don't like Casey that much, we'll be happy to trade...

I don't think this is going to help Philly all that much. David Bell is a good player, but he isn't the final piece of the puzzle. Thome has hit in the AL his whole career, and now he has to get used to new pitchers, new parks, etc.
Now if the Phillies get Glavine....
I was born in a manger, like that other guy. You know, he wore a hat?
Glavine, however, is going to be 37 next season. While he had a pretty good year this past season, I'm not sure if he can handle 3 more years, let alone the fourth he's asking for. Turner Field is a pitcher's park, hands down; the Vet really is neither a pitcher's nor a hitter's park (and I know nothing of the new stadium).
I'm not sure how well Thome will do this year, but give him a year to get adjusted and things will begin to pay off, I think. It's not like he's the only bat in the lineup.

I am sure Philly fans will be absolutely thrilled if Thome's production from last year is nearly cut in half and he is making $14-$15 million. He should be better than ALL of the NL first basemen. Are there any really good hitting NL 1B'men besides Bagwell?
You are talking about fans that boo Santa Claus and kids that strike out in the Phillies father/son games.

My point was that Philly fans would be quite displeased if Thome put up shitty numbers. The only other thing I inferred was that many Philly fans look long and hard for reasons to boo. No sour grapes here, since they will probably get this Matsui guy sooner or later. I like a nice blockbuster signing or trade just as much as the next Yankee fan, but we need Jim Thome, David Bell, or Tom Glavine as much as we need Mondesi, White, and Hitchcock.

Yeah, I hear ya. Philly fans aren't quite as bad as people think, but they have their moments. I'm just tooting my own horn as a fan for once. It's not like we get much to cheer about winning titles every other... um, ever. Trust me, this is the most exciting the Phils have been in 10 years and I gotta get my joy in while things look good. Speaking of, I'm going to need think of a clever title for my upcoming thread on them signing Glavine.

How bout Nevin / Klesko (depending on who they put there next year)?
//edit: Well, shit, not Nevin's last year. Look at Nevin 2001 when he was at third and assume he can put up a year like that. It's not as rediculous as looking at his 12 HR last season...
(edited by Guru Zim on 5.12.02 1722) Your analogy is similar to:

Yes, but Maddux was the injured one last year. I really don't think age will hurt his stuff as much as it would for a power pitcher, plus there are plenty of examples *cough Randy Johnson* that show that is not certain.
Besides, the Braves always seemed complacent and Philly is a more vocal area, both good and bad. Well, it looks like the Mets got him anyway.

Hey, the Phillies can always sign Clemens!
Oh wait, I almost forgot that he is too much of a pussy to play in the National League. My bad.
Why should he risk getting beaned by some idiot trying to make a name for himself or "defending" somebody crowding the plate wearing everything but chainmail? I wasn't aware Mike Piazza was that well-loved anyway...
Besides, Pedro is far ahead of dishing out HBPs the last few years. And I don't remember anyone claiming Nolan Ryan was a pussy for hitting people, maybe because pitching inside was fine back then and they were scared shitless by an old man...
As far as overpaid pitchers, I guess the Dodgers could free up Brownie!

Pedro and Ryan both have/had pitched in the NL during their careers.

I see where you're coming from with the Sox fans bitching about the team, but I haven't seen much of that this year, barring the bullpen controversy. I've never taken that view myself.
